The Lies That Binds

The Quiet Before the Storm

Ch. 110 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The weeks continued to pass and despite the emotional upheaval Piper had experienced, life at the café and at home started to feel more manageable. Each day brought a new routine, a fresh opportunity to focus on rebuilding. Her mornings were spent rushing Lily off to school, her afternoons dedicated to the café, and her evenings spent with her daughter, soaking up every moment of Lily’s laughter, her innocent joy, and the way she could brighten any room.

Piper had thrown herself into her work with renewed determination. The café was bustling again, customers filling the tables, and the smell of fresh coffee and baked goods filled the air. It was a small victory — one that reminded her of the strength she had inside. She was capable of creating something stable, something strong, even when her personal life was anything but.

But even as Piper moved forward, trying to focus on Lily and the café, the emotional weight of the past still clung to her. It was like a shadow, lingering just out of reach, waiting for the right moment to drag her back into the tangled web of her complicated relationships with Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah.

One afternoon, while working at the café, Piper was arranging fresh flowers on the counter when the doorbell chimed. She glanced up, expecting to see one of her regulars, but instead, she was met with the familiar face of Gabriel.

Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t seen him since their last brief conversation when he had promised to give her space. And though she had appreciated his understanding, part of her had missed him. His presence had been a constant in her life for so long that his absence left a noticeable void.

Gabriel stepped inside, his dark eyes locking with hers. He looked the same as always — strong, steady, but there was something softer in his expression now, as if he understood the fragility of the moment between them.

“Hey,” he said quietly, his voice carrying over the sounds of the bustling café.

Piper wiped her hands on her apron and forced a smile. “Hey, Gabriel. How are you?”

“I’m good,” he said, though his eyes held a question that he hadn’t yet asked. “I wasn’t sure if I should come by, but... I’ve been thinking about you.”

Piper’s smile faltered slightly, her heart tightening at his words. She had been thinking about him too, though she had tried to push those thoughts aside. “I appreciate you giving me space. I needed it.”

“I know,” Gabriel said, stepping closer to the counter. “And I’m not here to pressure you. I just wanted to see how you’re doing. How Lily’s doing.”

Piper hesitated, torn between her desire for distance and the warmth that Gabriel’s presence brought. “We’re doing okay. The café is doing well, and Lily’s adjusting to everything.”

Gabriel nodded, his gaze softening as he looked around the café. “The place looks great. You’ve done an amazing job rebuilding it.”

“Thanks,” Piper said, the tension in her chest easing slightly. “It wasn’t easy, but... I’m getting there.”

There was a brief silence between them, a moment where neither of them knew quite what to say. Piper could feel the weight of the unspoken words hanging in the air — the things they hadn’t addressed, the emotions they hadn’t fully explored.

Gabriel broke the silence first. “I know you’ve been through a lot, Piper. And I know I haven’t made things easier with... everything that’s happened. But I want you to know that I’m here. No matter what you decide, no matter what happens between us — I’ll always be here for you and for Lily.”

Piper swallowed hard, the sincerity in his voice tugging at her heart. She wanted to trust him, wanted to believe that things could be simple between them, but nothing about their situation was simple.

“I know,” Piper said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I’m not ready yet, Gabriel. I still need time to figure things out.”

Gabriel’s eyes held hers for a moment longer before he nodded. “I understand. I’m not going anywhere.”

He gave her a small, reassuring smile before stepping back toward the door. Piper watched him go, her heart heavy with the knowledge that while she wasn’t ready to let him back in fully, part of her didn’t want to let him go either.

That evening, after the café had closed and Lily was asleep, Piper sat on the couch, her thoughts drifting back to her conversation with Gabriel. She had been so focused on protecting herself, on keeping her distance, that she hadn’t allowed herself to truly process what she felt for him.

But it wasn’t just Gabriel. It was Jasper too. And even Noah, despite everything he had done.

Piper leaned back against the couch cushions, her mind swirling with memories and emotions. She had loved Jasper once — deeply, fiercely — and part of her still did. But that love had been fractured by years of hurt and betrayal. Could they ever get back to what they once had?

Then there was Noah. His betrayal had cut her deeply, and yet there was a part of her that remembered the good times — the moments when they had been a family, when things had felt stable and safe. But those moments had been an illusion, shattered by the truth of Noah’s involvement with the criminal organization. Trusting him again seemed impossible, yet there was still a part of her that wondered if he could change.

And Gabriel... Gabriel had been her rock, her protector. He had risked everything to keep her and Lily safe. But even he had secrets — secrets that had put them in danger.

Piper sighed, rubbing her temples. She had tried to put all of this aside, to focus on Lily and the café, but the emotions were always there, just beneath the surface, waiting to pull her back in.

Maybe Claire had been right. Maybe she was running from her feelings, hoping that distance would make them disappear. But they weren’t disappearing. They were only growing stronger.

A few days later, as Piper was opening the café for the day, Jasper showed up again. His visits were becoming more frequent, and though Piper had asked for space, he seemed determined to show her how much he cared.

“Morning,” Jasper said as he walked in, his smile warm but cautious.

“Morning, Jasper,” Piper replied, keeping her tone light.

“I wanted to stop by and see how things were going,” he said, leaning against the counter. “And... to see you.”

Piper sighed softly. “Jasper, we’ve talked about this.”

“I know,” he said quickly, his eyes earnest. “But I can’t stop thinking about you, Piper. I’ve made mistakes, I know that. But I want to make things right. I want to be there for you and for Lily.”

Piper’s chest tightened at his words. She had heard them before — felt them before — but that didn’t make them any less powerful.

“I care about you, Jasper,” she said softly. “But I can’t just forget everything that’s happened. I can’t go back to the way things were.”

“I’m not asking you to,” Jasper said, his voice filled with emotion. “I just want a chance to prove that we can move forward. That we can build something new.”

Piper looked into his eyes, searching for the answers she wasn’t sure she could find. Part of her wanted to believe him, wanted to give him that chance. But another part of her was still too scared — too hurt — to open herself up to that possibility.

“I don’t know if I’m ready,” she admitted, her voice barely a whisper.

Jasper nodded, his expression softening. “I’ll wait, Piper. For as long as it takes.”

There was a moment of silence between them, heavy with unspoken emotions. Finally, Jasper gave her a small smile and stepped back toward the door.

“I’ll see you soon,” he said quietly before leaving the café.

Piper watched him go, her heart torn between the past and the present. She had tried so hard to put distance between herself and the men in her life, but no matter how far she ran, the emotional ties remained.

Later that night, as Piper lay in bed, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was coming — something that would force her to make a choice. She had tried to avoid it for so long, but the storm that had been brewing in her heart was growing stronger, and sooner or later, she would have to face it.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, and Piper glanced at the screen, half expecting it to be Gabriel or Jasper again. But it wasn’t.

Noah: Piper, I need to talk to you. It’s important. Please.

Piper stared at the message, her heart pounding. She hadn’t heard from Noah in weeks and part of her had hoped that he would stay away, that she wouldn’t have to confront him or the feelings she still harbored for him. But now, with this message, everything came rushing back.

She didn’t know what Noah wanted, but one thing was certain: whatever it was, it would complicate her life even further.

Piper set the phone down, her mind racing. She wasn’t ready to deal with Noah. Not now. But she knew that avoiding him wouldn’t solve anything.

As she lay there, staring up at the ceiling, Piper felt the weight of her unresolved emotions pressing down on her. Gabriel, Jasper, and now Noah. They were all still there, lingering in the background, waiting for her to make a decision.

And no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t ignore them forever.
