The Lies That Binds

The Ties That Bind

Ch. 105 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper spent the rest of the day lost in thought, her mind replaying her conversation with Noah over and over again. His apology had been sincere — she could see the regret in his eyes, hear the desperation in his voice — but no matter how much he said he had changed, the past still loomed large between them. His betrayal, the lies, the danger he had put Lily in... it was all too much to just forget.

And yet, deep down, a part of her still wanted to believe him.

The familiar hum of her phone vibrating on the kitchen counter interrupted her thoughts. For a moment, she hesitated, wondering who it could be — Gabriel? Jasper? Or maybe Noah again, desperate for another chance to make things right?

With a sigh, she picked up the phone and glanced at the screen. To her surprise, it wasn’t any of the men who had been pulling at her heart. It was her other lawyer, Claire.

Piper quickly swiped to answer. "Claire, hi. What’s going on?"

“Piper,” Claire began, her voice steady but serious. “I wanted to update you on the latest developments with Noah. I just received some new information, and it’s... well, it’s something you need to hear.”

Piper’s stomach clenched. “What kind of information?”

Claire’s pause on the other end of the line only heightened her anxiety. “There’s been more investigation into Noah’s involvement with the criminal organization. It seems that despite his claims of cutting ties with them, there’s still some... murky territory. Nothing conclusive yet, but it’s enough to raise some red flags.”

The blood drained from Piper’s face. After everything Noah had told her — after all his apologies and his desperate plea for a second chance — was it possible he was still involved? Had he lied to her again?

“Noah said he was done with all of that,” Piper said, her voice shaky. “He said he cut ties.”

“I know,” Claire replied gently, “And he might be telling the truth. But from what we’ve gathered, it’s clear the organization isn’t done with him. Whether he’s willing or not, he may still be tied to their activities. I just wanted to make sure you’re aware of the situation — especially given your custody arrangements.”

Custody. Lily.

Piper’s heart pounded in her chest. She had been so focused on her own tangled emotions — on Gabriel, on Jasper, on Noah’s apology — that she had forgotten the most important part of all of this: keeping her daughter safe.

“I don’t know what to do,” Piper admitted, her voice breaking. “Noah says he wants to be a part of Lily’s life, that he’s trying to change. But how can I trust him if he’s still involved with those people?”

“That’s a decision only you can make,” Claire said softly. “But my advice is to proceed with caution. Whatever Noah’s intentions are, the fact remains that his past is catching up with him. You need to protect yourself and Lily.”

Piper nodded, though she knew Claire couldn’t see her. “Thank you for letting me know.”

After hanging up, Piper stood in the middle of her kitchen, her hands trembling slightly as she processed the news. How could everything have spiraled so far out of control? Just when she thought she was starting to regain some sense of normalcy, the walls began to close in again.

She walked to the window, staring out at the rain-soaked street, her thoughts swirling like the storm clouds overhead. Noah had sworn to her that he was done with the criminal organization — that he was trying to make things right for her and for Lily. But the more Piper thought about it, the more she realized that even if Noah’s intentions were good, his past was still a danger.

Lily needs to be safe.

Her heart clenched at the thought of her daughter getting caught in the crossfire of Noah’s mistakes. She couldn’t afford to take chances — not when it came to her child.

But what did that mean for Noah? Could she really cut him out of Lily’s life entirely? Or was there still a way to protect her daughter while giving Noah the chance to prove himself?

The questions weighed heavily on her, and no matter how hard she tried to find an answer, she kept coming back to the same conclusion: She couldn’t trust Noah — not yet. Maybe not ever.

Later that evening, Piper sat on the edge of Lily’s bed, watching her daughter as she slept peacefully. The soft glow of the nightlight bathed the room in a warm, comforting light, and for a moment, Piper allowed herself to breathe. She stroked Lily’s hair gently, her heart aching with love and protectiveness.

How could she ever explain to her daughter the mess of emotions swirling inside her? How could she make Lily understand that the man who had once been her father — the man who had held her in his arms and whispered promises of love — was the same man who had brought danger into their lives?

Piper had always promised herself that she would do whatever it took to protect Lily. And now, with Noah’s past still lingering like a dark shadow, that promise had never felt more important.

As she kissed Lily’s forehead and stood to leave the room, her phone buzzed again. This time, it was a text message — from Noah.

Noah: Piper, I know I’ve hurt you, but I swear I’m not involved with them anymore. Please, give me a chance to prove it. I just want to see Lily. She needs her father.

Piper’s chest tightened. The words felt like a punch to the gut — desperate, pleading, and filled with the weight of all the promises Noah had broken. She wanted to believe him, wanted to believe that he had truly changed, but after everything that had happened, trust wasn’t something she could offer freely anymore.

She didn’t respond to the message, instead setting the phone down on her nightstand and curling up under the blankets. The exhaustion weighed heavily on her, but sleep didn’t come easily. Every time she closed her eyes, the same questions haunted her.

What if Noah was telling the truth? What if he really had changed? Could she keep him away from Lily forever?

But then the doubts crept in — the doubts that reminded her of every lie, every danger Noah had brought into their lives. How could she risk trusting him again?

The next morning, Piper found herself standing outside Claire’s office. She hadn’t planned on coming here so soon, but after a sleepless night, she knew she needed guidance. She needed to know her options — for herself and for Lily.

Claire greeted her with a warm but serious expression as she ushered Piper inside.

“I didn’t expect to see you so soon,” Claire said, gesturing for Piper to sit down. “But I’m glad you came. I take it you’ve been thinking about our conversation?”

Piper nodded, her heart heavy. “I can’t keep going back and forth, Claire. I need to figure out what’s best for Lily. I don’t want to make any rash decisions, but I also can’t ignore the danger Noah’s past brings.”

Claire leaned forward, her expression thoughtful. “Have you thought about setting stricter boundaries with Noah? You don’t have to cut him out of Lily’s life entirely, but you can establish clear rules — supervised visits, limited contact — until you feel confident that he’s no longer a threat.”

Piper’s mind raced with possibilities. She had never considered a middle ground before. In her heart, it had always felt like an all-or-nothing situation — either Noah was in their lives, or he wasn’t. But maybe Claire was right. Maybe there was a way to protect Lily while still giving Noah a chance to prove himself.

“I just don’t know if I can trust him,” Piper admitted, her voice shaky. “And I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to.”

Claire gave her a sympathetic look. “Trust takes time, Piper. You don’t have to rush into anything. But if you do decide to give Noah a chance, do it on your terms. Set the boundaries, and make it clear that Lily’s safety comes first.”

Piper nodded, feeling a small glimmer of hope for the first time in days. Maybe there was a way to navigate this after all — without shutting Noah out completely, but without putting Lily in harm’s way either.

“Thanks, Claire,” Piper said, her voice steadying. “I needed to hear that.”

Claire smiled warmly. “You’re a good mother, Piper. I know you’ll make the right decision for Lily.”

As Piper left the office, she felt a strange sense of clarity settling over her.
