The house was eerily quiet after Gabriel and Jasper left, and Piper felt the weight of their departure in her chest like an anchor pulling her under. She was alone again, just as she had asked for, but the solitude brought no comfort — only confusion and heartache. She sat in the living room, her body sinking into the cushions as her thoughts spun wildly.
What was she supposed to do now? Every moment with Gabriel had been intense, his presence both a comfort and a complication, a constant reminder of the danger surrounding them. And yet, the way Jasper looked at her — the regret in his eyes, the promises of a past they had both left behind — was something she couldn’t shake. She had once loved him so deeply, and some part of her still did.
But how could she choose between two men who had each, in their own way, become integral to her life?
Piper stared out the window at the fading afternoon light, watching as the shadows lengthened. The sky was a mix of soft pinks and deep purples, but instead of calming her, it only made her feel more restless. There was no peace to be found here, no easy answers to the turmoil in her heart.
With Victor in police custody, the immediate threat seemed to have lifted, yet Piper couldn’t shake the feeling that this reprieve was only temporary. Gabriel had made it clear that Victor wasn’t the only one with a vendetta. There were still forces at play — people connected to Gabriel’s past who wouldn’t stop until they had their revenge. And that put her, and Lily, squarely in the crosshairs.
The very thought of it made Piper’s skin crawl. She wasn’t willing to take any chances when it came to her daughter’s safety. And as much as she had tried to distance herself from Gabriel emotionally, she couldn’t deny that he was the one who had been there, time and again, when danger had come knocking.
But Jasper had been there, too. Even though his presence had been steadier, more constant, it had also been tinged with guilt and unspoken apologies. Could she go back to him, knowing that they had been living in a fractured reality for so long? Or was that part of her life over, just another chapter she had yet to close?
Piper’s phone buzzed on the coffee table, pulling her out of her spiraling thoughts. She glanced at the screen and saw a message from Gabriel.
Gabriel: I’m heading back. We need to talk about what happens next. There are still people out there who want us all dead.
Her stomach flipped, a familiar mixture of fear and urgency settling into her bones. She had hoped that after Victor’s capture, they’d have some time to breathe, but it seemed like danger was still lurking just around the corner.
Piper stood and faced the living room, her mind racing. She couldn’t keep living like this, constantly waiting for the next attack, the next crisis. But the question remained: How much longer could she deny what was happening between her and Gabriel? How long could she ignore the undeniable connection pulling her toward him, despite the risks, despite her tangled emotions?
Just as she was about to respond to Gabriel’s message, the doorbell rang, startling her from her thoughts. Her heart leaped into her throat. She hadn’t been expecting anyone. Her first instinct was to grab the kitchen knife she kept hidden in a drawer for emergencies, but when she cautiously peered through the peephole, her breath hitched.
It was Noah.
She hesitated for a moment, conflicted. She hadn’t seen Noah since the confrontation with Victor, and things had been tense between them for months. His attempts to redeem himself had fallen flat, but there had been moments — fleeting ones — where she saw the man he had once been. The man she had fallen in love with.
Piper took a deep breath and opened the door, her eyes narrowing as she studied him. “Noah. What are you doing here?”
Noah stood on the porch, looking weary and disheveled, his eyes shadowed with exhaustion. “I know I shouldn’t have just shown up,” he said, his voice rough. “But I needed to see you. I needed to explain.”
Piper crossed her arms, trying to keep her emotions in check. “Explain what? Everything’s already been said, Noah. You put Lily in danger. You put us all in danger.”
Noah’s expression tightened with guilt, and he took a step closer. “I know, Piper. I know I messed up. But you have to understand — I never wanted any of this to happen. I never wanted to hurt you or Lily.”
Piper felt the familiar stirrings of anger and frustration rise in her chest, but there was also something else — something that made her hesitate. She had heard Noah’s apologies before, and every time, they felt sincere. But sincerity wasn’t enough anymore. Trust had been broken, and it wasn’t easily repaired.
“I don’t know if I can trust you again,” Piper said, her voice trembling slightly. “How do I know this isn’t just another empty promise?”
Noah’s face crumpled with emotion, and for the first time, Piper saw real vulnerability in his eyes. “Because I’ve lost everything, Piper. I’ve lost you. I’ve lost Lily. And it’s my fault.” He ran a hand through his hair, his voice breaking. “But I can’t walk away from you. I can’t walk away from her. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but I’m begging you to give me another chance.”
Piper’s chest tightened as she listened to him. There was a part of her — small, but still there — that wanted to believe him, that wanted to hope that he could be the man he used to be. But another part of her — the part that had been hurt and betrayed — wasn’t so easily convinced.
Before she could respond, her phone buzzed again. She glanced down and saw another message from Gabriel.
Gabriel: I’m outside. We need to talk. Now.
Piper’s heart skipped a beat. She was torn between the man standing in front of her, pleading for forgiveness, and the man who had risked everything to protect her and Lily.
“I can’t do this right now, Noah,” she said, her voice shaking. “There’s too much happening. I need time to think.”
Noah’s eyes searched hers, a flicker of hope dimming. He nodded slowly, stepping back. “I understand. But I’m not giving up, Piper. Not on you. Not in our family.”
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Piper standing in the doorway, her emotions in turmoil.
As soon as Noah disappeared down the street, Gabriel’s car pulled up in front of the house. Piper’s heart raced as she watched him get out and approach the porch. He looked exhausted, his face etched with worry and determination.
“Gabriel,” Piper said, her voice tight as he reached the door. “What’s going on?”
Gabriel’s eyes were intense as they locked onto hers. “We have a problem. Victor’s associates — they’re regrouping. They’re coming after us, Piper. And they’re not going to stop until we’re all dead.”
Piper’s stomach dropped, fear washing over her. She had known that Victor wasn’t the end of this nightmare, but hearing Gabriel say it out loud made it real. Too real.
“Lily,” Piper whispered, her voice breaking. “What do we do?”
Gabriel’s expression softened as he stepped closer, his hand gently brushing her arm. “We protect her. We protect you. I’m not letting anything happen to either of you.”
Piper felt her heart flutter at his touch, a warmth spreading through her despite the fear gnawing at her insides. She had tried to distance herself from Gabriel, but the truth was, she couldn’t deny the pull between them. He was her protector, her anchor in the storm. But he was also tied to the very world that had brought so much danger into her life.
“I don’t know if I can keep doing this,” Piper admitted, her voice trembling. “I don’t know if I can keep living in fear.”
Gabriel’s eyes darkened, his hand lingering on her arm. “You won’t have to do it alone, Piper. I’m here. Always.”
Piper swallowed hard, her emotions swirling. She knew Gabriel meant every word, but she also knew that staying close to him meant staying close to the danger. And after everything she had been through, she wasn’t sure if her heart could handle that.
“I just need time,” Piper whispered, her voice barely audible.
Gabriel nodded, his gaze softening as he stepped back. “I’ll give you all the time you need, Piper. But I’m not going anywhere. Not until this is over.”
As Gabriel walked away, leaving her standing alone on the porch, Piper felt the weight of her decision pressing down on her. She had to choose — between Gabriel, Jasper, and Noah — but more than that, she had to choose what kind of life she wanted for herself and Lily.
The problem was, she didn’t know if there was any safe choice left.
