The Lies That Binds

A Shifting Balance

Ch. 112 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The next morning at the café was busier than usual. The weekend crowd poured in early, filling the small space with chatter and the comforting scent of freshly brewed coffee. Piper moved through the café, greeting regulars with a smile and chatting briefly with new customers. It felt good to see the café thriving again, and for a brief moment, she allowed herself to feel proud of what she had rebuilt.

Gabriel had shown up just after opening, offering his help like he had in the days before. He didn’t overstep, didn’t push — he just blended into the rhythm of the café, helping with whatever needed doing. Piper appreciated his presence, though she remained careful to keep an emotional distance, wary of letting her guard down too soon.

But it was becoming harder to maintain that distance. Gabriel had been nothing but supportive, respectful of her boundaries, and his quiet strength had a way of grounding her, reminding her that she didn’t have to handle everything on her own. The problem was, the more time she spent around him, the more she found herself wanting to lean into that support — wanting to let him back into her life, not just as a colleague or friend, but something more.

And that scared her.

Piper had spent so long trying to protect herself from the emotional chaos that came with her relationships with Gabriel, Jasper, and even Noah. Letting any of them back in felt like a risk — a risk she wasn’t sure she was ready to take.

Later that afternoon, as the café slowed down, Gabriel joined Piper at one of the corner tables, taking a seat across from her. He set down two cups of tea — one for her, one for himself — and leaned back in his chair, watching her with that same quiet intensity she had come to know so well.

“I can see it’s been a busy day,” Gabriel said, his voice gentle. “You’ve barely had a moment to sit down.”

Piper smiled tiredly, wrapping her hands around the warm cup. “Yeah, but it’s a good kind of busy. I’m just glad people are coming back.”

“They’re not just coming back because of the coffee,” Gabriel said, his gaze steady. “They come back because of you. You’ve created something special here, Piper.”

His words warmed her, but they also stirred something else — something deeper. Piper had always prided herself on her independence, on her ability to stand on her own two feet. But the way Gabriel looked at her, the way he spoke to her, reminded her that sometimes, it was okay to let someone in. To let someone care.

“I appreciate that,” Piper said softly, her heart fluttering in her chest. “But I still have a lot to figure out.”

Gabriel nodded, his expression serious. “I know. I’m not here to rush you. I just... I want you to know that I believe in you. No matter what happens, no matter how long it takes — I’ll always be here.”

Piper’s throat tightened at his words. She looked down at her tea, unsure of how to respond. She had spent so much time trying to keep her emotions in check, trying to maintain that distance, but Gabriel’s sincerity was wearing down her defenses.

“I don’t know if I can trust myself to make the right decision,” Piper admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “Every time I’ve let someone in, it’s ended up hurting me.”

Gabriel leaned forward, his gaze soft but unwavering. “I understand that. And I don’t blame you for being cautious. But I promise you, Piper — I’m not here to hurt you. I’m here because I care. And I’ll wait for as long as you need.”

There was a long pause between them, the weight of Gabriel’s words hanging in the air. Piper felt the familiar pull of emotions — the urge to trust him, to let him in — but fear still held her back. She wasn’t ready to risk her heart again. Not yet.

“I’m not ready,” she said finally, her voice trembling with the effort it took to say the words.

Gabriel’s expression softened even further. “That’s okay. I’m here as long as you need me to.”

After Gabriel left for the evening, Piper found herself alone in the café, the quiet of the empty space pressing in on her. She leaned against the counter, her thoughts spinning in a thousand different directions. Gabriel had made his intentions clear — he wasn’t going to give up on her. But what about Jasper? Or Noah?

As much as she tried to ignore it, her feelings for Jasper were still there, lingering just below the surface. They had shared so much history together, so many memories, both good and bad. Part of her still loved him — still wanted to believe that they could rebuild what had been broken between them. But every time she thought about giving him another chance, the wounds from their past came rushing back, reminding her that love wasn’t always enough.

