The Lies That Binds

The Heart's Confession

Ch. 115 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The following day felt like a slow crawl for Jasper. Every tick of the clock in his office sent his heart pounding, reminding him that by the end of the day, he would finally confront Piper — face to face. After everything, he couldn’t help but wonder what the conversation would bring. Would it be closure or a second chance?

As the afternoon slipped into evening, Jasper wrapped up work earlier than usual. He needed time to clear his head before heading to the café. His car ride there was a blur, filled with nervous anticipation. By the time he arrived, the sun was beginning to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the street. The café’s soft lighting spilled out onto the sidewalk, creating a cozy, almost intimate ambiance.

Jasper parked and stared at the café for a long moment. His fingers drummed against the steering wheel, trying to summon the courage to face Piper. He hadn’t felt this anxious in years, and the weight of it settled heavily on his chest. But he couldn’t back out. Not now. Not when everything he wanted was just beyond that door.

Taking a deep breath, he climbed out of the car and made his way toward the café. The bell above the door jingled as he entered, and there she was — Piper, standing behind the counter, wiping down tables and preparing to close up for the night. The café was empty, save for the two of them, and the quiet made Jasper’s footsteps sound louder than usual.

Piper glanced up as he entered, her expression unreadable. She set down the cloth in her hands and wiped her palms on her apron. “Hey,” she said softly, her voice steady but carrying a trace of uncertainty.

“Hey,” Jasper replied, forcing a small smile. His heart raced as he stepped further into the room. The atmosphere between them was thick with unspoken words and a history too complicated to ignore.

Piper gestured toward one of the tables by the window. “Do you want to sit?”

Jasper nodded, following her to the table. They sat across from each other, a gulf of unspoken tension between them. For a moment, neither of them said anything, the silence stretching like a fragile thread between them.

Finally, Piper broke the silence. “Thank you for coming.”

“I wasn’t sure if you would ask,” Jasper admitted, leaning forward slightly. “But I’m glad you did.”

Piper’s gaze flickered to the table, her fingers tracing the edge of her mug before she finally looked up at him. “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking... about everything. About us. About the last few months.”

Jasper swallowed hard, nodding. “I have too.”

Piper took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts. “I’ve been trying to figure out where I stand — how I feel — and it hasn’t been easy. I think I’ve been avoiding this conversation because I didn’t know if I was ready to face it. To face us.”

Jasper’s heart pounded in his chest. He had imagined this conversation a hundred times in his head, but now that it was happening, it felt more real — and more terrifying — than he had expected. “I’ve been trying to figure it out too, Piper. I know I made mistakes. Big ones. And I know I hurt you.”

Piper’s eyes softened, though there was still a guardedness in them. “You did. But I hurt you too. We both made mistakes, Jasper. It wasn’t just you.”

He shook his head. “But I should have fought harder for us. I should have been honest about my feelings, instead of letting Isabel and everything else get in the way. I was a coward, and I let my insecurities ruin what we had.”

Piper’s lips tightened as she processed his words. “It wasn’t just your fault, though. I was scared too. Scared of what it would mean if we really tried again — if we let ourselves believe that we could make it work.”

Jasper’s gaze softened, and he leaned forward slightly, his voice gentle. “Do you still believe that we could make it work?”

Piper hesitated, her eyes flickering with uncertainty. “I don’t know, Jasper. I want to believe we could, but there’s so much that’s happened. So much history between us.”

Jasper nodded slowly, understanding the weight of her words. He had spent so much time regretting his choices, regretting how he had let their relationship slip away. Now, sitting here with Piper, he realized that he couldn’t keep holding onto that regret — he had to show her that he was ready to fight for her, for them, no matter how complicated it was.

“I know we’ve been through a lot,” Jasper said quietly. “But I’m willing to start from scratch. To rebuild, piece by piece, if that’s what it takes.”

Piper looked at him, her expression softening but still cautious. “You say that now, but... what about Gabriel? What about everything else that’s happened? Can we really just pick up the pieces and start over?”

Jasper clenched his fists under the table, his mind flashing back to Gabriel’s presence in her life. The thought of Gabriel being so close to her made his chest tighten with jealousy, but he pushed those feelings aside. This wasn’t about Gabriel — it was about him and Piper, and the future they could still build if she was willing to try.

“I can’t speak for Gabriel,” Jasper said honestly. “I don’t know where things stand between you two. But I do know that I love you, Piper. I’ve always loved you. And I’ll wait, no matter how long it takes, for you to decide what you want. I’m not giving up on us.”

Piper looked down, her fingers tapping against the table as she considered his words. The silence stretched again, but it wasn’t uncomfortable — it was filled with the weight of everything they had shared, everything that still lingered between them.

“I need time, Jasper,” Piper said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “I can’t make any promises right now.”

Jasper nodded, his heart sinking but understanding the hesitation in her voice. He had expected this — knew that their past couldn’t be erased with just one conversation. But the fact that she was willing to talk, willing to let him back into her life, was a step in the right direction.

“Take all the time you need,” Jasper said softly. “I’ll be there. Waiting.”

Piper looked up at him, her eyes meeting his, and for the first time in a long while, Jasper saw something flicker there — hope. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to keep him holding on, to keep him believing that they could find their way back to each other.

“Thank you,” Piper whispered, her voice filled with a quiet vulnerability.

Jasper reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers lightly. The touch was brief, but it sent a rush of warmth through him, reminding him of everything they had once shared — and everything they could still have if they were both willing to fight for it.

As they sat there in the quiet of the café, the weight of their past still hung over them, but there was also something new — a glimmer of possibility. It wouldn’t be easy. It would take time, patience, and trust. But for the first time in months, Jasper felt like they were finally moving in the right direction.

Later that night, after Jasper had left the café, Piper sat alone at one of the tables, staring out the window at the darkened street. The conversation with Jasper had been more intense than she had expected, and the emotions swirling inside her were still too raw, too unsettled.

She loved him. She knew that much. But love wasn’t enough. It never had been. Trust, patience, and forgiveness — those were the things that had always been missing between them. And no matter how much Jasper promised to fight for them, Piper knew that she needed time to figure out if she could truly forgive him — and herself — for everything that had happened.

Her phone buzzed on the table, pulling her from her thoughts.

Gabriel: I hope everything went okay with Jasper. I’m here if you need to talk.

Piper’s heart twisted at the sight of Gabriel’s name. He had been so patient, so supportive, even as she had kept him at arm’s length. But now, after talking with Jasper, she realized that she couldn’t keep stringing Gabriel along either. She needed to make a decision, to figure out what she truly wanted, and she couldn’t do that with both of them waiting in the wings.

Taking a deep breath, Piper typed out a response.

Me: It was a difficult conversation. But I’ll be okay. Thank you for checking in.

She hesitated for a moment before sending the message, her mind still spinning with everything that had been said. Gabriel had been her rock, her steady presence through all the chaos, but deep down, she knew that she couldn’t fully commit to him — or anyone — until she had worked through her lingering feelings for Jasper.

As she set her phone down and leaned back in her chair, Piper closed her eyes, trying to calm the storm of emotions inside her.
