The Lies That Binds

Rebuilding the Pieces

Ch. 99 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The clink of a hammer echoed through the café as Piper worked to fix the broken tables. The repairs were slow and tedious, but in a strange way, they were therapeutic. Focusing on the physical work helped drown out the whirlwind of thoughts constantly swirling in her head. The scent of sawdust and varnish filled the air, mingling with the faint memory of coffee that once defined the space. She had spent years turning this café into something special, and she was determined to bring it back to life, piece by piece.

But as the wood splintered under her hammer, Piper knew that rebuilding her business was only one part of the battle. Her life, her heart — they were still shattered, and she wasn’t sure if they could be put back together as easily.

Gabriel’s words still echoed in her mind. “I did it because I love you.”

She hadn’t been able to shake the memory of him lying in the hospital bed, pale and broken, yet still determined to protect her. His love had been unwavering, and his sacrifice undeniable. But the weight of that love was too much to bear. She had told him she needed time, and while he had respected her wishes, the guilt gnawed at her. Gabriel was recovering, but she hadn’t visited him again since that day at the hospital. Every time she thought about going, a knot of anxiety formed in her chest, and she found herself unable to face him.

The café’s front door creaked open, pulling her from her thoughts. Piper looked up to see Jasper stepping inside, his eyes scanning the room with quiet curiosity. He had been stopping by more often lately, helping with repairs and offering support in his own understated way. Their conversations had been brief, but the unspoken bond between them remained. They had been through so much together — so much pain, so much love — and yet, the distance between them seemed wider than ever.

“Thought you could use some help,” Jasper said, holding up a toolbox as he approached her.

Piper offered a small smile, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I could use all the help I can get.”

Jasper set the toolbox down and knelt beside her, examining the half-fixed table she had been working on. He grabbed a screwdriver and started tightening the bolts, his movements efficient and focused. For a few moments, they worked in silence, the sound of tools and wood filling the air between them.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said the other day,” Jasper finally spoke, his voice quiet but steady.

Piper glanced at him, her hands stilling for a moment. “What part?”

“About being scared. About not knowing if you can trust anyone again.” He paused, turning his gaze to meet hers. “I get it, Piper. I really do. I messed up in the past — I didn’t fight for us the way I should have. And I’ve been carrying that regret around for a long time.”

Piper swallowed, her heart tightening. She hadn’t expected him to bring it up, especially not now, when everything felt so fragile.

“I know you regret it,” she said softly. “But I don’t think I can go back to what we had. Too much has happened.”

Jasper’s expression was pained, but he nodded. “I’m not asking you to go back. I just want you to know that... I’m here. Whether or not we ever get back to what we had, I’ll always be here for you and for Lily.”

His words, though comforting, only deepened the ache in Piper’s chest. She knew Jasper meant every word, but her heart was still caught in the crossfire between him and Gabriel. She had spent so long relying on both of them in different ways, and now she wasn’t sure if she could separate her need for them from the chaos they had all been through.

“I don’t know how to move forward,” she admitted, her voice barely a whisper.

Jasper set the screwdriver down, his eyes softening. “One step at a time. You don’t have to have all the answers right now.”

Piper nodded, though the uncertainty still weighed heavily on her. She turned back to the table, picking up the hammer again, but her hands were unsteady. The noise of the repairs couldn’t drown out the emotions swirling inside her.

“Gabriel’s still recovering,” she said suddenly, surprising herself with the shift in conversation. “I haven’t seen him since... since the hospital.”

Jasper’s expression didn’t change, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes — something she couldn’t quite read. “Are you going to?”

Piper hesitated, her grip tightening on the hammer. “I don’t know. Part of me feels like I should. But every time I think about it, I...”

She trailed off, her thoughts tangling with guilt and confusion. Gabriel had risked his life for her. He had bared his heart to her, and she hadn’t been able to give him a clear answer. She cared for him deeply — loved him, even — but the thought of committing to any one person right now felt impossible.

Jasper nodded, his tone gentle. “You don’t owe him anything, Piper. He knows that.”

“I know,” she murmured, but the guilt still lingered. She couldn’t ignore how Gabriel had become a constant presence in her life, how he had been there for her through the darkest moments. And yet, she couldn’t forget Jasper, the man who had been her foundation before everything fell apart.

The door opened again, and this time, Piper’s heart sank. Noah stepped inside, his expression unreadable as he stood just inside the entrance, his gaze moving between Piper and Jasper. The tension in the room shifted, heavy and palpable.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Noah said, his voice low and cautious. “But I needed to talk to you, Piper.”

Jasper stood, his posture tense. He didn’t say anything, but the unspoken rivalry between him and Noah was clear in the way he held himself. Piper glanced between them, her mind spinning with uncertainty.

“What is it, Noah?” she asked, her voice guarded.

Noah’s eyes softened as they met hers. “I’ve been trying to figure out how to make things right,” he said. “I know I’ve hurt you, and I know I’ve lost your trust, but I want to help. I want to be there for Lily — and for you.”

Piper’s heart clenched. Noah had always been complicated — a mix of good intentions and bad choices. She had once loved him, had once believed in the future they were building together, but those feelings had been shattered by his lies and betrayal. Now, as he stood before her, offering some semblance of reconciliation, she wasn’t sure what to feel.

“You can’t just walk back into my life and expect things to go back to how they were,” she said quietly. “Too much has happened.”

Noah’s face fell, but he nodded. “I know. But I’m not asking for that. I just want to help. I owe you that much.”

Jasper crossed his arms, his gaze hard as he watched the exchange. “If you’re here to help, then help. But don’t make this about trying to win her back.”

The tension between the two men was thick, and Piper felt the weight of it pressing down on her. She didn’t have the energy for this — for the constant push and pull between the people in her life. She needed space, needed time to figure out what she wanted, and right now, she wasn’t sure if any of them could give her that.

“I appreciate the offer, Noah,” she said finally, her voice steady but tired. “But I need some space. I need to focus on rebuilding — my business, my life, everything.”

Noah looked like he wanted to argue, but he nodded, his jaw tight. “I understand.”

With a final glance at Jasper, Noah turned and left the café, the door closing behind him with a soft click. Piper let out a shaky breath, her heart heavy with the weight of everything that had been left unsaid.

Jasper moved closer, his voice soft. “You don’t have to deal with this alone, Piper.”

Piper met his gaze, the warmth in his eyes both comforting and painful. She knew Jasper was sincere — knew he wanted to be there for her, but the walls she had built around her heart were still too high, too strong.

“I just need some time,” she whispered, her voice breaking.

Jasper’s expression softened, and he nodded. “Take all the time you need. I’m not going anywhere.”

With that, he picked up his toolbox and quietly left, leaving Piper standing alone in the empty café.

The room felt impossibly quiet now, the silence echoing in her ears. Piper set the hammer down on the table, her hands trembling. The truth was, she didn’t know how much time she needed. She didn’t know if she could ever fully trust any of them again — Gabriel, Jasper or Noah.

All she knew was that she needed to find herself again, to rebuild the pieces of her life that had been shattered. And maybe, in time, she would find the answers she was looking for.
