The Lies That Binds

A Line in the Sand

Ch. 94 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

The warehouse was eerily quiet after the gunfire, leaving Piper alone in the dim, cavernous space. Her ears still rang from the echoes of bullets ricocheting off metal, and her pulse thudded in her chest. Her mind was racing, torn between fear and resolve, as she crouched behind the concrete barrier. She could still feel Jasper’s firm grip on her arm, his final words to her before he and Gabriel rushed after the fleeing lieutenant: “Stay here. We’ll handle this.”

But staying put wasn’t an option. The fear gnawing at her stomach wouldn’t allow it, and neither would the knowledge that the men hunting them wouldn’t stop until they had what they wanted. She couldn’t afford to sit idly by while Gabriel and Jasper put their lives on the line. Not anymore.

With shaky hands, she pulled out her phone and checked for updates. Nothing. The silence from outside made her chest tighten. She stood slowly, the adrenaline still coursing through her veins as she moved cautiously through the shadows of the warehouse. Every creak of metal, every small sound made her flinch. For a moment, she contemplated running after them — but she stopped herself. She knew how reckless that would be.

Just as she took another step forward, the faint sound of footsteps echoed from the far end of the warehouse. Piper froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She quickly crouched behind a stack of crates, trying to keep her breathing steady. She strained her ears, listening. It wasn’t Gabriel or Jasper — these footsteps were slower, more deliberate, like someone searching for something — or someone.

Piper’s stomach twisted with dread. She knew instinctively that whoever it was wasn’t on their side.

She glanced around, her eyes searching for something — anything — that could help her. Her eyes landed on an old, rusted wrench lying on the floor a few feet away. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing. Quietly, she crawled toward it, her pulse racing in her ears as the footsteps grew closer.

Just as her fingers closed around the cold metal of the wrench, a voice echoed through the warehouse, low and menacing.

“Come out, Piper. We know you’re here.”

Her blood ran cold, and she gripped the wrench tighter, her heart pounding in her chest. She didn’t recognize the voice, but it didn’t matter. The criminal organization had sent someone to find her. They weren’t going to let her or anyone else involved escape unscathed.

Taking a deep breath, she weighed her options. She could stay hidden and hope they didn’t find her — or she could fight. Her body trembled with fear, but deep down, she knew there was no choice. She had to survive. She had to fight for Lily, for herself, and for everything she had built.

The footsteps stopped just a few yards from her hiding spot.

“Don’t make this harder than it needs to be,” the voice said, taunting now, filled with twisted amusement. “We can end this quickly, or you can drag it out. Your call.”

Piper’s fingers tightened around the wrench as she peered around the edge of the crates. She saw him now — a tall, broad-shouldered man in a black coat, his gun drawn and ready. He was scanning the area, his eyes narrowed in focus.

This was it. She couldn’t wait any longer.

With a burst of adrenaline, Piper shot to her feet and lunged at the man, swinging the wrench with all the strength she could muster. The metal connected with his wrist, and he let out a grunt of pain, his gun falling to the ground with a clatter. He spun around, his face contorted with fury, and grabbed her by the shoulders, shoving her backward into the stack of crates.

Piper gasped as the wind was knocked from her lungs, but she didn’t stop fighting. She swung the wrench again, this time aiming for his ribs. He blocked the blow, but the impact was enough to make him stagger. Piper scrambled away from him, her heart racing as she tried to put distance between them.

“Not bad,” the man sneered, shaking off the pain. “But you’ll need more than that to survive this.”

Before he could make another move, the sound of a door slamming open cut through the tension. Both of them turned to see Gabriel and Jasper charging into the warehouse, guns raised.

“Step away from her,” Gabriel growled, his voice filled with deadly intent.

The man’s eyes flicked between them, his face twisting into a snarl. For a moment, he looked like he might make a run for it — but then, with a sharp grin, he raised his hands in mock surrender.

“Well, well, well,” the man said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Looks like you’ve got yourself quite the rescue party, Piper.”

Jasper’s eyes were cold as he took a step closer, his gun trained on the man’s chest. “Walk away now, and you might make it out of here alive.”

The man chuckled, but his amusement didn’t reach his eyes. “This isn’t over. You know that, right? You’re all marked.”

Before anyone could react, the man reached into his coat and threw something to the ground — a flashbang. The room exploded with light and sound, disorienting them all. Piper stumbled backward, her vision swimming and her ears ringing. She heard Gabriel shouting, felt Jasper grab her arm, but the world was a blur of chaos.

By the time the smoke cleared, the man was gone.

Gabriel cursed under his breath, his eyes scanning the warehouse. “He slipped out through the side entrance. We don’t have time to track him.”

Jasper still had his arm around Piper, steadying her as she regained her bearings. “Are you okay?” he asked, his voice tight with concern.

Piper nodded, though her hands were still trembling. “I’m fine. But... he said this isn’t over. They’re still coming for us.”

Gabriel’s expression was grim. “He’s right. They won’t stop until they’ve taken down everyone connected to Marcus’s network. We need to figure out our next move before they strike again.”

Piper’s heart raced as she looked between Gabriel and Jasper. Both men had risked everything to protect her, but the fight was far from over. She could feel it — the storm wasn’t done gathering strength. The worst was still ahead of them.

As they made their way out of the warehouse, Piper’s mind raced. She had come so close to being caught, to losing everything. But it wasn’t just the criminal network she was fighting anymore — it was the weight of her emotions, the tangled web of connections that had left her torn between Gabriel and Jasper.

Gabriel walked ahead, his shoulders tense with the weight of what had just happened. Piper could see the burden he carried — the need to protect her, to dismantle the criminal organization that had taken so much from them both. But there was something more, something deeper. Gabriel had become a constant presence in her life, always ready to sacrifice for her and Lily. And though she had tried to keep her distance, her heart had begun to trust him in ways she hadn’t expected.

But then there was Jasper. The man she had loved for so long, who had been by her side through the ups and downs of their shared history. He had come back into her life just when she thought they were done, and now, despite everything, her feelings for him hadn’t faded. The connection between them was undeniable, even if it had been buried under years of pain and distance.

Jasper slowed his pace until he was walking beside her, his eyes flickering with emotions he didn’t voice. They had both nearly lost each other so many times, and now, in the middle of this fight for survival, the truth of their bond seemed more important than ever.

“I’ve been thinking about what you said earlier,” Jasper murmured, his voice low enough that Gabriel wouldn’t hear. “About starting over.”

Piper’s chest tightened, her mind flashing back to their conversation days before. She had told him she wasn’t sure they could ever truly rebuild what they had lost. But standing here, with the threat looming over them, she realized how much she wanted to believe it was possible.

“We’ve been through a lot, Jasper,” Piper whispered, her voice shaky. “I don’t know if we can go back. But I don’t know if I’m ready to let you go either.”

Jasper’s expression softened, his hand brushing against hers. “I don’t want to go back, Piper. I just want to be with you.”

Her heart twisted at his words, but before she could respond, Gabriel turned to face them, his eyes dark with determination.

“We need to move fast,” Gabriel said, his voice filled with urgency. “The lieutenant will report back to whoever’s leading the organization now. They’ll regroup quickly. We don’t have much time before they come after us again.”
