Gabriel’s face tightened, and he ran a hand through his hair, his frustration evident. “Piper, it’s not that simple —”
“Then explain it to me!” Piper interrupted, her voice rising. “Explain how you could lie to me, how you could keep all of this from me after everything we’ve been through. You told me you wanted to protect me, but how can I trust anything you’ve said?”
Gabriel took a deep breath, his shoulders slumping slightly. He looked tired — exhausted, even. But Piper didn’t care. She wasn’t going to let him brush this off.
“I never wanted to hide it from you,” Gabriel said, his voice low. “I was trying to protect you. The deeper you got into this, the more dangerous it became. I thought if you knew the full extent of my involvement, you’d be scared, and I didn’t want that. I didn’t want you to look at me the way you’re looking at me now.”
Piper shook her head, her hands clenched into fists. “You should have told me the truth from the beginning. You should have given me the choice to decide if I wanted to stay in this with you.”
Gabriel’s jaw tightened, and he took a step closer to her. “I’m telling you the truth now. Yes, I was involved with them. I worked with those people, but it was never because I believed in what they were doing. It was because I wanted to tear them down from the inside. I’ve been trying to make up for the things I did in the past, Piper. I’m not that person anymore.”
Piper’s heart twisted at his words, but she couldn’t ignore the betrayal she felt. “How am I supposed to believe that? How am I supposed to believe anything you say after everything you’ve kept from me?”
Gabriel’s eyes softened, and for a moment, Piper saw the vulnerability beneath the walls he had built around himself. “Because I love you, Piper,” he said quietly. “I love you, and I would do anything to keep you and Lily safe. That’s why I’ve done what I’ve done.”

“If you loved me, you wouldn’t have lied to me,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “You wouldn’t have kept something this big from me.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened slightly, though the hurt in his eyes remained. “I didn’t lie to you. I just didn’t tell you everything because I knew how dangerous it would be if you got too close. I thought I was protecting you.”
“But that’s not your choice to make,” Piper snapped, her frustration boiling over. “You can’t decide what I need to know and what I don’t. That’s not how a relationship works, Gabriel.”
Gabriel’s shoulders slumped, and he looked away, his hands clenched at his sides. “I know I made mistakes. But I’m trying to fix them. I’m trying to be better.”
