“What does he want from you?” Matthew finally broke the silence, his voice low and filled with a mix of frustration and something Camille couldn't quite place. It was hard to focus on anything when he was standing so close, his intense steel-blue eyes searching hers. Camille barely knew him; how could she feel so many things for a guy she met just this morning?
“I said, what does he want from you?” he repeated, his irritation more pronounced this time.
“Why do you care?” Camille raised her eyebrows defiantly, meeting his stare. Matthew shook his head, his jaw clenching.
“Drop it, it doesn’t matter,” he muttered. With surprising force, he pushed her against the wall. It was both scary and exhilarating, her heart racing as her breath caught in her throat.
Matthew moved closer, his breath hot against her ear. “He might look cool, but he won’t give you what you need...what you want.” There was a dangerous edge to his voice, a seductive promise. Camille had a feeling she’d heard these exact words before.
“Why do you think so?” she whispered, her voice trembling, part defiance, part anticipation.
“Because I can see you,” Matthew murmured, his lips just brushing the edge of her ear. “You want an adventure. You want a fight, a fire. That guy has no blood in his veins. He can't give you what you need.”
His hands roamed over her body, igniting the fire he spoke of. She could feel the intensity of his desire, the adventure of being so close while everyone else was in the other room. They were hidden in the darkness of the corridor, but the danger of discovery only heightened the thrill.
She barely cared about Noah or Leo anymore; her thoughts were consumed by the heady sensation of Matthew’s arms getting closer to her most intimate zones. She knew it was reckless but she couldn't bring herself to care.
Suddenly, they heard footsteps approaching. Matthew jumped away, quickly darting into a nearby room and leaving Camille alone just as Noah emerged from the living room, his face a mix of surprise and concern.
“Camille, are you okay?” Noah asked, his eyes scanning her face.
“Huh? Yes, I’m fine,” Camille stammered, trying to steady her breathing.
“What were you doing out here?” Noah’s concern deepened, sensing her unease.
“I just needed some air,” Camille lied, forcing a smile. Noah seemed to accept the explanation but didn't look entirely convinced. He led her back to the dinner table, where the conversations were still flowing, oblivious to the charged moment that had just passed in the hallway.
Camille took her seat between Leo and Noah, Matthew was still away so she had to focus on the conversation. Her mind was reeling from the intense encounter, but she tried to join the conversation smoothly, making small talk and responding politely to questions.
“So, Camille,” Mrs. Parker smiled warmly, trying to engage her, “Any thoughts on what you might like to do after school?”
Camille, her mind still half-occupied with Matthew’s whispered words, answered, “I’m interested in studying international relations. Maybe something that involves travel.”
“That sounds fascinating!” Mrs. Parker nodded approvingly. Leo and Noah exchanged a look, clearly plotting something.
“Maybe you could tell us more over dessert?” Leo suggested, his playful smirk returning.
Camille nodded, grateful for the distraction. As dessert was served, she noticed that Matthew skipped the dessert and didn’t seem to be coming back any time soon. She was left to wonder if the tension was palpable to both of them or if he was only playing with her.
Throughout the rest of the meal, Camille felt like she was walking a tightrope. Noah would look at her with his caring eyes and Leo would give her playful touches, but all the questions were tearing her apart.
By the time they reached coffee and final pleasantries, Camille was emotionally exhausted. Mrs. Parker escorted them to the door, thanking them for coming.
“Thank you so much for having us,” Julia gushed. “It was wonderful to meet everyone.”
As they walked back home, Camille replayed the evening's events in her mind. The stolen glances, the hidden emotions, the intense encounter with Matthew—all of it left her feeling bewildered and unsettled.
Her mother gave her a concerned look. “You’ve been quiet, sweetheart. Is everything alright?”
“Yes, Mom. Just tired. It's been a long day,” Camille replied, forcing a smile. She knew she couldn’t confide in her mother about everything—at least, not yet.
Lying in bed that night, Camille stared at the ceiling, Matthew's words echoing in her mind. "You want an adventure. You want a fight." She knew he was right, but she also knew the road ahead was fraught with complications she couldn’t yet foresee.
Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new emotions, and perhaps a new understanding of what she truly wanted—and needed—from the enigmatic men who had suddenly become the center of her world.
Little did Camille know, the course of her heart had already been set in motion, and the coming days would only heighten the intensity of her feelings, pushing her to confront truths she wasn’t yet ready to face.
