Party night arrived, shrouding the school in excitement and anticipation. Camille stepped out of her house in an elegant dress that made her feel confident, if a bit nervous. Standing next to Noah, she entered the glittering ballroom, where streamers hung from the ceiling and soft music filled the air.
As they joined the dance floor, Camille glanced around, her heart sinking when she saw Matthew leaning against a wall, his expression unreadable. His eyes met hers for a brief second before looking away, deepening the mystery of his cold demeanor.
“What is he even doing here at the halloween party? Why would he come if not to stalk me?” she thought, her anxiety spiking.
Leo, meanwhile, prowled the edges of the room like a predator, his focus never shifting from Camille and Noah. The evening was a cocktail of emotions, and it was only a matter of time before things reached a boiling point.
After a few dances and a few cocktails, Camille's head was spinning. She decided to take a break and wander into the empty corridors of the school. Out of curiosity, she peeked into the principal's office, surprised to find it unlocked. When she stepped into the room, it was dark, smelled faintly of coffee, and was ominously silent.
Suddenly, she felt a very familiar scent of vanilla right behind her. Her body turned cold, and she didn’t know where to start or what to say. Matthew was messing with her mind without even uttering a word.
She turned around and looked at Matthew as if she were waiting for him to announce a death sentence. Everything blurred for a moment, and she summoned the courage to speak. “Why are you here?”
Matthew’s expression was unreadable, but his eyes flickered with a complex mix of emotions. “I could ask you the same thing, Camille.”
“I needed a break from everything,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “From all the confusion and drama.”
Matthew took a step closer, his presence overwhelming in the confined space. “You shouldn’t be alone right now, especially with Leo’s lies and Noah’s... naivety.”
“Why do you care all of a sudden?” Camille asked, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “You've been so cold to me, so distant. What happened?”
“I heard what Leo said,” Matthew admitted, his voice dropping to a whisper. “I’ve been trying to protect you from getting hurt, but I went about it all wrong.”
His confession hung in the air, and Camille’s heart ached at the realization. “Matthew, you don’t have to protect me by pushing me away. I can handle myself.”
