The Lies That Binds

Setting the Trap

Ch. 140 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The cabin felt unnaturally quiet in the hours that followed Gabriel’s revelation. Piper paced the small living room, her mind racing as she replayed every word he had said. Victor wasn’t just after revenge — he wanted complete destruction, and Gabriel’s confession had made that terrifyingly clear. The thought of Victor coming after her, after Lily, with such violent resolve filled her with dread.

But there was no time for fear now. Piper knew that if they didn’t take action soon, the nightmare would only continue. She had spent too long running, hiding, trying to protect the people she loved while her world fell apart. This was her chance to end it.

Gabriel and Jasper were in the kitchen, talking in hushed tones, going over the details of their plan. It was a strange alliance — one born of necessity, not trust. Piper knew the tension between them still simmered beneath the surface. The rivalry, the unspoken competition for her affection, hadn’t disappeared. But now, they were united by something more urgent. Stopping Victor was their only priority.

As she listened to their quiet discussion, Piper felt a pang of guilt for being the center of their conflict. Both men had risked everything for her, and now they were both about to walk into a situation that could easily get them killed. But it was Gabriel’s face — pale, bruised, and still recovering — that haunted her the most. He was willing to be the bait, to put his life on the line for her, and though part of her wanted to scream and tell him not to do it, another part of her knew it was their only option.

Finally, Gabriel’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Piper,” he called softly. “Come here for a second.”

She turned toward the kitchen, steeling herself for the conversation she knew was coming. They had talked through the logistics of the trap, but now it was time to face the emotional weight of what they were about to do.

Gabriel was leaning against the counter, his body still tense with pain. Jasper stood nearby, arms crossed, his expression unreadable as he glanced between them.

“We need to talk about the plan,” Gabriel said, his eyes locking onto hers. “You’re going to have a role in this, and I need to make sure you’re ready.”

Piper swallowed hard, her hands trembling slightly as she stepped forward. “What do you need me to do?”

Gabriel exchanged a quick glance with Jasper before he spoke again. “Victor’s smart. He knows I wouldn’t go down without a fight, and if he sees you with me, he’ll assume I’m protecting you. He’ll be focused on you.”

Piper’s stomach tightened. “You want me to be the bait.”

Gabriel’s face darkened. “It’s not just that. We’ll make it look like you’re vulnerable, like you’re separated from the rest of us. Victor will want to come after you, thinking it’s his chance to hurt me by hurting you.”

“No,” Jasper interrupted, his voice cold and firm. “That’s too dangerous. Piper’s not getting caught in the crossfire of this. We’ll find another way to lure Victor out.”

Piper looked between them, her heart racing. She could feel the tension rising again, the clash of wills as Gabriel and Jasper silently battled for control of the situation. But she couldn’t let their rivalry cloud what needed to be done.

“If it’s the best way to catch Victor,” Piper said quietly, “then I’ll do it.”

Jasper’s jaw tightened, his fists clenched at his sides. “Piper, no. This isn’t just about luring Victor. It’s about keeping you and Lily safe. I’m not going to let you walk into a trap.”

Gabriel’s eyes softened as he looked at her. “It’s dangerous, yes. But with the right plan, we can control the situation. We’ll have backup, and I’ll be with you every step of the way.”

Piper nodded, though her heart pounded in her chest. She hated the idea of being used as bait, of putting herself in harm’s way, but the alternative—waiting, running, hiding — was no longer an option. If this was how they could finally stop Victor, she had to do it.

“We’ll be ready,” she said, her voice stronger than she felt. “Let’s just make sure we end this.”

Jasper’s frustration was evident in the way he ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. “If anything goes wrong —”

“It won’t,” Gabriel cut in. “We won’t let it.”

The tension between them simmered, but there was no time to argue. They had to move quickly, and every second they spent debating was another second closer to Victor finding them.

As they finalize the details of the plan, Piper couldn’t help but feel the weight of what was about to happen. This wasn’t just about setting a trap for Victor — it was about confronting the tangled mess of her relationships with Gabriel and Jasper. She had spent so long avoiding the truth of her feelings, of the choices she had been forced to make, but now there was no escape.

By the time they were ready to leave, the air between them was thick with unspoken words. Gabriel’s presence was steady, as it always had been, but there was a vulnerability in his eyes that Piper had rarely seen. Jasper, on the other hand, was quieter than usual, his protective instincts warring with the reality of the situation.

