The Lies That Binds

Turning Points

Ch. 138 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The sound of tires on gravel reverberated through the night, setting off alarms in Piper’s mind. Her heart leapt into her throat as she and Jasper exchanged a quick glance, both instantly alert. There was no question of who it might be — Victor had found them.

Jasper stood first, his body coiled with tension, his hand instinctively reaching for the gun he’d kept concealed at his waist. He had always been prepared for a situation like this, but the fear etched on his face was undeniable. Piper followed him to the window, her pulse racing as she peeked through the curtains, praying it wasn’t Victor.

A sleek black car had pulled up just beyond the cabin, its headlights cutting through the darkness like a blade. But instead of Victor stepping out of the car, it was Gabriel — bloodied, bruised, and stumbling toward them, with a haunted look on his face. Relief surged through Piper, but it was short-lived. Something was terribly wrong.

Without waiting, she threw open the door and ran to Gabriel. “What happened? Are you okay?”

Gabriel collapsed against the doorframe, gripping his side in pain. His clothes were stained with blood, though it didn’t seem to be his. His face was pale, his breathing labored, and yet his eyes locked onto Piper’s with an intensity that sent a chill down her spine.

“I’m fine,” he gasped. “But we need to move. Now.”

Jasper stepped forward, pulling Gabriel inside before closing and locking the door. “What happened back there?”

Gabriel grimaced, leaning against the wall as he caught his breath. “Victor isn’t done. He’s more dangerous than we thought. I tried to stop him, but he’s got more men coming. This place isn’t safe anymore.”

Piper felt her knees weaken at Gabriel’s words. She had known Victor was relentless, but the realization that they were still very much in danger hit her like a ton of bricks. After everything they had gone through, the nightmare wasn’t over.

“We can’t stay here,” Gabriel said, looking at Jasper. “You have a backup plan, right?”

Jasper nodded grimly. “There’s another safe house, about thirty miles from here. We can head there, but we need to leave now.”

The sense of urgency in Jasper’s voice shook Piper from her daze. “We’ll get our things,” she said quickly, turning toward the bedroom.

As Piper rushed to pack a bag for Lily and herself, her mind raced. She had been so desperate to find a way out of this, to leave the chaos and danger behind. But now, with Victor still hunting them and Gabriel barely standing, the reality of their situation was inescapable. The confrontation with Victor wasn’t over — it was only escalating.

When Piper returned to the living room, Jasper had helped Gabriel into a chair, and the two men were speaking in hushed tones. Gabriel looked worse than she had realized, the adrenaline from the fight wearing off, leaving him pale and weak.

“Are you sure you’re okay to move?” Piper asked, her concern for him overriding everything else.

Gabriel nodded, though it was clear he was in pain. “I’ll be fine. We don’t have a choice. Victor’s men will be here soon.”

As they prepared to leave, the weight of everything that had happened crashed down on Piper. She couldn’t help but think about the emotional toll this was all taking. Her relationships with Gabriel and Jasper were already complicated, and now, with their lives in constant danger, those complications seemed insurmountable.

Once they were in the car, speeding down the back roads toward the new safe house, the tension between them was palpable. Jasper drove in silence, his hands gripping the wheel tightly, while Gabriel sat in the back seat, his breathing shallow as he fought off the pain.

Piper sat in the front, her thoughts spinning in a hundred different directions. She glanced at Jasper, then at Gabriel in the rearview mirror. Both men had risked everything for her, both had become entangled in her life in ways she hadn’t expected, and both were still very much a part of the storm that surrounded her.

But as much as she cared for them — loved them — Piper knew that things couldn’t stay the way they were. She couldn’t continue to live in limbo, torn between two men while trying to navigate the danger that still threatened her and Lily.

Victor wasn’t the only enemy she had to confront. Her heart had become its own battlefield, and sooner or later, she would have to choose a side.

Hours later, they arrived at the new safe house. This one was a bit more remote, tucked away in a dense forest, with only a narrow dirt road leading to it. It was larger than the cabin they had left behind, with more room to move and, more importantly, better security.

As soon as they were inside, Gabriel collapsed onto the couch, wincing as he clutched his side. Piper rushed to his side, kneeling down to check his wound.

“I’m fine,” Gabriel said through gritted teeth, though his face told a different story.

“You’re not fine,” Piper snapped, her voice trembling. “You’ve been shot, haven’t you?”

Gabriel didn’t answer, but his silence was enough.

Jasper grabbed the first aid kit from the cabinet and handed it to Piper. “Let me help,” he said, kneeling beside her.

The tension between the two men was thick, but at that moment, there was no room for rivalry. Gabriel needed help, and both of them knew it. Together, they cleaned and bandaged Gabriel’s wound as best they could. The bullet had grazed him, but it had left a deep, painful cut that would take time to heal.

As they worked in silence, Piper’s thoughts drifted once again to the tangled mess of emotions she was feeling. Gabriel’s vulnerability in that moment — his willingness to risk his life for her — only made her feelings for him more complicated. And then there was Jasper, who had been a constant presence in her life, always there to protect her and Lily, even when things had spiraled out of control.

When the wound was bandaged and Gabriel had fallen into a fitful sleep, Piper stood up and turned to Jasper. The look in his eyes told her that he knew exactly what she was thinking, though neither of them spoke the words aloud.

“You need rest, too,” Jasper said, his voice soft but firm. “We’ll figure out our next move in the morning.”

Piper nodded, though sleep was the last thing on her mind. Her thoughts were too loud, too tangled. She knew she needed to confront her feelings for both men, but with Victor still out there, hunting them, it felt impossible to think clearly.

“I’ll stay up and keep watch,” Jasper added, sensing her unease.

Piper hesitated, her heart aching with the weight of everything unsaid between them. She wanted to tell Jasper how much she appreciated him, how much he had meant to her, but the words caught in her throat.

Instead, she whispered, “Thank you,” before retreating to the bedroom.

The night passed slowly, the weight of exhaustion pressing down on Piper even as she tossed and turned in bed. Every sound outside, every creak of the house, sent her heart racing, her mind flashing back to Victor’s threats.

She couldn’t live like this. She couldn’t keep running, hiding, and fearing for her life and Lily’s. But she also couldn’t ignore the pull of her emotions — her love for both Gabriel and Jasper, and the impossible decision she would eventually have to make.

As the first rays of dawn broke through the window, Piper rose from bed, her body heavy with the weariness of the night before. She found Jasper sitting at the kitchen table, his face drawn and tired, though his eyes lit up with concern when he saw her.

“How are you feeling?” he asked quietly.

Piper managed a weak smile. “Exhausted. But I’ll survive.”

Jasper nodded, though the tension between them remained. There was so much they needed to talk about, so much left unresolved, but before Piper could say anything more, the front door creaked open.

Gabriel stood in the doorway, his face pale but determined. His wound was still fresh, but his eyes were sharp, filled with a steely resolve.

“We need to talk,” Gabriel said, his voice firm. “There’s something I haven’t told you about Victor. Something you need to know.”

Piper’s heart sank, a cold dread settling in her chest. She had thought they knew everything about the danger they were facing, but Gabriel’s expression told her otherwise.

“What is it?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Gabriel’s gaze darkened, and when he spoke, his words sent a chill down her spine.

“Victor’s not just coming for me. He’s coming for all of us — and he’s not stopping until one of us is dead.”
