I can practically feel the sands of time slipping through the cracks between my fingers. No matter how hard I tried to hold on the faster time flew by. Ami had more than enough reasons to hate me. I didn’t fault her for not wanting me in her life anymore. She thought I stopped talking to her because of stupid childish reasons, but she couldn’t be further from the truth.
My ascension to the throne was drawing near, nearer still with the war. The wolves claimed they were being attacked by rogues but little did they know that it’s been going on for years. It was a game of cat and mouse and my father, the King, was the cat. He enjoyed playing with them and experimenting on them. I shuttered as I pushed that thought from my mind.
My father hated the wolves with every fiber of his being. He was in no rush to end the bloodshed. If anything, he enjoyed it. His plan was to take care of them all with the war. To “bring them to heel” as he so often said. It didn’t matter how much I didn’t want the life I was born into or anything it came with.
My body had already begun to change when I entered High School. The idea of stepping up into my rightful place shouldn’t have been as scary as it was. Maybe it was my last bit of humanity holding on. I’ve known about this my whole life but it only became real the summer before my Freshman year. My father told me of the changes that I would go through. He explained the dangers of not having a source.
I knew what a source was. It was a person we chose to keep by our side for whenever we were hungry. My father told me I would need to pick someone who I could keep by my side forever. Instantly I thought of my best friend, but the next words out of his mouth wrecked me. He’d told me in case of my source’s death I would need to list two others that would take the place of the original source. The only thing, the only person that ran through my mind was Amia. As soon as my father left I had a full blown panic attack. I couldn’t choose her. I would never choose Amia. I wouldn’t give in to my selfish desires. I swore to myself three years ago and I’ve kept it every year since. Almost four years later I was ready for the throne. I was supposed to have one year left and instead it was cut down to two months. I thought I had a little more time to enjoy being a kid in this world, but I was wrong. I had to choose a source in two months or else…
I wasn’t the best at keeping secrets from her. The only thing I could do was push her away and that’s what I did. I kept her at arms reach. I wouldn’t talk to her but I kept an eye on her. I watched her and made sure no one bothered her at school. Ami made a girlfriend in high school and my guilt was eased knowing that she wasn’t alone. She was doing well or at least, it seemed as if she was.
Things changed when she started to date that pathetic excuse of a boyfriend. Dylan fuck-face was a piece of shit. I hated him from the very beginning. As soon as I saw him walking by her side I knew he was lower than the dirt beneath her feet. He would never be good enough for her, but if I were being honest with myself. No one ever would be.
Time made me selfish and yesterday I couldn’t help but touch her. I wanted to be near her. I wanted to talk to her like we used to. I hated the way Dick-face tried to isolate her and demanded all of her time. My instincts told me to kill him but I held back because of the way she smiled around him. I wished for nothing but her happiness. I let him live for her. That’s what kept him alive. That all ended the moment I saw him put his hands on her.
As soon as I saw the way he was with her yesterday I’d made my mind up instantly. I would kill him. I planned to stalk him home. I knew where he lived and I knew who he was. The son of the one of the pathetic alphas my father played with. I’ve never agreed with my father’s doings until I did when I found out who he was. I would stalk him home after school and I would bleed him dry just feet from his home, just minutes from help.
I couldn’t follow through with my plans because as soon as Ami stepped into his car after school my plans were ruined. His death would have to wait. I’ve never wanted to kill someone as badly as I did yesterday. As Amia walked toward the front of the school I think that might change. As my eyes swept across her bruised covered face and cut lip. Something snapped inside of me. I wanted to kill him even more today.
Her girlfriend Liz ran over to her and threw a jacket over her head. She wrapped her arm around her shoulders, threw her makeup back beneath her arm, and led her into the school. I followed close behind as they ran into the girls bathroom.