“We’ll take two cars,” Jasper said as they gathered their things. “I’ll stay close, but Gabriel and Piper will be out front, where Victor can see them.”

Piper nodded, her pulse quickening as the plan became real. This was it — the final move. If everything went according to plan, they would have Victor trapped. If not...

She pushed the thought from her mind. She couldn’t afford to think about what might go wrong. They had to succeed. They had to end this.

As they stepped outside, the cool night air washed over them, bringing with it a strange sense of calm before the storm. Piper glanced at Gabriel, her heart aching with everything she hadn’t said. She knew how much he had risked for her, how deeply he cared for her, but she couldn’t deny the complicated emotions that still swirled inside her. Jasper’s steady presence had been a lifeline, a reminder of the life she once had, while Gabriel was a force of change, pulling her into something new, something uncertain.

And now, as they prepared to face Victor, all of those feelings came crashing down on her.

Gabriel caught her gaze, his expression softening. “We’re going to be okay,” he said quietly. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Piper nodded, though her throat was tight with fear. “I trust you,” she whispered, though part of her wasn’t sure if she trusted him — or herself.

Jasper watched them from a few feet away, his eyes dark with concern. “Let’s get this over with,” he muttered, though his voice lacked the usual confidence she had come to expect from him.

The drive to the meeting spot felt interminable, the silence in the car punctuated only by the sound of the engine and the distant hum of the radio. Piper’s mind raced as she tried to focus on the task at hand, pushing aside the fear that gnawed at her.

Victor would be there, waiting, watching. And she had to be ready.

As they approached the deserted lot where the trap was to be set, Gabriel pulled the car to a stop. The headlights flickered in the darkness, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement. It was the perfect place for a confrontation — isolated, far from prying eyes, with nowhere to run.

“This is it,” Gabriel said, his voice steady as he glanced at her. “We stay calm, we stay focused. Victor will come to us.”

Piper nodded, her heart pounding. She had to be strong, for herself, for Lily, for everything she had fought for.

As they stepped out of the car, the weight of the moment settled over them. The air was thick with tension, the distant sounds of the city fading into the background as the silence closed in around them.

Piper stood beside Gabriel, her breath shallow as she scanned the lot for any sign of movement. Jasper’s car pulled up a short distance away, his figure barely visible as he kept a watchful eye on them. And then, from the shadows, a figure emerged.

Victor.

Piper’s heart stopped as she saw him, his dark silhouette cutting through the night. He moved slowly, deliberately, his gaze fixed on Gabriel with a cold, predatory intensity.

“It’s over, Victor,” Gabriel called, his voice echoing in the empty lot. “You’re not going to win.”

Victor’s lips curled into a slow, menacing smile. “You think this is over? You have no idea what’s coming, Gabriel.”

Piper’s pulse quickened as she felt Gabriel tense beside her. This was it — the moment they had been waiting for. The trap was set, and now it was up to them to spring it.

But as Victor took another step forward, his eyes flicked to Piper, and a shiver of fear ran down her spine.

“Let’s see how brave you are when she’s not there to save you,” Victor sneered.

Before Piper could react, Victor reached into his coat, pulling out a gun.

Everything happened in a blur. Gabriel moved in front of her, shielding her with his body as Victor raised the weapon, his finger on the trigger.

“Gabriel!” Piper screamed, her voice cracking with terror.

But before the shot could be fired, Jasper appeared out of the shadows, tackling Victor to the ground.

The struggle was violent, fast, and desperate. Piper stood frozen, her heart in her throat as she watched the two men grapple for control. Victor’s gun clattered to the pavement, and for a brief moment, Jasper had the upper hand.

But Victor wasn’t done yet.

With a sudden burst of strength, Victor flipped Jasper onto his back, pinning him down.

Piper’s breath caught in her throat. This was it. This was the moment. And in that split second, as Victor reached for the gun, Piper knew she had to act.

Without thinking, she grabbed the weapon that had fallen at her feet, raising it with shaking hands.

“Stop!” she cried, her voice breaking through the chaos.

Victor froze, his eyes locking onto hers with a mixture of shock and amusement.

“You won’t shoot me,” he said, his voice dripping with confidence.

But Piper’s hands didn’t falter. This time, she wasn’t running. This time, she wasn’t hiding.

With a steady hand and a heart full of resolve, she pulled the trigger.
