The Lies That Binds

The Calm Before the Storm

Ch. 135 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The moon hung low in the night sky as Piper stood on the front porch, her arms wrapped tightly around herself. The cool breeze kissed her skin, but it did little to soothe the chaos in her heart. After leaving Jasper and Gabriel in the living room, she had come outside to clear her head, but her thoughts were a jumbled mess. Every breath felt heavy with the weight of the choice she couldn’t seem to make, and the air carried a sense of anticipation — like the world was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

She had never imagined her life would come to this — a tangled web of love, danger, and betrayal, with no clear path forward. Two men, both claiming to love her, both determined to protect her, stood on either side of her heart, pulling her in different directions. And in the shadows, Victor lurked, a constant reminder of the threat that still hung over her life and Lily’s.

As she leaned against the porch railing, Piper closed her eyes and let out a long, shaky breath. She had always been the kind of person who wanted to believe that things would work out — that if she tried hard enough, she could keep everything from falling apart. But now, it felt like everything was slipping through her fingers, and she didn’t know how to stop it.

The creak of the front door startled her, and she opened her eyes to see Gabriel stepping out onto the porch. His expression was soft but tense, the moonlight casting shadows over his sharp features. He didn’t say anything at first, just stood there, watching her with that same quiet intensity that always seemed to pull her in, no matter how much she tried to resist it.

“Can I sit with you?” Gabriel asked, his voice low, almost hesitant.

Piper nodded silently, and he walked over, settling down beside her on the porch steps. For a moment, neither of them spoke. The silence between them was thick with all the things left unsaid, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. It was the kind of silence that felt charged with meaning, as though every breath carried the weight of their unspoken thoughts.

“I’m sorry,” Gabriel said after a while, his voice breaking the stillness. “I’ve made things harder for you, and I hate that. I never wanted to be the reason your life became so complicated.”

Piper turned her head to look at him, her heart twisting at the sincerity in his voice. She could see the guilt in his eyes, the way it weighed him down. Gabriel had always carried his burdens silently, but tonight, they seemed heavier than ever.

“You didn’t make it complicated, Gabriel,” Piper said softly. “It’s just… everything. Everything that’s happened, everything we’ve been through. I don’t know how to untangle it all.”

He nodded, his gaze dropping to the ground. “I understand. I don’t blame you for feeling torn. After everything I’ve done, I wouldn’t blame you if you walked away.”

Piper swallowed hard, her throat tightening. The idea of walking away from Gabriel, of cutting him out of her life, left her feeling hollow. But at the same time, she didn’t know if she could keep holding on to the pieces of something that felt so fragile, so breakable.

“Do you regret it?” she asked quietly. “Getting involved with me, knowing how much danger it would bring?”

Gabriel’s eyes snapped back to hers, filled with a fierce determination. “Never,” he said without hesitation. “Not for a second. You and Lily — you’re the reason I’m fighting so hard. You’re the reason I’m still standing.”

Piper’s heart ached at his words, torn between the depth of his devotion and the fear that came with it. She wanted to believe him, wanted to trust that he could keep them safe, but the truth was, she didn’t know how to fully trust anyone anymore. Not after everything she’d been through.

“I don’t know what to do, Gabriel,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “I feel like I’m being pulled in so many directions, and I’m scared. Scared of making the wrong choice. Scared of losing someone. Scared of what’s going to happen if I don’t figure this out.”

Gabriel shifted closer to her, his hand reaching out to gently take hers. His touch was warm, comforting, and for a moment, Piper let herself lean into it, finding a small sense of peace in the connection.

“You don’t have to decide right now,” Gabriel said softly. “I know this is hard. I know I’ve made it harder. But whatever happens, I’ll be here. I’ll keep fighting for you. For us.”

Piper’s chest tightened as she listened to him. She wanted to believe that things could be that simple — that love could be enough to fix the mess her life had become. But she wasn’t sure if love alone could keep her and Lily safe, or if it would be enough to heal the wounds that had been left by all the secrets and betrayals.

She pulled her hand away gently, needing space to think, to breathe. “I need time,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “I just… I need time to figure this out.”

Gabriel’s face fell slightly, but he nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. “I’ll give you all the time you need,” he said quietly. “Just know that I’m not going anywhere.”

Piper felt her heart twist as she stood up from the steps, feeling the weight of Gabriel’s gaze on her as she turned to go back inside. But before she could open the door, a familiar voice stopped her in her tracks.

“Piper.”

Jasper was standing in the doorway, his face a mixture of concern and frustration. He had heard everything.

Her heart dropped into her stomach as she realized just how tangled this situation had become. Gabriel on one side, Jasper on the other — both of them vying for her heart, both of them determined to protect her. And in the middle of it all was her, struggling to figure out where she truly belonged.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Jasper said, his voice tight. “But we need to talk.”

Piper’s stomach churned. This was too much. Too many emotions, too many decisions. She felt like she was being torn apart, and she didn’t know how to stop the spiral.

“Jasper…” she began, but he cut her off.

“No, Piper,” he said, stepping closer. “I’ve been quiet long enough. I’ve watched you get pulled in every direction, and I can’t just stand by anymore. I need to know where I stand. I need to know if there’s still a chance for us.”

Gabriel stood up from the porch steps, tension rolling off him in waves. “This isn’t the time, Jasper. You’re making this harder.”

“And you’re not?” Jasper shot back, his frustration boiling over. “You’ve dragged her into your world of danger and lies, and now you want to play the hero?”

Gabriel’s fists clenched, but he didn’t respond. The silence between them was thick with hostility, and Piper felt like she was on the verge of collapsing under the weight of their competing affections.

“I can’t do this right now,” Piper said, her voice shaky as she took a step back. “I need space. I need to think.”

Neither man said anything as she turned and walked back inside the house, her chest tight with anxiety. She could feel both their eyes on her as she retreated, but she didn’t turn back.

Once she was inside, she leaned against the door, trying to catch her breath. Her hands were trembling, and her heart was racing. How had her life come to this? How had everything spiraled so far out of control?

For the longest time, Piper stood there, staring at the floor, trying to block out the noise of her thoughts. She needed to calm down, to think clearly. But every time she tried, her mind would circle back to the same questions, the same doubts.

Was it Gabriel or Jasper?

Could she really choose between them when her heart was still so torn?

And could she even afford to be thinking about love and relationships when Victor was still out there, lurking like a shadow, ready to strike at any moment?
