The Lies That Binds

A Choice Between Worlds

Ch. 133 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The silence between Piper and Jasper stretched out like an invisible wall, filled with everything they wanted to say but couldn’t. Jasper’s hand remained in hers, warm and familiar, and for a fleeting moment, she wondered if this was where she belonged — back in the safety of his arms. But the truth was, nothing was as simple as it used to be. The world she lived in now, the one Gabriel had dragged her into, had changed her forever.

“Jasper,” Piper said softly, pulling her hand away gently. The gesture wasn’t meant to push him away entirely, but to create some much-needed space. “I appreciate everything you’ve done for me, everything you’ve been to me. But I’m so lost right now. I don’t even know what I want anymore.”

Jasper’s face softened, though there was an unmistakable flicker of disappointment in his eyes. He shoved his hands into his pockets, trying to mask his hurt. “I get it. I can see how hard things have been. But you don’t have to face it alone, Piper. We were a family once. We could be together again.”

Piper’s heart lurched at his words. Family. It was such a simple word, yet it carried so much weight. For years, Jasper had been her rock, the father of her child, the man she thought she’d grow old with. But things hadn’t worked out that way. The lies, the pain, and now Gabriel — all of it had twisted her life into something unrecognizable.

“I know we were a family,” she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “But that was a long time ago. So much has changed, Jasper. I’ve changed.”

Jasper nodded, his expression resigned. “I know you have. I’ve seen it. You’ve been through more than anyone should have to. But, Piper, I still care about you. I never stopped. And I just… I just want to know if there’s still a place for me in your life.”

Piper bit her lip, torn between the pull of the past and the uncertainty of the future. She had loved Jasper once, deeply and without question. But now, her heart was a tangled mess, caught between what was safe and what was real. Her connection with Gabriel was intense, raw, and consuming, but it was also riddled with danger. Jasper represented stability, something she had craved for so long — but was that enough anymore?

Before she could respond, her phone buzzed on the kitchen counter, jolting her from her thoughts. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw Gabriel’s name flash across the screen.

She hesitated, glancing at Jasper, who had noticed the message too. He didn’t say anything, but the tension in his body was impossible to miss.

“Are you going to answer that?” he asked, his voice calm but edged with something darker.

Piper’s stomach churned. She could feel the weight of Jasper’s gaze on her, and the pull of Gabriel on the other end of the phone was just as strong. For a moment, she considered ignoring the call — choosing Jasper in that moment, even if it was only temporary.

But she couldn’t ignore Gabriel, not now. Not after everything.

With a shaky breath, she picked up the phone and answered. “Gabriel?”

There was a moment of silence on the other end before Gabriel’s voice came through, quiet but filled with urgency. “Piper, I need to see you. Now.”

Piper’s heart raced. “What’s going on?”

“I’ve found something,” Gabriel said, his tone clipped. “Something about Victor’s plans. It’s worse than I thought. I can’t explain everything over the phone. Just… Please, meet me at the warehouse.”

“The warehouse?” Piper frowned. “Isn’t that too dangerous?”

“Not tonight,” Gabriel replied. “I’ll be there alone. You’ll be safe.”

Piper hesitated, glancing at Jasper again. His jaw was tight, his eyes fixed on her with a mix of concern and something else — something that looked a lot like jealousy.

“I’ll be there,” she finally said, hanging up the phone.

Jasper let out a long breath, his frustration evident. “You’re going to him,” he stated, more than asked.

“I have to,” Piper said softly. “There’s something going on with Victor. Gabriel might have answers.”

“And what about us?” Jasper asked, his voice strained. “Where do I fit into all of this, Piper? Every time I try to be there for you, he shows up. You’ve got to make a choice. Him or me.”

Piper’s heart sank at the ultimatum. She hadn’t meant for it to come to this and hadn't wanted to hurt anyone. But now she was standing at the crossroads, and it felt like no matter what choice she made, someone was going to be left in the wreckage.

“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know what to do, Jasper. I’m just trying to survive.”

