The Lies That Binds

Heart of the Storm

Ch. 95 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The air outside the warehouse was thick with tension, the cool night wrapping around Piper as she stepped into the alley with Gabriel and Jasper at her side. The gunfight had rattled her nerves, and the lieutenant’s escape was a harsh reminder that the criminal network wasn’t done with them. But what weighed most heavily on her was the emotional storm raging inside her heart. Between the mounting danger and the tangled web of her feelings for both Gabriel and Jasper, Piper felt like she was being pulled in two different directions.

She stole a glance at Gabriel as they walked, his jaw clenched in determination. His unwavering support and protective nature had been her anchor in the chaos. Gabriel had stepped into her life at a time when everything was crumbling, offering her safety and understanding. But his dangerous ties to the criminal world, no matter how far in the past, still cast a shadow over everything.

Jasper, walking on her other side, was a different kind of comfort. He was familiar — her past, her once-upon-a-time love, and the father of her daughter. The years they had spent together still lingered between them, unresolved and raw. She could feel the weight of his words from earlier — “I just want to be with you.” And that connection was impossible to ignore.

But as much as she wanted to cling to the safety of the past, Piper couldn’t shake the growing bond she had with Gabriel. He had put his life on the line for her more times than she could count, and he was always there, always ready to protect her and Lily. Her mind was torn, but the urgency of the situation forced her to put her emotions on hold — for now.

As they reached the SUV parked at the edge of the alley, Gabriel stopped, glancing at his watch. His brow furrowed, and he looked up at them. “We don’t have long before they regroup. We need to get somewhere safe — somewhere they won’t expect us to be.”

Piper nodded, her pulse quickening as the gravity of the situation sank in. “What about Lily? Is she safe with my parents?”

Gabriel’s eyes softened, and he placed a reassuring hand on her arm. “She’s safe. Your parents are too far off the grid for anyone to track them. But we can’t go there. They’ll be watching us.”

Piper bit her lip, the thought of Lily tucked away at her parents’ house both comforting and painful. She hated being separated from her daughter, but she knew it was the safest place for her to be. And right now, the focus had to be on dismantling the criminal organization that threatened everything they had.

Jasper spoke up, his voice firm. “We need to take this fight to them. Waiting around for them to make a move isn’t an option.”

Gabriel nodded, though his expression remained grim. “Agreed. But we need to be smart about it. We don’t know how many of them are still operating, and we can’t take any unnecessary risks.”

Piper took a deep breath, her mind racing as she considered their options. They couldn’t hide forever. She wouldn’t let these criminals control her life any longer. They had to strike back, but it had to be carefully planned.

“Then we hit them where it hurts,” Piper said, surprising herself with the strength in her voice. “We find out who’s leading the organization now, and we take them down.”

Both men turned to her, their expressions serious. Gabriel studied her for a moment before nodding. “I have a few leads we can follow, but it’s going to get dangerous, Piper. More than anything we’ve dealt with so far.”

“I don’t care how dangerous it gets,” Piper replied, her voice steady. “This ends now.”

Jasper’s gaze flickered with something unreadable — pride, worry, maybe both. He reached out and gently squeezed her shoulder. “We’re with you.”

Piper’s heart swelled, and for a moment, the tension between them faded. It didn’t matter how complicated their emotions were right now. What mattered was that they were united in this fight.

“We’ll start by tracking the lieutenant who escaped,” Gabriel said, shifting back into tactical mode. “If we can catch him before he reports back to whoever’s running the operation, we can stop them from regrouping.”

Piper nodded, but before she could respond, a sharp ringing filled the air. Gabriel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. His eyes narrowed as he glanced at the screen, then he swore under his breath.

“What is it?” Jasper asked, his voice tense.

Gabriel’s expression darkened as he looked up at them. “It’s one of my contacts. There’s been movement — someone’s trying to clean up loose ends. They’ve already hit one of our safehouses. If we don’t move fast, they’ll find us too.”

Piper’s stomach twisted, and a fresh wave of fear surged through her. The clock was ticking, and the enemy was closing in. They had to act now, or everything would unravel.

“Let’s go,” Gabriel said, urgency thick in his voice as he motioned for them to get into the SUV.

They piled into the car, and Gabriel wasted no time starting the engine, the tires screeching as they sped away from the alley. The city blurred by as they raced toward their next destination, the tension in the air mounting with every passing second.

As they drove, Piper’s mind drifted back to Lily, to the life she had once known before all of this chaos. It felt so far away now, like a distant memory. She had built her business, her home, and her family with Jasper, believing that she could carve out a safe and happy life for her daughter. But that dream had been shattered when the criminal organization set its sights on them. Now, every choice she made was about survival, about protecting the people she loved from an unseen threat that lurked in the shadows.

“We’re almost there,” Gabriel said, pulling Piper from her thoughts. His eyes were focused on the road ahead, his jaw set in determination.

Piper glanced at Jasper, who sat in the passenger seat, his gaze fixed on the horizon. There was a quiet intensity in his expression, a strength that she had always admired. Despite everything that had come between them, he had never wavered when it came to protecting her and Lily.

And then there was Gabriel — strong, steadfast, and always putting her safety above his own. The connection between them had grown deeper than she had expected, and yet, she was still torn. Her feelings for both men were undeniable, but with everything happening so fast, she couldn’t afford to let her heart make the decision. Not now.

The SUV slowed as they approached the next safehouse — an old, abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town. Gabriel pulled into a hidden lot behind the building, turning off the engine as they surveyed the area. It was quiet. Too quiet.

“Something’s not right,” Gabriel muttered, his eyes scanning the area.

Jasper nodded in agreement, his hand already reaching for his gun. “Stay sharp.”

Piper’s heart raced as they stepped out of the vehicle, her senses on high alert. The air was thick with tension, and every shadow seemed to pulse with unseen danger.

They moved carefully, sticking to the cover of the surrounding trees as they approached the back entrance of the warehouse. Gabriel motioned for them to stop, holding up a hand as he listened intently. Piper’s breath caught in her throat as she waited, her grip tightening on the small weapon Jasper had given her earlier.

Then, without warning, the door to the warehouse burst open, and a figure lunged out — gun raised, eyes wild with desperation.

Jasper reacted instantly, firing off two quick shots. The man staggered, his gun falling from his hand as he collapsed to the ground.

Piper’s heart pounded as she stared at the fallen man, her mind spinning. This was it. The final pieces of the criminal network were falling into place, but she knew that this was just the beginning of the end. The real leader, the one pulling all the strings, was still out there.

They moved inside the warehouse, their footsteps echoing in the vast, empty space. The tension was suffocating as they searched the area, but it was clear that whoever had been here was gone. Gabriel knelt beside a stack of crates, his brow furrowing as he examined something.

“They left in a hurry,” he muttered, standing up and glancing at Jasper and Piper. “But they didn’t get everything. There’s still something here.”

“What do you mean?” Piper asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Gabriel turned to face her, his expression deadly serious. “I think we’ve found their next target. And it’s not just us. They’re going after your business, Piper. They’re planning to burn it all down.”

Piper’s blood ran cold, her heart sinking in her chest. They were going after everything she had left — her livelihood, her last piece of stability. The criminal network wasn’t just after her. They wanted to destroy every part of her life.

“We can’t let them do that,” she said, her voice trembling with resolve.

“We won’t,” Gabriel replied, his eyes dark with determination. “But we have to move fast.”