And Noah... Piper let out a sigh, running a hand through her hair. Noah had been a part of her life for so long, but his betrayal had left scars that were still too fresh to heal. He had put her and Lily in danger, and even though he had tried to make amends, Piper couldn’t shake the feeling that he was still holding something back. There was always a darkness surrounding Noah, a part of him she couldn’t fully trust.

As much as she wanted to focus on rebuilding her life and keeping her distance from all three men, she couldn’t deny that they were still deeply intertwined with her emotions. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t untangle herself from the complicated web they had all woven together.

That night, as Piper lay in bed, her thoughts were still racing. The café was thriving, Lily was happy and settled, but her heart remained a storm of unresolved feelings. She had spent so much time focusing on the practical aspects of her life — keeping her business running, making sure Lily was safe — that she had neglected to deal with her own emotions. And now, they were catching up with her.

She closed her eyes, trying to push away the thoughts of Gabriel’s gentle smile, Jasper’s lingering presence, and Noah’s shadow that seemed to follow her wherever she went. But sleep didn’t come easily. It never did when her heart was this heavy.

The next morning, Piper arrived at the café early to get a head start on the day. She unlocked the door and stepped inside, the familiar smell of coffee and pastries already filling the air. The quiet of the morning felt comforting, and for a brief moment, Piper allowed herself to feel at peace.

That peace was short-lived.

Just as Piper was finishing setting up the counter, the door swung open, and in walked Jasper.

Piper’s breath caught in her throat. She hadn’t expected to see him today — hadn’t expected to see him at all, really. He had respected her request for space, but now, standing in the doorway of her café, he looked like a man with something important to say.

“Jasper,” Piper said, her voice steady despite the sudden rush of emotions.

“Piper,” he replied, his tone soft but determined. “I know you asked for time, and I’ve been giving you that. But I couldn’t stay away any longer.”

Piper crossed her arms over her chest, bracing herself for whatever was coming next. “What do you want, Jasper?”

Jasper took a deep breath, stepping closer. “I want to talk. I want to make things right.”

Piper’s heart pounded in her chest. She had heard these words before. So many times, Jasper had come back into her life, promising to fix things, to rebuild what they had lost. But every time, something had come between them — whether it was his lingering feelings for Autumn, their trust issues, or the emotional baggage they both carried from the past.

“Jasper, we’ve been through this,” Piper said, her voice firm. “I don’t know if things can ever go back to the way they were.”

“I’m not asking for things to go back,” Jasper said quickly. “I know we can’t undo the past. But I’m asking for a chance to move forward — to build something new. Something better.”

Piper looked at him, her heart aching with the weight of his words. She wanted to believe him, wanted to believe that they could find a way to make things work. But the fear of getting hurt again held her back.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” Piper admitted, her voice trembling.

Jasper’s eyes softened, and he took another step closer, his gaze never leaving hers. “I know I’ve made mistakes, Piper. And I know I’ve hurt you. But I love you. I’ve always loved you. And I’m willing to do whatever it takes to prove that to you.”

Piper’s breath hitched in her throat. She had spent so long trying to protect herself from these emotions, from the possibility of getting hurt again. But now, standing here with Jasper, she could feel the walls she had built around her heart beginning to crack.

“Jasper, I...” Piper trailed off, unsure of how to finish the sentence.

Before she could say anything more, the door to the café swung open again, and Piper’s heart dropped as Gabriel walked in.

The tension in the room was palpable as the two men locked eyes. Piper could feel the weight of their unspoken rivalry hanging in the air, and for a moment, she wasn’t sure what to do.

“Gabriel,” Jasper said, his tone wary but measured.

“Jasper,” Gabriel replied, his voice calm but guarded.

Piper stood frozen between them, her heart racing as she realized that the moment she had been dreading — the moment when she would have to choose between them — was fast approaching.
