Jasper sat alone in his small apartment, staring at the cold cup of coffee in front of him. The apartment had always felt temporary, a place to crash after leaving the home he once shared with Piper and Lily. But now, it felt emptier than ever. The echoes of his past mistakes filled the room, and no matter how hard he tried to shake them, they lingered, suffocating him.
He leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his hair. His mind kept replaying the confrontation in the café — Gabriel standing there, calm and steady, while he had tried to convince Piper that they still had a future together. But even as he spoke, he had seen the doubt in her eyes, the hesitation in her voice. It was clear that Piper wasn’t ready, that she needed time to figure things out, but it didn’t make the rejection sting any less.
Seeing Gabriel back in Piper’s life, even if it was only on a professional level, had reignited something in Jasper — something he had tried to bury for months. Jealousy, regret, and, most of all, a deep sense of loss. He had lost Piper once already, and the thought of losing her to Gabriel made him feel like he was spiraling all over again.
Jasper stood abruptly, pacing the length of his living room as his thoughts raced. How had he let it come to this? How had he allowed Isabel to manipulate him, to pull him away from the one person who had truly mattered? It wasn’t just Gabriel that bothered him — it was the realization that he had been the one to sabotage his relationship with Piper. He had let his own insecurities, his own mistakes, drive them apart.
He stopped in front of the window, looking out at the city below. The streets were bustling with life, people going about their day as if nothing had changed. But for Jasper, everything had changed. The life he had once envisioned with Piper and Lily was slipping further and further away, and he wasn’t sure if he would ever be able to get it back.
A few hours later, Jasper found himself standing outside the building where Isabel lived. He hadn’t planned on coming here — hadn’t planned on seeing her at all, really — but something inside him had driven him to her door. Maybe it was the need for closure. Or maybe it was the desire to confront the mistakes he had made, to finally put the past behind him.
When Isabel opened the door, she looked surprised but quickly recovered, a sly smile curving her lips.
“Jasper,” she said, leaning against the doorframe. “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“I didn’t plan on coming,” he replied, his voice cool. “But we need to talk.”
Isabel raised an eyebrow, her smile never faltering. “Is that so? Well, come in. Let’s talk.”
Jasper hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. Isabel’s apartment was as sleek and polished as ever, a reflection of her personality — everything in its place, no room for chaos or emotion. It had always made Jasper feel a little uneasy, but at the time, he hadn’t questioned it. Now, as he stood in her perfectly arranged living room, he felt the weight of his own mistakes pressing down on him.
Isabel moved gracefully to the couch, sitting down and crossing her legs. She gestured for him to sit as well, but Jasper remained standing, his arms crossed over his chest.
“You’re not here for small talk, are you?” Isabel said, her tone light but with an edge of curiosity.
“No,” Jasper replied, his voice firm. “I’m here because I need to make something clear.”
Isabel’s smile faded slightly, and she leaned back against the couch, her eyes narrowing. “Go on.”
Jasper took a deep breath, steadying himself. “I made a lot of mistakes, Isabel. One of the biggest was letting you manipulate me into pushing Piper away. I let you get inside my head, make me doubt everything I had with her. And I can’t take that back.”
Isabel’s expression remained neutral, but Jasper could see the flicker of something — annoyance, maybe — behind her eyes.
“I didn’t manipulate you, Jasper,” she said smoothly. “You were the one who came to me. You were the one who made the choices that led us here.”
Jasper clenched his jaw. “You’re right. I did make those choices. But I was wrong. I was wrong to let myself get pulled into something with you when my heart wasn’t in it. My heart has always belonged to Piper and I should have fought for her. I should have fought for us.”
Isabel’s lips thinned into a tight line. “And what? You’re here to tell me that it’s over between us? That you’re running back to Piper like some lovesick fool?”
He didn’t flinch at her sharp tone. He had expected this reaction. “It was over long before now, Isabel. I just didn’t have the guts to admit it until recently.”
She stood, her eyes flashing with anger as she stepped toward him. “You think you can just walk away? After everything we’ve been through?”
Jasper met her gaze, his expression unwavering. “We haven’t been through anything, Isabel. You and I... it was never real. It was a mistake. I should have seen that sooner, but I didn’t.”
Isabel let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head. “And now you’re going to crawl back to Piper, thinking she’ll take you back? You think she’s just sitting there waiting for you after everything you’ve put her through?”
“I don’t know if she’ll take me back,” Jasper admitted, his voice steady. “But I’m not going to stop fighting for her. Not because I think I deserve it, but because I love her. And I’m willing to put in the work to prove that.”
Isabel’s eyes narrowed, and for a moment, Jasper thought she might lash out, but then something in her expression shifted. Her anger seemed to cool, replaced by something else — resignation, maybe. She let out a long breath, her shoulders sagging slightly.
“You’re a fool, Jasper,” she said, her voice quieter now. “But I suppose I always knew that.”
Jasper didn’t respond. There was nothing left to say. He had made his decision, and for the first time in months, he felt like he was finally moving in the right direction.
Isabel walked toward the door, opening it and gesturing for him to leave. “Good luck, Jasper. You’re going to need it.”
Jasper nodded once, stepping out into the hallway. As the door closed behind him, he felt a strange sense of relief wash over him. It was done. Whatever he had with Isabel — whatever twisted connection had existed between them — it was over.
But as he made his way back to his car, the relief was quickly replaced by something else: uncertainty.
What now?
He had made his intentions clear, both to Isabel and to himself. He wanted Piper back. He wanted to rebuild what they had lost, even if it meant starting from scratch. But would Piper even want that? Could she forgive him after everything he had put her through?
Jasper sighed, running a hand through his hair as he unlocked his car. The truth was, he didn’t know. Piper had been distant, guarded, and understandably so. But if there was even a sliver of hope that they could find their way back to each other, he was willing to fight for it.
Over the next few days, Jasper threw himself into his work, trying to keep his mind occupied while he figured out his next move. He didn’t want to overwhelm Piper, didn’t want to push her into anything she wasn’t ready for. But he also couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.
He spent hours replaying their last conversation in his mind, trying to pick apart every word, every glance, searching for any sign that Piper might still have feelings for him. It was exhausting, but he couldn’t stop himself. The more he thought about it, the more he realized how deeply he had hurt her — how much damage his indecision, his mistakes, had caused.
One evening, as he sat at his desk, staring at the stack of paperwork he had been avoiding, his phone buzzed on the table beside him. He glanced at the screen, his heart skipping a beat when he saw Piper’s name.
Piper: Can we talk?
Jasper’s breath caught in his throat. It wasn’t much — just a simple text — but it was enough to stir hope in his chest.
He quickly typed out a response, his hands trembling slightly as he hit send.
Me: Of course. When and where?
A few minutes later, Piper’s reply came through.
Piper: Tomorrow. The café. After closing.
Jasper stared at the screen for a long moment, a mixture of excitement and anxiety swirling in his chest. This was it. The moment he had been waiting for. The moment that could change everything.
But as the weight of the situation settled over him, Jasper couldn’t help but wonder — was he ready? Could he face Piper, knowing everything that had happened between them? Knowing the mistakes he had made, the hurt he had caused?
He didn’t have an answer. But one thing was certain: he couldn’t back down now.
