The Lies That Binds

The Weight of Choices

Ch. 103 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper sat at her kitchen table, staring out the window as the late afternoon light began to fade. The shadows of the trees outside danced across the walls, and the familiar hum of the world outside seemed distant, muted by the chaos in her mind. Her phone buzzed on the table next to her, but she didn’t reach for it. She didn’t have the energy to deal with anyone or anything else right now.

The conversation with Jasper had left her emotionally drained. He had been so open, so honest about his regrets, his desire to fight for her — for them. She could see the sincerity in his eyes, the vulnerability in his words. It tugged at her heart, stirring memories of the life they had once shared. A life that, despite everything, she hadn’t completely let go of.

But how could she?

Her life had become a tangled web of emotions, relationships, and heartbreak. Between Jasper and Gabriel, the lines of loyalty and love had become so blurred that she could barely distinguish where one ended and the other began.

Gabriel’s confession — the raw honesty with which he had laid everything out — had shaken her. She loved him, there was no denying that. But love had never been the issue. Trust was. He had lied, withheld crucial parts of his past, and while his intentions might have been good, the sting of those secrets still lingered.

And now, Jasper wanted a second chance. He was offering her the possibility of a fresh start, but could she trust him not to let her down again? Could she risk reopening old wounds?

The buzzing of her phone interrupted her thoughts again, pulling her back to the present. This time, she glanced at the screen and saw Gabriel’s name flash across it. A pang of guilt shot through her. She hadn’t spoken to him since his last text — since he’d asked to talk. She had agreed, but now, sitting in the quiet of her kitchen, she wasn’t sure she could handle another emotional conversation.

Her finger hovered over the screen, but before she could decide whether to answer, the call ended. A second later, a message appeared:

Gabriel: I need to see you. There’s something important I need to tell you.

Piper stared at the message, her heart pounding. What could Gabriel possibly have left to say? She felt like they had already unpacked every secret, every painful truth. And yet, the urgency in his words made her uneasy.

With a deep breath, she typed back a quick response:

Me: Okay. I’ll meet you tomorrow.

As she set her phone down, her thoughts drifted back to Jasper. He had left the café with so much unsaid between them, and she hated the idea of leaving things in limbo. But how could she possibly make a decision when her heart was so divided? The part of her that still loved Jasper — the part that longed for the simplicity they had once shared — fought against the part of her that had found something new with Gabriel. And then there was the guilt — the overwhelming guilt of having two men, both of whom had risked so much for her, waiting for her to choose.

What if I can’t choose?

The question lingered in her mind like a dark cloud. Maybe she wasn’t ready to make a decision. Maybe the damage was too deep, the pain too fresh. Maybe she needed more time — more space to figure out what she truly wanted.

The next morning, Piper drove to the spot Gabriel had chosen for their meeting. It wasn’t anywhere dramatic — just a quiet park on the outskirts of town, a place where the sound of rustling leaves and birdsong filled the air. She parked her car and stepped out, the crisp autumn air hitting her skin and making her shiver slightly.

Gabriel was already there, standing near one of the benches with his hands in his pockets. He looked better — his recovery was slow but steady, and the gauntness that had clung to him in the hospital was starting to fade. But there was still a weight in his expression, a kind of heaviness that hadn’t been there before.

When he saw her, his face softened, though the tension between them was palpable.

“Piper,” he greeted, his voice warm but cautious.

“Gabriel.” She gave him a small nod, trying to keep her emotions in check. “What did you want to talk about?”

He gestured toward the bench, and they both sat down, the quiet of the park wrapping around them. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Piper waited, her heart pounding in her chest, while Gabriel seemed to be gathering his thoughts.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about everything,” he began, his voice low. “About the choices I’ve made. The mistakes. And about us.”

Piper’s stomach twisted at the mention of us. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to have this conversation — wasn’t sure if she was ready to face whatever truth Gabriel was about to reveal.

“I told you I love you,” he said, his eyes searching hers. “And I meant it. I still mean it. But I realize now that I’ve been selfish. I kept things from you — things that you deserved to know — and I hurt you in ways I didn’t expect.”

Piper’s throat tightened, but she stayed silent, letting him continue.

“I thought I was protecting you by keeping my past hidden,” Gabriel said, his voice tinged with regret. “But I see now that all I did was push you away. And I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for the pain I caused.”

Piper blinked, her emotions swirling. She had heard his apologies before — had felt the sincerity behind them — but there was something different in his voice now. Something deeper.

“I’m not asking for forgiveness,” Gabriel continued, his hands clenched in his lap. “And I’m not asking you to make any decisions about us right now. I just... I need you to know that I’ve changed. That I’m not the same man who got caught up in all that mess.”

Piper’s heart twisted painfully. She knew Gabriel was trying — she could see how much he had been fighting to leave his past behind, to become someone she could trust. But trust was fragile, and once it was broken, it took more than words to repair it.

“Gabriel,” she said softly, “I know you’ve changed. And I know you love me. But I don’t know if I’m ready to trust you again. Not completely.”

His face fell slightly, though he nodded in understanding. “I get that. I do. And I’m willing to wait as long as it takes for you to be ready. I’m not going anywhere.”

Piper looked down at her hands, the weight of his words settling over her. Gabriel had always been patient, always willing to give her space when she needed it. But even with all his reassurances, the fear of being hurt again lingered in the back of her mind.

“Jasper came by the café yesterday,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.

Gabriel’s expression didn’t change, though she saw the flicker of something in his eyes — something like resignation. “I figured he would.”

“He told me he wants a second chance,” Piper continued, her chest tightening with the weight of the truth. “He wants to start over.”

Gabriel was silent for a moment, his gaze distant as if he was processing her words. Then, finally, he spoke. “And what do you want?”

Piper bit her lip, unsure of how to answer. “I don’t know,” she said honestly. “I’m so torn between everything — between the past I had with Jasper and the future I thought I could have with you. I don’t want to hurt either of you, but I feel like no matter what I choose, someone is going to get hurt.”

Gabriel let out a long breath, his eyes filled with an emotion she couldn’t quite name. “I don’t want to pressure you, Piper. I just want you to be happy. And if that means you choose Jasper, then... I’ll respect that.”

Piper’s heart clenched at his words, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. She had never wanted to be in this position — never wanted to be the one who had to choose between two men she cared about deeply. But here she was, standing at a crossroads, unsure of which path to take.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “But I need time to figure it out.”

Gabriel nodded, though the sadness in his eyes was undeniable. “Take all the time you need.”

They sat in silence for a few more moments, the weight of their conversation hanging between them like a thick fog. Piper’s heart felt heavy, torn between the two men who had both given her so much — and yet taken so much from her in return.
