Between Four of Us

Chapter 13

Ch. 13 / 250 Jun 22, 2025

Camille’s heart raced as she stared at the message on her phone, the screen blurring as panic set in. Who was it that wanted to meet her? She glanced up at the brothers, who were locked in a tense standoff, their arguments forgotten as they sensed the shift in the air.

Noah took a step closer, his brow furrowing in concern. “Camille, what’s going on? Who sent that message?”

“It’s… it’s from Matthew,” she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Matthew?” Noah’s expression twisted into confusion and disbelief. “What do you mean? He’s right here.”

“I don’t know!” Camille exclaimed, her frustration bubbling over. “But it says to meet him tonight, alone.”

Matthew’s eyes darkened, and he took a step toward her. “That’s not from me. I swear, I didn’t send it.”

Leo scoffed, disbelief etched across his face. “So, someone else knows you’re here? This is perfect. Just perfect.”

“Guys, focus!” Noah said, raising his voice to break through the rising tension. “This isn’t helping Camille. If someone is playing games, we need to figure out who it is and what they want.”

“Why don’t we start with the obvious?” Leo shot back, his anger palpable. “Maybe it’s one of Matthew’s friends trying to threaten us.”

“That’s not fair!” Camille interjected, feeling a surge of protectiveness for Matthew. “You don’t know that.”

“Maybe I do!” Leo snapped. “Your naive trust in him is going to get us all killed, Camille.”

Camille felt the sting of his words like a slap across the face. “Enough! This isn’t about trust. This is about us figuring out how to get out of this mess together. We can’t turn on each other!”

Silence hung heavy in the air, and all eyes turned to Camille, who was struggling to contain her rising panic. “I’m scared,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I didn’t ask for any of this. I just wanted to know why everything was happening, why I was in the middle of it. But now…”

“Now, we need a plan,” Noah said, stepping forward and taking her hands in his, his warmth grounding her in the chaos. “We’ll figure this out. But we have to stay united.”

Matthew nodded, his expression softening. “I won’t let anything happen to you, Camille. I promise.”

Leo remained silent, his anger simmering just beneath the surface.

“But what if it’s a trap?” Camille asked, glancing between the three brothers. “What if whoever sent that message wants to draw us out? We can’t risk getting separated.”

“We won’t,” Noah assured her. “We stay together. If you need to meet whoever it is, we’ll go with you. We’re not leaving you alone in this.”

“Agreed,” Matthew said, his eyes flickering to Leo, who seemed to be weighing his options.

“Fine,” Leo relented, though his voice was laced with skepticism. “But we need to be careful. If it’s a trap, we’re walking into it blind.”

Camille’s heart sank at the idea, but she nodded, grateful for their willingness to protect her, even if it meant risking themselves. “Okay. We’ll figure this out together.”

As they began discussing a plan, Camille’s thoughts raced. Who had sent the message, and what did they want from her? It felt like everything was spiraling out of control, and she was at the center of it all, trapped between the brothers and whatever dangerous game was unfolding around them.

The night crept in, casting long shadows over the abandoned warehouse. Camille, Noah, Matthew, and Leo made their way to the location specified in the message—a secluded park known for its dense trees and isolated paths. Camille’s heart hammered in her chest as they approached, every instinct screaming that something was off.

“Stay alert,” Noah murmured, scanning the area as they stepped into the park.

Camille felt the weight of their presence beside her, a mixture of comfort and unease. She glanced at Matthew, who walked with a tense grace, and Leo, who stayed just a step behind, his eyes darting suspiciously at every rustle of leaves.

“Why here?” Camille whispered to Noah as they paused near a large oak tree. “It feels too open.”

“Maybe that’s the point,” Noah replied quietly. “They want us to feel vulnerable. It’s a power move.”

Just then, a figure emerged from the shadows, and Camille’s breath caught in her throat. The silhouette was tall and imposing, but as the figure stepped into the light, her heart sank further.

“Matthew,” the figure called out, a sly grin spreading across their face. “I see you brought friends.”

“Carter,” Matthew hissed, his body tense.

“Carter?” Camille echoed, recognition dawning. Carter was Matthew’s childhood friend, someone she’d heard about but had never met. “What are you doing here?”

Carter chuckled, a low, unsettling sound. “Oh, I just thought I’d check in on my favorite trio. Seems you’ve all been making quite a mess of things.”

“What do you want?” Leo demanded, stepping forward, fists clenched. “You’re not welcome here.”

Carter feigned innocence, raising his hands in mock surrender. “I’m just here to help, Leo. I heard some interesting rumors, and I thought maybe I could offer some insight.”

“Insight?” Noah snapped. “You mean more secrets?”

“Exactly! You’re starting to catch on,” Carter said, his grin widening. “But I’m afraid there’s been a misunderstanding.”

“What do you mean?” Camille asked, her anxiety rising.

Carter’s expression turned serious. “Your little situation? It’s not what you think. It goes much deeper than you know.”

“What are you talking about?” Matthew stepped forward, his tone fierce.

Carter’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “Let’s just say the stakes are higher than any of you imagined. Your father has a plan, Matthew, and Camille is at the center of it. You need to decide quickly who you can trust—because time is running out.”

Camille felt her heart drop as the implications of his words settled in. “What do you mean, at the center of it?”

Before Carter could answer, the sound of footsteps echoed from behind, and Camille’s stomach dropped once again as another figure emerged from the shadows.

“Did someone say ‘trust issues’?”

Camille’s blood ran cold as she recognized the voice. It was the brothers’ father, his presence looming dark and menacing as he stepped into the light, his intentions clear in his piercing gaze.

“Enough games, boys. It’s time to settle this once and for all.”