Jasper’s face softened, though the hurt in his eyes didn’t fade. “Then let me help you. Let me be the one you turn to when things get hard.”

Piper swallowed the lump in her throat, feeling the pull of his words. But before she could respond, the urgency of Gabriel’s call pressed against her consciousness. She couldn’t afford to think about this now — not with Victor still out there, lurking in the shadows, waiting for his chance to strike.

“I have to go,” she said, stepping toward the door.

Jasper’s hand shot out, gently grabbing her wrist. “Piper, wait. Please don’t go to him.”

Piper froze, torn between the man standing in front of her and the one waiting in the shadows. She met Jasper’s gaze, her heart heavy with indecision. “I have to do this,” she said quietly. “I have to see this through.”

Jasper’s grip on her wrist loosened, and after a moment, he let her go. “Then be careful,” he said, his voice barely audible. “And remember, I’ll always be here for you. No matter what.”

Piper’s heart ached as she nodded, her throat tight. She turned away from him and stepped out into the cool night air, leaving behind the safety of Jasper’s home and walking into the uncertainty of Gabriel’s world once more.

The warehouse loomed large in the distance, its shadowy figure barely visible in the dim light of the streetlamps. Piper’s nerves were on edge as she approached, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of danger. Gabriel had said it would be safe, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to go terribly wrong.

As she stepped inside, the air was thick with tension, the cold walls closing in around her. Gabriel stood near the far end of the room, his back to her as he stared at a table filled with papers and maps. He didn’t turn around as she entered, but Piper could feel the weight of his presence pulling her in.

“What did you find?” she asked, her voice echoing slightly in the empty space.

Gabriel turned slowly, his eyes dark with exhaustion. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days, the weight of his guilt and the danger surrounding them etched into his features. “Victor’s not just after me,” he said, his voice low and grim. “He’s after you. After Lily.”

Piper’s heart froze. “What? Why?”

Gabriel ran a hand through his hair, clearly struggling with what he was about to say. “Victor blames me for everything that’s happened. For the destruction of his empire. He wants to hurt me in the worst way possible, and that means going after the people I care about. You, Piper. He’s targeting you because he knows how much you mean to me.”

Piper’s blood ran cold as the full weight of Gabriel’s words hit her. She had known she was in danger, but this — this was personal. Victor wasn’t just another faceless threat. He was coming after her, after Lily, and it was because of Gabriel.

“What do we do?” Piper asked, her voice trembling.

“We have to end this,” Gabriel said, stepping closer to her, his expression intense. “I need to confront him. But I can’t do it alone. I need you to trust me, Piper. I know I’ve kept things from you, but everything I’ve done has been to protect you.”

Piper stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel the pull between them — the connection that had always been there, even when everything else felt uncertain. But now, with Victor’s threat looming over them, she didn’t know if trust was enough.

“Gabriel…” she began, but he interrupted her.

“I’m not asking you to forgive me,” he said, his voice raw with emotion. “But I need you to understand that I’m fighting for you. For us. For Lily. I’m not going to let Victor take that away.”

Piper’s heart clenched as she looked into his eyes, seeing the desperation and the sincerity in his gaze. He was fighting for her, but he had also kept her in the dark for so long. Could she really trust him to protect her now, when everything was hanging by a thread?

“I don’t know if I can do this,” Piper admitted, her voice barely a whisper. “I don’t know if I can trust you again.”

Gabriel’s face fell, but he nodded slowly, understanding. “I get it. But I’m not giving up on us. Not now.”

The tension between them was palpable, thick with unspoken feelings and unresolved hurt. Piper didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to move forward. All she knew was that the danger was real, and it was closing in around them.

“I need time,” she said, stepping back slightly. “I need to think.”

Gabriel nodded again, his expression pained but resigned. “Take all the time you need. But know this — I’ll be here. No matter what.”

Piper turned away, her heart heavy with the weight of everything that had happened. As she left the warehouse, the night air felt colder than ever, the uncertainty of what lay ahead pressing down on her like a storm on the horizon.
