The Lies That Binds

The Ghost from the Past

Ch. 141 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper stood in the quiet aftermath of Victor’s defeat, the gun still trembling in her hands. The echo of the shot faded into the night, leaving behind an eerie silence that buzzed in her ears. Victor lay motionless on the ground, Jasper still beneath him, breathing heavily. Gabriel was beside her in an instant, pulling her into his arms as he whispered, “It’s over.”

But as she stood there, wrapped in Gabriel’s embrace, Piper couldn’t shake the hollow feeling in her chest. Was it really over? The battle with Victor had left her emotionally drained, and though the immediate threat had been neutralized, she knew in her gut that the storm wasn’t over. The darkness clung to the edges of her mind, a nagging sense that something else was coming.

Jasper pushed Victor’s body off of him and stood, his eyes locked on Piper. His gaze was filled with a mixture of relief and concern, and Piper could see the pain of everything they had been through etched into his features. But there was something else in his eyes, too — something that told her their story wasn’t finished yet.

Piper stepped out of Gabriel’s arms and walked toward Jasper, her heart heavy. She had pulled the trigger. She had ended Victor’s reign of terror. But at what cost? Her hands still shook, the reality of what she had done settling deep into her bones.

“I couldn’t let him hurt you,” she whispered, her voice breaking as she stared at Jasper.

Jasper’s expression softened, and he reached out, gently touching her arm. “You did what you had to do,” he said quietly. “Victor was never going to stop.”

Gabriel was still behind her, his presence strong and protective, but Piper could feel the weight of his guilt pressing down on her. She had been pulled into this nightmare because of him — because of his past. And though Gabriel had risked everything to protect her, she could sense that his guilt over what she had been forced to endure was eating away at him.

“I’m sorry,” Gabriel said, his voice barely a whisper.

Piper turned to face him, her heart aching at the sight of the remorse in his eyes. She had seen that look before — every time he had tried to shield her from his past, every time he had kept secrets, thinking it was for her own good. But this time was different. This time, there were no more secrets.

Before she could respond, Jasper stepped closer. “We should get out of here,” he said, his voice firm. “Victor may be dead, but we don’t know if he had anyone else working with him.”

Gabriel nodded, his face hardening. “I’ll call it in. But we need to move. Now.”

The urgency in their voices snapped Piper out of her daze. She nodded, following them as they quickly made their way back to the cars. The drive back to her house was tense, the air thick with the unspoken weight of what had just happened.

Once they arrived at the house, Piper felt an overwhelming need to be alone — to process everything that had unfolded. She told Jasper and Gabriel she needed some time, and they reluctantly agreed, promising to keep watch from nearby.

As the door clicked shut behind her, Piper sank onto the couch, burying her face in her hands. The events of the night replayed in her mind, the adrenaline finally wearing off, leaving her exhausted and emotionally raw. She had fought for her life, for Lily’s safety, and now... now what?

Just as she began to feel a sliver of peace settle over her, the phone rang.

Her heart leaped, the sharp sound breaking the fragile quiet. She reached for the phone with shaky hands, expecting it to be Gabriel or Jasper checking in. But when she glanced at the screen, a name she hadn’t seen in years flashed across the screen.

Dante.

Piper’s breath caught in her throat. Gabriel had mentioned him once before—a figure from his past, someone deeply involved in the criminal network Gabriel had tried to dismantle. Gabriel had believed Dante was dead, killed during a confrontation years ago. But now, seeing his name on her phone, Piper’s blood turned to ice.

She hesitated for a heartbeat before answering, her voice unsteady. “Hello?”

A low, familiar chuckle came through the line, sending a chill down her spine. “Piper. Long time, no see.”

Her heart pounded in her chest as she clutched the phone tighter. “Dante,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “You’re supposed to be dead.”

“Funny how things work out, isn’t it?” Dante’s voice was smooth, almost amused. “But I’m very much alive, and it seems I’ve been forgotten.”

Piper’s throat went dry. Gabriel had never told her much about Dante, but she knew enough to understand that he was dangerous — far more dangerous than Victor had been. He had been one of the masterminds behind the criminal organization Gabriel had worked to take down. And now he was back, alive and clearly looking for revenge.

“What do you want?” Piper asked, her voice barely steady.

Dante’s chuckle darkened. “Oh, Piper. This isn’t about what I want. It’s about what Gabriel took from me. He thought he could wipe me off the map, destroy everything I built. But I’m not done with him. And now, neither are you.”

A cold dread settled over Piper as the implications of Dante’s words sank in. This wasn’t just about Gabriel anymore. It was about her, too. She had been dragged into Gabriel’s world, and now Dante was threatening to rip everything apart again.

“You stay away from me,” Piper said, her voice stronger now, her fear giving way to anger.

But Dante only laughed. “Oh, Piper. I don’t need to come to you. You’ll come to me. Sooner or later.”

The line went dead, and Piper stood frozen, her hand trembling as she lowered the phone. The sense of relief she had felt earlier, the hope that Victor’s death had brought an end to the chaos, evaporated in an instant. Dante was alive. And if he was anything like Gabriel had described, he was far more dangerous than Victor had ever been.

Piper’s mind raced as she tried to process what had just happened. She needed to tell Gabriel. He had to know. But as she reached for her phone again, a wave of hesitation washed over her. Gabriel had already been through so much — he had been trying to protect her, to make amends for his past mistakes. This news would crush him.

But she couldn’t hide it. Not from him. Not when Dante was back and coming after them.

With a deep breath, Piper dialed Gabriel’s number, her pulse racing as she waited for him to pick up.

“Piper?” Gabriel’s voice came through the line, tense with concern. “What’s wrong?”

She hesitated for only a moment before speaking. “Gabriel... It's Dante. He’s alive.”

The silence on the other end was deafening, and Piper could almost hear the breath leaving Gabriel’s lungs.

“No,” Gabriel whispered, his voice barely audible. “That’s not possible. He’s dead. I saw —”

“He called me,” Piper interrupted, her voice tight with fear. “He’s alive, Gabriel. And he’s coming for us.”

There was a long pause before Gabriel finally spoke again, his voice filled with a dark resolve. “I’m coming to you now. Don’t go anywhere.”

Piper hung up the phone, her heart pounding as she stared at the empty room around her. The walls seemed to close in, the weight of the threat pressing down on her chest. She had thought she could finally start to rebuild her life, that the danger had passed. But Dante’s return had shattered that fragile hope.

She wasn’t just fighting for her life anymore — she was fighting for everything Gabriel had tried to rebuild. And this time, the stakes were higher than ever.

As Piper waited for Gabriel to arrive, a storm of emotions swirled inside her. Fear, anger, and something else — something she couldn’t quite name. She had been through hell, and now it seemed that hell wasn’t finished with her yet.

Dante was back. And the nightmare was far from over.
