The Lies That Binds

A Choice of Trust

Ch. 119 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The next morning, the house was eerily quiet, the stillness weighing heavily on Piper’s shoulders as she went about her routine. She glanced at the clock — Lily would be home from school in a few hours, and the thought of her daughter being anywhere near the danger Victor posed made Piper’s stomach twist in knots. Every step she took in the house felt like it could be watched, every creak of the floorboards made her heart race.

She had lived through threats before, but this felt different. More personal. More dangerous.

Piper tried to focus on her work, spending hours at the café preparing for the upcoming weekend rush. But no matter how hard she threw herself into her tasks, her mind kept drifting back to Gabriel, to Victor, and to the phone call that had shattered her fragile peace. The edges of her life felt like they were fraying again, and the certainty she had fought so hard to build was slipping away.

After she locked up the café for the day, she stood outside for a moment, staring at the sky. The wind was crisp and cool, and the leaves of the nearby trees rustled with the promise of autumn. But even in the quiet, Piper couldn’t shake the feeling that something — or someone — was watching her.

She pulled out her phone and hovered over Gabriel’s number. She hadn’t spoken to him since he’d left her house the night before, and though she had asked for space, part of her felt guilty for shutting him out. He was trying to protect her, after all. But could she really trust him to keep her safe? Or had his presence in her life simply drawn Victor’s attention?

Piper inhaled deeply before dialing his number. Gabriel picked up after the second ring, his voice immediately attentive.

“Piper?” he asked, and she could hear the tension in his voice. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” she said quickly, though her pulse was racing. “But we need to talk. This... Victor situation — it’s getting to me, and I don’t know what to do.”

Gabriel was silent for a moment, and she could almost picture him processing her words, trying to find the right response. “We need to meet in person,” he said finally. “I’ll explain everything. I’ll make sure you understand what we’re dealing with, and then we can figure out how to handle it together.”

Piper hesitated. “Together?” she echoed. “Gabriel, I don’t know if that’s the right idea. This is your past coming back to haunt you, and now Lily and I are caught in the middle of it. I need to protect my daughter.”

“I know,” Gabriel replied softly. “And that’s exactly why I want to help. I’ve been in this world longer than you, Piper. I know how dangerous Victor can be. But I also know how to stop him.”

Piper chewed on her lip, torn between wanting to trust Gabriel and her instinct to shield Lily from any more chaos. She had to be smart about this — whatever decision she made now could have lasting consequences.

“Where can we meet?” she asked, her voice quiet.

“I’ll come to your place,” Gabriel said. “But only if you’re comfortable with that. We can meet somewhere else if you’d prefer.”

Piper sighed. “No, it’s fine. Just come over. But don’t make it obvious. I don’t want to draw any attention.”

“I’ll be careful,” Gabriel assured her. “I’ll be there soon.”

An hour later, Gabriel arrived at her house, his presence a mix of reassurance and unease. Piper opened the door, and as their eyes met, the weight of the situation hung between them. Gabriel looked tired — his usual calm demeanor was shadowed by the intensity of what they were up against. But there was also something else in his gaze, something that made Piper’s heart skip a beat — determination.

Once they were seated in the living room, Gabriel spoke first. “Piper, I’m not going to sugarcoat this. Victor is dangerous. He’s not like the other people we’ve dealt with before. He’s calculated, and he knows how to manipulate people to get what he wants.”

Piper’s stomach churned as she listened, the gravity of the situation settling in. “What does he want, Gabriel?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Gabriel’s expression darkened. “Revenge. He blames me for the fall of his empire, and he’ll stop at nothing to make me pay. And if that means going after you or Lily, he won’t hesitate.”

A cold chill ran down Piper’s spine. “How do we stop him?” she asked, her voice trembling slightly. “I can’t let Lily be in danger. I won’t.”

Gabriel leaned forward, his gaze intense. “We stop him by staying one step ahead of him. I have contacts — people who can help track him down, make sure he doesn’t get too close. But I need you to trust me, Piper. I need you to let me protect you.”

Piper’s heart pounded in her chest as she processed his words. Trust. It was such a fragile thing, especially after everything they had been through. But as she looked into Gabriel’s eyes, she saw the sincerity there — the promise that he would do whatever it took to keep her and Lily safe.

“I want to trust you,” Piper said softly. “But I can’t keep living like this, Gabriel. Always looking over my shoulder, wondering if the next call I get will be another threat.”

Gabriel’s expression softened, and he reached out, gently taking her hand in his. “I don’t want that for you either. I wish I could go back and change things, but I can’t. All I can do is make sure Victor doesn’t get the chance to hurt you.”

Piper squeezed his hand, her chest tightening with emotion. “What if he already has people watching us?” she asked. “What if he’s waiting for the perfect moment to strike?”

“I won’t let that happen,” Gabriel said firmly. “I’ve already put measures in place to keep an eye on him. My contacts are working around the clock to track him down. But I need you to stay vigilant, Piper. If anything feels off, if you notice anyone suspicious, call me right away.”

Piper nodded, her mind racing. The thought of being watched, of being targeted by someone like Victor, was terrifying. But she couldn’t let fear paralyze her. She had to be strong — for herself, for Lily.

“Okay,” she said, her voice steadier now. “I’ll stay alert. But Gabriel, you have to promise me something.”

“Anything,” he said, his gaze unwavering.

“If it comes down to it,” Piper continued, her voice dropping to a whisper, “if Victor gets too close, I’ll take Lily and leave. I’ll disappear if I have to.”

Gabriel’s face tightened, and for a moment, Piper saw a flicker of pain in his eyes. “I understand,” he said quietly. “But I’ll do everything in my power to make sure it doesn’t come to that.”

They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of their conversation pressing down on them. Piper could feel the tension in the room — the unresolved emotions between them, the danger looming just beyond the walls of her home. But for now, they were safe. For now, they had time.

“I’m sorry I dragged you into this,” Gabriel said softly, breaking the silence. “I never wanted my past to put you in danger. I should have done more to protect you.”

Piper shook her head, her voice gentle. “You didn’t drag me into anything, Gabriel. This is my life too, now. And I chose to be with you, knowing what your past held.”

Gabriel’s expression softened, and he reached out to brush a strand of hair behind her ear. “You don’t have to carry this burden alone, Piper. I’m here for you. Always.”

Piper felt a lump form in her throat, her emotions swirling inside her. She wanted to believe him, wanted to trust that everything would be okay. But the scars of the past were still fresh, and the uncertainty of the future weighed heavily on her.

“I know,” she whispered. “But we have to be smart about this. I can’t afford to let my guard down.”

Gabriel nodded, his gaze steady. “We’ll get through this, Piper. Together.”

Later that night, after Gabriel had left, Piper sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the photo of her and Lily that sat on the nightstand. The familiar warmth of the picture felt distant now, overshadowed by the fear that had once again crept into her life. She had spent so long trying to rebuild her world, trying to create a safe and stable life for her daughter, and now it felt like everything was slipping away again.

She had promised herself that she wouldn’t be pulled back into the chaos, that she would focus on her own healing and her own future. But now, with Victor lurking in the shadows and Gabriel’s past threatening to destroy everything she had worked for, Piper wasn’t sure if she had the strength to fight.

But she had no choice.
