The Alpha's Mistress

The Lake

Ch. 40 / 70 May 07, 2026

Amia

My heart ached in my chest and my footsteps grew heavier with each step I took away from him. Putting my feelings into words was never something I did. Keeping my emotions, my thoughts, my wants, Goddess, even my needs to myself is like second nature for me. I had done everything I could to avoid eye contact when I said goodbye to him. I was scared of what I might see in his gaze.

Why was it so damn hard walking away from him?

It shouldn’t be this difficult to leave.

I don’t want to think about how much I want to turn around and run back into him arms. I shake my head. Levi, I’m thinking about Levi. I have too much on my plate right now to be thinking about my oldest friend in this way. I shouldn’t be angry with myself for stopping him from touching me. If I stayed any longer I know he would have insisted on taking me to the Lake himself. I just needed to be alone right now. When I get to the bottom of the stairs the two people who greeted us yesterday are waiting for me. I hadn’t realized yesterday that the two of them were twins. Without Levi here, their heads are lifted and they are looking me in the eyes. One is a young woman and the other a young man.

“The young master insists we give you a ride,” the man said.

“That’s not necessary,” I said.

“The young master has given an order,” he said.

Oh-kay.

The twins open the door and I follow them out to the car. The man opens the door for me while the woman hops into the drivers seat. I get in and the door closes behind me. The car ride is silent. They don’t ask me where I need to go, they take me straight to the lake. The moment I step out of the car the door shuts the man gets into the car and they speed away.

I close my eyes as the suns rays dance across my skin, warming me. I didn’t have any plans. I just needed to put some space between Levi and I before I did something I couldn’t take back. I had a boyfriend for crying out loud. I shouldn’t be thinking or feeling the way I am.

When I open my eyes, I walk through the gate entrance. The lake is packed today but I like it this way. With so many people here, no one is going to pay attention to me. I walk through the forested area until the sparkling lake comes into view. I can already feel a tug at my lips. The calm waters looks so inviting and my legs take me toward the water, only stopping when I’m a few feet away.

It has been maybe five minutes since I stepped out of the car and I already feel my clothing sticking to my skin. I pull off my shirt and discard my shorts, dropping them to the floor. My bruises are visible now, but no one here will bother with me. I’m left in my underwear and sports bra. Heat surrounds my body and I dash into the lake.

I step into the water and shiver as my body is slowly covered in water. It starts rising to my waist the more I wander deeper. I dive in and the cold water engulfs me. I keep swimming until I need to go back up for air. I float on the lake and thoughts of Dylan fill my mind.

What am I going to do?

I don’t know how much time passes as I float on top of the water. I stare at the endless blue sky that’s lit up by the sun. Muffled voices and water fill my ears and I close my eyes. Thankful that I came here alone and don’t have to worry about conversing with anyone. Only when the sound of a motor continues to grow closer and closer do I open my eyes. The boat is close, way too close for comfort. Before I’m hit the boat comes to a stop and a head appears over the side. The sun over his head darkens his features.

“What do we have here?” A husky voice asked.

The voice is familiar but I can’t place it. I squint my eyes and the man’s features lighten as they focus. I gulp as recognition dawns on me. The man staring down at me is the same man from dinner. The same one that pissed Dylan off. Instinctively, I look back to the shore, my gaze scanning the faces for my boyfriend. When I don’t find him, my body relaxes and I turn back to the alpha. His black hair wasn’t swept back today, it was messy and fell where it wanted. His eyes were just as piercing as they had been the first time I saw him. There’s a look in them that makes me feel like I’ve been caught. It feels as if he’s looking right through me and I hate it.

“Alpha,” I greet respectfully as I drop my eyes. I flap my arms beneath the water to keep me afloat. He disappears and before I know what’s happening he’s hopping over the boat. I choke on water as he cannonballs into the Lake.

Waves rock me back and forth making it hard to see him. I try and fail to spot him beneath the surface. When he doesn’t instantly come up, I start to panic. Taking a deep breath, I dive into the water and look through the water for him. A firm hand grips my arm and I’m dragged upwards.

I gasp for air when I break through the water. I’m thrown against a hard surface I know is the boat. I reach and grab hold of the first thing I can feel. When I swipe the water from my eyes with my free hand, the first thing I see is a hard muscled chest.

I found him, or was it the other way around?
