ADRIA'S POV.
I fell backwards immediately as a fierce gasp escaped me. I moved back quickly as it had been so close to me, and I lost my balance once more, falling to the floor. At that rate, I couldn't keep count of the number of times I had fallen. I had simply been in a state of continuous shock ever since I had met myself when I was. It felt like building up to a frequency at which it was going to burst, splatter and leave me dead.
Standing behind me was a figure in a black hood. It towered over me menacingly, but I couldn't see its face, and just then the wind picked up slowly. Something tickled my hair and I caught it immediately, only to find it was my hair.
"Please…" I heard myself whisper as I began to try my best to shift as far away as I could away from it, but my hands were too shaky to hold their ground on the floor. They buckled, and gave way, making me lay flat on the floor. I immediately, sat up, and scrambled to my feet, all the while keeping my eye on the creature in front of me. I was just too shocked to do anything. I couldn't even try to think on what next to do. If I ran, then I was in more trouble because it would give chase and there was nowhere to run.
"Do you think my land is somewhere you can just wander in?" It asked, and I screamed, placing my shaking hands on my cold ears as it spoke in distorted voices that seemed to come from everywhere.
"It's supposed to be my nightmares!" I screamed back against the lashing wind and my hair whipping all over my face.
"And why's it called a nightmare?" It asked once more taking a single step forward, and my trembling legs took three steps backwards.
"I… I…"
"Because in nightmares, you're never safe." It said, answering its own questions, and I continued to let my feet take me backwards. "In Nightmares, death is all around. In nightmares, you never go free." It continued to say, and I felt I was going to go crazy with the amount of fear in me.
"This is all in my subconscious! It's not real! I just… I just have to…"
"Would you like to see if it's just your subconscious? Would you like to see if it's not real? Do you want to see?" It asked, coming closer as it began to take a step at at time, after each other, slowly but steadily.
"I… please… just stop this." I begged, looking around once more to see if there was anything I could do to escape the nightmare, or anywhere I could run.
"They who put you here have not done well because I do not show mercy on whoever steps foot on my land. No I do not."
"Don't come closer! Don't you dare!" I shrieked as I took faster step backwards with my eyes all the while on him, and then a loud thunder boom took the sky in a rage. I screamed as loud as I could, closing my eyes tight, and holding my head.
"You will not leave here as you surely want. You will not. You will suffer, you will cry, you will beg." It threatened coming closer to me even more faster than it had done, and I turned on my heels and run, finally giving in to the call of my heels. I knew there was nowhere to run to but I did it anyway. My legs whipped out in front of me, lashing back the sand, and the wind flapped harshy against my ears.
My eyes watered, and my gasps came out even faster than my legs. I was running to live when it suddenly sprang up in front of me. I skidded to a halt pouring my hair all over my face but I didn't even brush it away, I turned away and started to run faster than any other athlete that I knew, crying loudly. I looked back, and saw it waiting. I didn't know why it was, but I wanted to get away from it as fast as I could.
Then I spotted a tree, and hope lit up in my heart. It sure wasn't going to climb a tree. I had seen that it had kept the hood of its cloak on all the while. It was because it didn't want to show its face and if it wanted to climb a tree, it had to look up. It had to see, and so it was going to wait for me to get down, but I had decided I was never getting down. Not until I was rescued. Even when I was about to be reduced by anyone, I was going to be on the tree. It was going to be the last place my wobbly legs stepped on.
I added more fire to my race, not even looking back once or slowing my pace until I was close to the tree.
It was the tallest tree I had picked, and I was going to climb to its highest. I slowed down my pace as I got there, and finally looked back, it was walking to me quickly and stiffly. I was right. It wasn't going to climb the tree. That's why it was walking as fast as it could.
I placed my hands on the lowest branch and swung myself upon it with a grunt. Then began to make my way on the branches closest to each other, being very careful. If only it had a lot of leaves, then I wouldn't have to watch the strange creature watching me. I heaved myself onto each branch and after a while, I got slower, but didn't stop.
I climbed until I was high, and very far from the ground. My breath was coming out a little shallow, and weak as I was exhausted.
Was this how it was in the subconscious? I thought I was somewhere in my mind so how was I still tired? Why was I still out of breath?
Finally, I got to the top and sat on a branch, then I made the mistake of looking down.
"Aaaah!" I screamed as I saw feet and feet below. Falling was a sure death.
I placed my hand on my crazily beating heart and tried to take in deep breaths so I wouldn't panic.
"Safe now?" I suddenly heard the distorted voice say. I whipped my head to the right and saw the hooded creature right next to me.
I looked to the ground but it was nowhere to be found.
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!" I screamed, and lost my balance on the tree.
And I fell.
