The Lies That Binds

Confronting the Storm

Ch. 113 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper stood frozen between Gabriel and Jasper, the tension in the café thickening with each passing second. Her heart raced as her gaze flicked from one man to the other, unsure of how to navigate the storm brewing between them. The air was heavy with unspoken words, unresolved emotions, and Piper felt like she was standing at the edge of a cliff, teetering dangerously close to a fall she wasn’t ready for.

Gabriel’s presence had always been a comfort, a steady, reassuring force that grounded her, even during the chaos. But Jasper... Jasper was her history. Her heart had been entangled with his for so long, and no matter how much she tried to untangle herself from him, those threads remained.

Now, both men stood before her, and Piper realized that she couldn’t run from this confrontation any longer.

Gabriel broke the silence first, his voice calm but carrying an unmistakable undercurrent of emotion. “Piper, I didn’t know Jasper would be here. I didn’t mean to interrupt anything.”

His gaze was steady, but there was something in his eyes — something vulnerable, as if he was trying to hide the sting of seeing her with Jasper.

Piper swallowed, her throat tight. “You’re not interrupting. We were just... talking.”

Jasper’s expression hardened slightly, but he stayed calm. “It’s fine, Gabriel. I wasn’t trying to corner Piper. I just needed to be honest with her. To let her know where I stand.”

Gabriel’s jaw tensed, and he glanced at Piper before responding. “I think she already knows where you stand, Jasper.”

The tension between the two men was palpable, and Piper could feel her anxiety mounting. This wasn’t what she wanted. She didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of some rivalry, a prize to be fought over. She wanted clarity, peace, and most of all, she wanted to figure out her own feelings without the pressure of their competing affections.

“Stop,” Piper said, her voice firmer than she expected. Both men turned their attention to her, their gazes filled with conflicting emotions. “I can’t do this.”

Gabriel’s expression softened. “Piper, you don’t have to —”

“No,” Piper cut him off, shaking her head. “I mean it. I can’t do this. Not like this.” She took a deep breath, steadying herself. “I’ve spent so long trying to sort through my feelings for both of you, and honestly, I don’t even know where I stand anymore. You both mean so much to me, but...”

She trailed off, struggling to find the words to explain the tangled mess of emotions inside her.

“But what?” Jasper asked gently, his eyes searching hers.

Piper looked at him, her heart aching. She had loved Jasper for so long — through all the ups and downs, through the heartbreak and the brief moments of joy. But the weight of their past was crushing, and no matter how much she tried to move forward, that past always seemed to pull her back.

“But I’m not sure if we can ever go back to what we were,” Piper admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “Too much has happened. I don’t know if I can forget the hurt, the betrayal. I don’t know if I can trust that we won’t end up right back where we started.”

Jasper’s face tightened, and Piper could see the pain in his eyes, the realization that the wounds between them were still too deep to heal overnight. But he didn’t push her. He just nodded, accepting her words.

“And Gabriel...” Piper turned to him, her heart heavy with the weight of what she had to say. “You’ve been there for me in ways I can’t even begin to explain. You’ve helped me through some of the hardest moments of my life, and I’ll always be grateful for that. But...”

Gabriel’s eyes softened, understanding dawning in them before she even finished her sentence. “But you’re not ready.”

Piper swallowed hard, nodding. “I’m not. I’m not ready to jump into anything, to make promises I can’t keep. I need time to figure out who I am without being pulled in a hundred different directions.”

There was a long pause, the weight of her words settling over them. Piper could feel the tension between Gabriel and Jasper easing slightly, though the emotional intensity in the room remained thick.

“I understand,” Gabriel said quietly, his voice filled with a mixture of disappointment and respect. “Take all the time you need, Piper. I’ll be here.”

Jasper’s gaze flickered between them before he spoke. “I get it too, Piper. I don’t want to push you into anything. I just... I needed you to know that I’m willing to fight for us if that’s what you want. But if it’s not, I won’t stand in your way.”

Piper’s heart clenched at the sincerity in both of their voices. It wasn’t easy for either of them to stand here and let her decide the course of their lives, but they were both giving her the space she so desperately needed.

“I appreciate that,” Piper said softly. “I do. I just need some time to breathe. To figure things out.”

Gabriel and Jasper exchanged a glance — one that held the weight of their rivalry, but also an unspoken agreement to respect her wishes. For now.

Jasper gave a short nod. “I’ll give you that, Piper. Just know that I’m not going anywhere.”

Gabriel’s gaze lingered on her for a moment before he spoke. “Same here.”

The tension between them had eased, but Piper could still feel the emotional weight pressing down on her. She wasn’t sure how to move forward, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like she had some control over her own heart again.

“I’ll see you both soon,” Piper said, her voice filled with quiet resolve.

Without another word, Gabriel turned and left the café, his footsteps fading into the distance. Jasper hesitated for a moment, his eyes filled with a mixture of hope and regret, before he followed suit.

As the door closed behind them, Piper stood in the now-empty café, her heart pounding in her chest. She had made the right decision — for now — but the emotional storm brewing inside her was far from over. She had managed to buy herself some time, but sooner or later, she would have to confront the feelings she had for both men.

Later that evening, after the café had closed and Lily was tucked into bed, Piper sat on the couch, her thoughts drifting back to the confrontation between Gabriel and Jasper. She had been so focused on creating distance, on protecting herself from getting hurt again, that she hadn’t fully processed just how much each of them still meant to her.

Gabriel had been her rock during some of the darkest moments of her life. His unwavering support had pulled her through when everything else felt like it was falling apart. But the secrets he had kept, the danger he had unknowingly brought into her life, still lingered like a dark cloud over their relationship.

And then there was Jasper. The man she had once loved so deeply, the man she had built a life with — until it all fell apart. No matter how much time had passed, no matter how much distance she had tried to put between them, there was still a part of her that loved him. But that love was tangled with so much pain, so much history, that she wasn’t sure if it was worth trying to salvage.

Piper let out a deep sigh, leaning her head back against the couch cushions. She had spent so long trying to focus on rebuilding her life, on creating stability for Lily, but the emotional turmoil inside her was making it hard to breathe.

Maybe the truth was, she didn’t know how to move forward because she hadn’t allowed herself to fully heal from the past. She had spent so much time keeping everyone at arm’s length, trying to protect herself, that she hadn’t stopped to think about what she really wanted.

The next morning, Piper woke early, her mind still swirling with the events of the previous day. She dressed quickly and made her way to the café, arriving before the sun had fully risen. The quiet of the early morning always brought her a sense of peace, and today, she needed that peace more than ever.

As she unlocked the door and stepped inside, she paused, letting the stillness of the café wash over her. It was moments like this — when the world felt calm and manageable — that Piper felt like she could breathe again.

But the calm didn’t last long.

The door swung open behind her, and Piper turned to see a familiar figure standing in the doorway. Her heart sank.

Noah.

He looked rougher than the last time she’d seen him — his hair disheveled, dark circles under his eyes. There was a desperation in his gaze, one that sent a chill down Piper’s spine.

“Piper,” Noah said, his voice low and strained. “We need to talk.”

Piper’s chest tightened as she met his gaze, dread creeping into her veins. She hadn’t expected to see Noah so soon, but the look on his face told her that whatever he had to say, it wasn’t good.

“What is it, Noah?” Piper asked, her voice steady despite the unease swirling inside her.

Noah stepped closer, his expression grim. “It’s about Lily. And the people I was involved with... they’re not finished. They’re coming for her.”
