The Lies That Binds

Choices and Consequences

Ch. 130 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper stood alone on the porch, the cool evening breeze brushing against her skin as Gabriel’s car disappeared into the distance. Her mind was spinning, and her heart felt heavier than ever. The day had started with the promise of some semblance of normalcy, but that hope had quickly been shattered.

Victor was gone, but the nightmare wasn’t over.

Piper leaned against the wooden railing, staring blankly at the darkening sky. The threat of Victor’s associates loomed over her like an invisible shadow, closing in with every passing second. No matter how hard she tried to escape the chaos of Gabriel’s world, it kept dragging her back. She was caught between fear and survival, between love and safety, and the burden of those choices felt insurmountable.

She heard a creak behind her as the door opened. Jasper stepped outside, his expression calm but filled with unspoken concern. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice soft but steady.

Piper didn’t answer right away. She wasn’t sure if she was okay. How could she be, when everything in her life felt like it was unraveling at the seams?

“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice quiet and uncertain. “I don’t know how to feel anymore.”

Jasper moved closer, his presence warm and familiar. “You’ve been through so much, Piper. It’s okay to feel lost right now.”

Piper bit her lip, turning to face him. She could see the sincerity in his eyes, the worry etched into his features. Jasper had always been steady, a rock she could lean on when everything else fell apart. But lately, even that certainty had begun to slip away.

“I’m tired, Jasper,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “I’m tired of being scared. I’m tired of not knowing what’s going to happen next. I just… I don’t know what to do.”

Jasper reached out, gently brushing his fingers against her arm. “You don’t have to figure it all out right now. You’ve been holding everything together for so long, but it’s okay to let someone else carry some of that weight.”

Piper looked down, her chest tight with emotion. She had been holding on so tightly — to her fears, to her responsibilities, to her uncertainty — that she hadn’t let herself breathe. She hadn’t let herself feel what she needed to feel.

“I don’t know how to let go,” she admitted.

Jasper’s hand lingered on her arm, his touch steady and reassuring. “Then let me help you.”

His words were simple, but they hit Piper like a wave crashing over her. She felt a rush of conflicting emotions. Jasper’s offer was genuine, and she could see that he still cared deeply for her. But standing next to him, with the weight of Gabriel’s recent visit fresh on her mind, Piper realized how complicated everything had become.

Before she could respond, a flicker of movement caught her eye. She glanced down the street and saw another figure walking toward her house — Noah.

Piper’s heart skipped a beat as she watched him approach, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. There was something different about him tonight — something heavier in his steps, a weariness she hadn’t seen before. She felt a pang of guilt, knowing that she had asked for space but that Noah, too, was struggling with the choices they had all made.

Jasper noticed her gaze and turned to see Noah coming closer. His expression tensed, and a flicker of irritation crossed his face. “You’ve got company,” he muttered, stepping back.

Piper winced at the tension in Jasper’s voice, but she couldn’t bring herself to push Noah away. Not yet.

When Noah finally reached the porch, he stopped just short of the steps, his gaze shifting between Piper and Jasper. The air grew thick with unspoken words, and the silence stretched for what felt like an eternity.

“I’m sorry to drop by like this,” Noah said, his voice low and strained. “I just… I needed to talk to you, Piper.”

Piper swallowed hard, nodding as she wrapped her arms around herself. “Okay. Let’s talk.”

Jasper gave her a lingering look, but he didn’t argue. “I’ll give you two some space,” he said, his voice neutral. “But I’m here if you need me.”

Piper watched as Jasper walked back into the house, her heart heavy with the weight of everything unsaid between them. She wasn’t sure what she needed anymore, or how to make sense of her tangled emotions.

Noah climbed the steps to stand beside her, his posture tense. “I know I’m probably the last person you want to see right now, but I couldn’t stay away. Not after everything that’s happened.”

Piper didn’t respond right away. She could feel the confusion swirling inside her, the conflict between wanting to keep him at a distance and the part of her that still cared for him, even after everything they had been through.

“Noah, I told you I needed time,” she said softly, not meeting his gaze. “I can’t just… forget everything that’s happened.”

Noah nodded, his face etched with regret. “I know. And I’m not asking you to forget. I’m just asking for a chance to make things right.”

Piper sighed, leaning against the porch railing. “I don’t even know what ‘right’ looks like anymore. Every time I think we’re getting back to normal, something else happens. And now with Gabriel’s past… it feels like I’m trapped in this never-ending cycle of danger and heartbreak.”

Noah’s jaw tightened. “I know Gabriel’s been there for you, and I know he’s protected you and Lily. But he’s also part of the reason you’re in danger in the first place. His world… it’s not safe for you. It never will be.”

Piper flinched at Noah’s words, knowing that there was truth in them. Gabriel’s past had brought a world of chaos into her life, but the connection she felt with him was undeniable. And despite the danger, Gabriel had never wavered in his commitment to protect her and Lily.

But Noah wasn’t wrong. Gabriel’s world was filled with shadows, and those shadows had a way of creeping into her life, threatening to consume everything.

“I don’t know what to do,” Piper admitted, her voice trembling. “I care about Gabriel, but I don’t know if I can live in that world forever. I’ve been so focused on surviving, I don’t even know what I want anymore.”

Noah took a step closer, his voice soft but urgent. “You don’t have to make a decision right now, Piper. But I need you to know that I’m here. I want to be part of your life again. I know I screwed up, but I’m trying to change.”

Piper’s chest tightened as she looked up at him, seeing the vulnerability in his eyes. Noah had hurt her deeply, but she could also see how much he was trying to make amends. He had been part of her life for so long, and there was a time when she had loved him with everything she had.

But love wasn’t enough to erase the past. And as much as she wanted to believe in Noah’s redemption, she couldn’t ignore the scars left behind by his choices.

“I need time, Noah,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I can’t make any promises right now. I need to figure out what’s best for Lily and for me.”

Noah nodded, though his shoulders slumped with the weight of her words. “I understand. I’ll wait, Piper. I’ll wait as long as it takes.”

Piper watched as Noah turned and walked away, leaving her alone on the porch once more. Her heart ached with the weight of it all — Gabriel’s unwavering protection, Jasper’s steady presence, and Noah’s desperate attempts at redemption. They were all pulling her in different directions, and she didn’t know which way to turn.

She glanced up at the night sky, the stars twinkling overhead like distant beacons of hope. She wanted to believe that there was a way out of this mess, a way to find peace in the chaos. But for now, all she could do was keep moving forward, one step at a time.

Piper took a deep breath, letting the cool night air fill her lungs. Tomorrow would bring new challenges, new choices. But tonight, she allowed herself a moment of stillness, a moment to breathe in the calm before the storm that she knew was coming.
