Narrates Paige:
I arrive at the company, and I'm surprised by how beautiful it is. At the reception, after telling them that I came on behalf of their boss, they let me in without any issues, at least until I reach her office. I see the secretary smiling at a quite attractive guy. I approach them and greet them both. Luckily, they both speak Spanish well, so I can communicate with them without any problems.
"Good morning, I come on behalf of Miss Tabatha for a folder and to get up to date with her schedule. I'm her new assistant," I introduce myself with a smile.
"Welcome, a true pleasure. My name is Lucas, and you can come to me if you have any doubts," the guy says, kissing my cheek.
"My name is Paige and thank you for that. You're the secretary, right?" I ask, looking closely at the girl who lost her smile when she saw me arrive.
"Yes, I'm the one in charge of this office," she says, pointing to Tabatha's office.
"That won't be the case anymore. As I mentioned, I am the assistant, and I come on her orders. You will see me here often, and I will be the one in charge of her affairs. If you'll excuse me, I'll go get what I came for and then I'll leave," I say, smiling at Lucas.
I proceed and enter to get what my boss needs. After coming out, I go directly to where the secretary is, looking at me with hatred.
"I need Tabatha's schedule," I say, unintentionally not using her name.
"Do you have such confidence in her that you call her by her name?" she asks with an evil smile.
"You can tell her that I call her that, I have no problem with it. I'm taking this," I say, taking the agenda without giving her time to protest.
"You can tell him I'll go to his house later for some signatures," Lucas tells me.
"Sure, I'll see you then," I reply with a smile.
I leave and walk out of the company with an air of confidence, imagining the secretary's face due to my attitude. Well, she asked for it with her annoying and bitter demeanor, thinking she was in charge.
I arrive home and tell [someone] that I met Lucas and his secretary, who didn't even bother to tell me her name. [They] laugh at my behavior and celebrate that I put her in her place. [They] don't mind me not calling her by her name, as [they] asked me not to from the beginning.
"I told you Lucas would come up with any excuse, and he didn't even know he lives with me. Now he'll come daily, if not more than once a day," [someone] comments, laughing.
"He said he had to sign some things, it's not about me or anything. Don't think too much into it," I say nervously, trying to downplay it.
"Yeah, whatever you say. Just wait and see, when he comes, he'll ask for you and find a way for you to either go to the office or for him to come here. But don't think badly of him, he's a good guy, he's just had bad luck in love. He's always been attracted to girls who played with him, and he ends up alone. That's why I said as soon as he saw you, he would be smitten. And it happened. I can tell you his preferences, and you're his perfect woman. That's why I warned you about Lucas, not to scare you away, but to let you know he'll be around. Now that I think about it, it's not such a bad idea to go out with him, not as boyfriend and girlfriend or anything like that. You could get to know him as a friend, and over time, you'll see if you like him. You can't mourn forever. You have the right to rebuild your life," [someone] says, taking my hand.
"I know, I just feel like it's too soon. I don't feel ready for that, but we can be friends. Like you said, we'll see what happens with time," I respond, sighing.
Tabatha is right. I can't stay single forever because of Mason. Besides, when our marriage ends, it won't take Mason long to be with his new partner and start a family. I just hope he waits a reasonable amount of time, so it's not an immediate marriage after our divorce.
I shouldn't even be thinking about Mason's future life. I have to think about myself and what I plan to do in the future. That's what I should be thinking about.
I hand [someone] the planner, and [they] check what [they] have to do during the next week. [They] inform me of the days I should accompany [them] to certain meetings to take notes, and I jot down the schedules to remember them. That's when the doorbell rings, and it's odd because my friend has security at the entrance of the house to prevent just anyone from coming in, so it must be Lucas or my friends. I get up to open the door and see that it's Lucas. I greet him with a smile.
"Hello, come in," I gesture towards the room where Tabatha is sitting.
"Hello again, thank you," he moves forward, and I follow him into the room.
My friend greets him, and they both sit down, looking at me. I feel intimidated and take a seat in front of them.
"So, you've already met my friend and assistant," Tabatha says, smiling.
"Yes, I had the pleasure, but I only knew she was your assistant, not your friend. I wasn't aware that you were friends. It's good to meet one of your friends; I thought you made them up," Lucas replies, surprising me with the level of familiarity between them.
"How funny you are. Remind me of your sense of humor when I have to make staff cuts," she says, pointing at me.
"As you say, boss," I reply with a smile.
"Don't be like that. You know I'm just teasing you. Now, I came to have you sign these contracts and I brought you what you asked for” the termination letter for your beloved secretary," she comments, and I am astonished. I didn't know about this.
"Are you going to fire her?" I ask, unable to contain myself.
"Yes, I was just waiting for someone I trust to come and be my assistant, and now that's you. I don't need her thinking she's the boss when I'm not around, especially when I can't even remember her name," she says, downplaying it.
