Kael sat beside Bella, his hand never leaving hers. The room around them felt like a distant memory, the shadows stretching long into the corners of the room, fading away as all his focus honed in on her. Her breath was shallow, her body frail, but her eyes still held a flicker of life, a spark that made Kael’s heart ache with love and fear.
He wasn’t about to give up on her. Not now. Not when they had come so far. The dreams they had shared—the future they had once talked about—flashed in his mind like a beacon of hope. They were supposed to have it all: the family, the pack, a life filled with love and joy. And he wasn’t about to let that slip away.
“You’re stronger than this, Bella,” Kael said softly, his voice full of conviction. “You’ve always been. We’ve fought so many battles together, and we’ve come through each one. This is no different.”
Bella’s lips parted in a faint attempt to speak, but the effort drained her. Her voice, when it came, was barely a whisper, frail and weak. “I’m… so tired, Kael. I don’t know how much longer I can keep going.”
Kael cupped her face gently, his thumb brushing over her cheek as he gazed into her tired eyes. “You’re not alone in this. I’m here. I always will be. We’re in this together. Our bond, Bella, it’s stronger than anything. Stronger than this… than anything this world can throw at us. You’ve given me everything, and now I’m giving you everything I have.”
Bella’s breath hitched as her gaze locked onto his. She tried to smile, but it was weak, the effort almost more than she could handle. “I wish… I wish I could be as strong as you, Kael.”
“You are,” Kael insisted, his voice firm but tender. “You’re stronger than you know.”
Despite her pain, Bella felt a flicker of warmth at his words. He was always like this—steady, unwavering. He had become her anchor, the one thing in her life that was constant and unshakable. She wanted to believe him. She needed to. But her body was betraying her. The energy from the baby, the instability of her hybrid nature—it was too much, too fast.
Misery paced frantically at the foot of the bed, her face tight with worry. She was no longer offering quiet advice or calm reassurances. The usual unshakable composure she carried had slipped, replaced by desperation. Every failed attempt to stabilize Bella had drained her of hope. She was running out of ideas. Running out of time.
“I’ve tried everything, Kael!” Misery snapped, her voice breaking with the weight of her frustration. “Nothing works. Her energy’s too erratic, and the baby’s growth… it’s accelerating faster than we can contain it. I don’t know how much longer we have before this… before it’s too late.”
Kael’s eyes flicked to Misery, the panic rising in his chest, but he didn’t let it show. He couldn’t. Not in front of Bella. He took a deep breath, his hand still gripping hers tightly. “We can’t give up, Misery. Not while there’s still a chance. I won’t lose her. I won’t lose our child.”
Misery’s expression softened, but the pain in her eyes was unmistakable. “Kael… sometimes, even love isn’t enough. We need something more.”
Kael shook his head, refusing to accept that. “No. You don’t understand. This isn’t just about me or Bella. It’s about everything we’ve fought for. I can’t lose her. Not when we’ve come this far.”
Bella’s grip on Kael’s hand tightened, and she gave a weak nod, though her expression was one of resignation. “Kael… I’m sorry. I wish… I wish I could be stronger for you.”
“You are stronger than anyone I’ve ever known,” Kael said, his voice low and full of emotion. He leaned down, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. “This—this moment, Bella, it’s just one part of our story. There’s so much more for us to do. I know it. You know it. You’re my everything. We’re going to get through this. Together.”
But even as he said the words, doubt gnawed at him. Could they really make it through? The baby’s rapid growth, the instability of her powers… it felt like an impossible battle. But he wouldn’t surrender. Not when it came to Bella.
He leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead, feeling her warmth and the fragile beat of her heart. Her eyes fluttered closed, and Kael’s heart lurched at the sight. She was fighting so hard to hold on, but he could see it—the exhaustion, the pain, the weight of it all pressing down on her.
And then, just as the air between them grew unbearably thick with tension, a voice cut through the room, cold and cruel.
“I see you’re still clinging to false hope.”
The words rang out in the silence like a dark omen. Kael’s eyes shot up, his heart thudding in his chest. Misery and Lira both froze, their expressions darkening as the door to the room creaked open.
Standing in the doorway, silhouetted by the dim light from the hallway, was a figure Kael had not expected. A figure whose presence instantly filled the room with an overwhelming sense of dread.
Xavier.
His eyes gleamed with an eerie, unsettling calm, his posture confident as he watched the scene unfold before him.
Kael’s blood ran cold. “What are you doing here?” he growled, his protective instincts flaring.
But Xavier’s gaze never wavered. “You’re fighting a losing battle, Kael. The odds are stacked against you. And yet, you persist. How admirable… and foolish.”
