The Lies That Binds

Shadows of the Past

Ch. 100 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The sun was setting as Piper stood outside the café, watching the golden light stretch long shadows across the sidewalk. The repairs were moving forward slowly, but the café was far from its former self. Much like her life, it needed time to heal.

She let out a breath, the cool evening air soothing against her skin, but the heaviness in her chest remained. Despite the relative quiet in her world now, there was an emotional storm raging inside her. Every day brought new waves of confusion, guilt, and indecision, and no matter how much she tried to push it all away, it always came back. Her heart was divided — pulled in so many directions that she didn’t know how to move forward.

And then there was Gabriel.

She hadn’t seen him since he’d been discharged from the hospital. His injuries had been severe, and his recovery was slow, but that hadn’t stopped him from trying to reach her. He had called, left messages, even sent flowers to her doorstep, each gesture filled with apologies and reassurances. He was desperate to show her that his criminal past was truly behind him, that he had changed, that he was a man she could trust.

But trust wasn’t something Piper could offer so easily. Not anymore.

She had once believed in the people closest to her — trusted their words, their promises — only to be blindsided by betrayal. Noah’s lies had shattered the foundation of her world, and even though Gabriel had stepped in to help, his own secrets had come to light. Secrets that still haunted her.

A car engine rumbled to a stop nearby, pulling Piper from her thoughts. She turned to see Gabriel’s familiar dark sedan parked at the curb. Her heart clenched, a mix of relief and apprehension filling her as he stepped out of the car and walked toward her.

He looked better than the last time she’d seen him, but there was still a hint of fatigue in his features. The physical toll of his injuries was still evident, though his eyes were sharp, focused. There was something else in his expression — determination.

“Piper,” he greeted softly as he approached, his voice laced with hope and caution.

She managed a small smile, though the tension in her chest made it feel fragile. “Gabriel. I didn’t expect to see you here.”

He stopped a few feet away from her, his gaze searching her face for any sign of welcome, but Piper kept her emotions carefully guarded. He seemed to sense the distance between them, his shoulders tensing slightly.

“I needed to see you,” Gabriel said, his voice earnest. “I’ve been thinking about everything... about us. About what happened.”

Piper’s throat tightened. She had been thinking about it too — thinking about it far more than she wanted to admit.

Gabriel ran a hand through his hair, his frustration palpable. “I know I’ve said this before, but I need you to believe me when I tell you that my past is behind me. I never wanted to drag you into the mess with the criminal organization. I never wanted to keep secrets from you.”

Piper folded her arms, trying to keep her voice steady. “But you did, Gabriel. You kept those secrets, and it almost cost us everything.”

He flinched at her words, the pain clear in his eyes, but he didn’t back down. “I know. And I’m sorry. I thought I was protecting you — protecting us. But I was wrong. I should’ve trusted you enough to tell you the truth from the start.”

Piper looked away, the sting of his betrayal still fresh. She wanted to believe him — wanted to believe that he had done it all out of love and a desire to protect her — but the fear of being hurt again made her hesitate.

“Everything’s so complicated now,” she said quietly, more to herself than to him.

Gabriel took a step closer, his voice soft but filled with conviction. “It doesn’t have to be, Piper. I love you. I’ve loved you from the moment I met you, and that hasn’t changed. I would do anything to make things right between us.”

Her heart twisted at his words, her emotions pulling her in opposite directions. She loved Gabriel, too — there was no denying the deep bond they had formed. But love alone wasn’t enough. Trust was the foundation, and hers had been shaken.

“I don’t know if I can trust you again,” she admitted, her voice cracking.

Gabriel’s face fell, but he didn’t argue. He didn’t try to convince her otherwise. Instead, he simply nodded, the sadness in his eyes cutting through her like a blade.

“I understand,” he said quietly. “I know I have a lot to make up for, and I don’t expect you to just forgive me overnight. But I’m not giving up on us, Piper. I’m going to prove to you that I’ve changed. That I’m the man you deserve.”

Piper’s chest tightened, the weight of his words pressing down on her. She could feel the sincerity in his voice, the raw emotion behind every syllable, but the scars of the past still lingered.

Before she could respond, Gabriel took another step forward, closing the distance between them. His hand reached for hers, gently curling around her fingers, and Piper felt a surge of warmth spread through her at his touch. For a brief moment, it was just the two of them, standing on the sidewalk, the rest of the world falling away.

“I know I hurt you,” Gabriel whispered, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. “But I’m not that man anymore. I’m not the man who’s tied to a criminal past. I’m the man who would do anything to protect you. The man who would give up everything to be with you.”

Piper’s heart ached as she looked into his eyes, her mind swirling with conflicting emotions. She wanted to believe him — wanted to believe that he had truly left his past behind. But there was still a part of her, deep inside, that feared being vulnerable again. That feared opening herself up, only to be hurt once more.

“Gabriel,” she began, her voice trembling. “I don’t know how to do this.”

He gave her a small, understanding smile, his grip on her hand tightening just slightly. “You don’t have to figure it all out right now. Just take it one step at a time. I’m here. I’ll wait for you, no matter how long it takes.”

The sincerity in his words nearly broke her. She had been through so much — so much betrayal, so much loss — and yet here was Gabriel, willing to wait, willing to fight for her, even after everything they had been through.

But it wasn’t just about Gabriel. Jasper, too, was waiting in the wings. He had been a constant presence, quietly offering his support, never pushing her to make a decision. Piper’s heart had been divided between the two men for so long that she didn’t know how to untangle her feelings anymore.

She pulled her hand away from Gabriel’s, her chest tight. “I need more time.”

Gabriel nodded, though she could see the flicker of disappointment in his eyes. “I’ll give you all the time you need. Just know that I’m not going anywhere.”

With that, he turned and walked back to his car, leaving Piper standing alone on the sidewalk. She watched him drive away, her heart heavy with the weight of her indecision.

As much as she wanted to believe that love could heal everything, she wasn’t sure it was enough. Not when the past was still so fresh, the wounds still so deep. And the truth was, she wasn’t just questioning Gabriel. She was questioning herself — her own ability to trust, to love, to move forward after everything that had happened.
