"You're dating someone else?" Jack asked.
Mia didn't reply, not knowing what to say.
"What is his name? Is he good to you?"
After a few seconds of silence, Mia spoke. "Yeah, he's good to me. His name is Colton." She replied, mentally slapping herself.
"When next are you going to see him?" Jack asked.
"What?" Mia asked, not sure as to what her father was driving at.
"When next will you be with Colton so I can talk to him. I'm not in New York, you wouldn't let me come down there either so this is the best I can do. Have a man-to-man conversation with him over the phone."
Mia facepalmed knowing the trouble she had brought upon herself.
"Either tomorrow or next tomorrow. I'll give you a call when we are together."
"Good. I can't wait to talk to him."
"But you know you don't have to, Dad," she said, hoping to convince him.
"I have to. It's my responsibility. I can only be at rest knowing he's a good man."
"If you say so, I'll give you a call whenever we are together."
"Okay, dear. I'll be expecting your call tomorrow or next tomorrow. Take very good care of yourself. Always reach out to me if you need anything. I love you."
"I love you too, Dad. Goodnight." She ended the call.
Putting her phone aside, Mia wanted to pull her hair off her head, wondering what mess she just put herself into. She didn't want her Dad to come over because he was going to be fussing over her but she never meant to mention that she was dating anyone. Most especially Colton's name.
"I can't think well anymore! My life has been a mess since I got to know that beast! I'll never forgive myself if I have to get married to him. If only I hadn't approached him that night. If only I had gone home straight after the breakup at the restaurant, all of these wouldn't be happening." Mia sighed. "I hate myself so much. I tend to make foolish decisions when angry." Mia spoke with her face buried in her palms. Then her phone beeped beside her. Taking a look at it, she saw that it was a text message from a not-so-familiar number.
"Hi Babe, Just thought I should check up on you. I'm sorry I made you cry today. It wasn't my intention. You're an amazing person and you deserve to be with a man who will cherish you and treat you well. Please give me a chance, Mia. I promise that you will not regret saying YES to me"
Reading the text the first time, Mia got confused. Confused because the contents of the message were heartwarming and the words he used were intimate.
She went over the content again and scoffed, rolling her eyes. She kept her phone aside and decided to prepare for bed.
Mia was sitting in her vanity area, going over her nighttime facial routine when the ringtone of her phone came through. The device was on the table before her, so taking a glance at it, she saw that it was Colt. No, she hadn't saved his number but from the digits, she knew he was the one.
Mia ignored the call and continued applying some products on her face.
Soon enough, the phone stopped ringing and a couple of seconds later, it rang again.
Mia sighed, without looking at the caller ID, she picked up the call, getting ready to blast Colton on the other end.
"Don't you know that when you text and call someone for the first time and they don't respond or pick up, it means they don't want to talk to you? Why are you being a pest?"
"Is Christoph bothering you?" The familiar voice came through.
Mia's eyes widened. She removed her phone from her ear, took a look at it, and saw that it was her best friend, Hailey, that was on the line.
"Hailey, I didn't know it was you. How are you?"
"Has Christoph been disturbing you?" She asked.
"No. I haven't heard from him since the day he made it clear that it was over between us." Mia replied. She wasn't expecting to hear from him either because she had blocked his number and also blocked him on all social media platforms.
"Then who was that?" Hailey asked. She knew her best friend wouldn't freak out except it was something serious. Mia was a very nice and gentle person.
"It's no one, Hailey."
"What do you mean by that? You sounded as if you were about to kill the person."
Mia sighed. "It's just some random person...An annoying person from work." She said, massaging the left side of her forehead. She and Hailey's friendship had always been pure and based on trust. She didn't like the fact that she was lying to her.
"Okay. If he or she keeps bothering you, you can always take actions in the office."
"That's what I will do eventually. How are you?"
"I'm great. Sorry for calling this late. Are you free tomorrow?"
"It depends. What do you have in mind?"
"I agreed to babysit Adrienne but Enoch wants me to accompany him somewhere tomorrow. I don't know if you can help out."
"You know how much I adore your niece. Of course, I'll be willing to watch over her."
"Thanks, babe. I love you!"
"You're welcome. When should I be expecting you both?"
"At noon. I'll make sure Enoch and I don't stay long so we can be back on time and have dinner together. How was your day?"
The duo talked some more before they ended the call.
Mia completed her nighttime routine, retired to bed, and briefly checked out her social media accounts. She was about to call it a night when a text message came through. It was from Colton. "Goodnight sweets!" The text was accompanied with a love emoji.
Mia rolled her eyes and angrily but carefully placed her phone on the nightstand. She buried her face into her pillow and let out a loud groan.
....................
Mia Edwards woke up to someone pressing her doorbell. She groaned, wondering who the hell that was. As far as she remembered, She wasn't expecting anyone till noon and the person at the door wouldn't stop pressing the damn bell.
She eventually got out of the bed and went to answer the door.
Mia was a couple of steps away from the door when she thought of something which made her stop in her tracks. "What if it's Colton?" Her subconscious whispered to her.
She frowned "I hope he's not the one. I'm going to break his head for disturbing my precious sleep."She mumbled, going to open the door. Since today was Sunday, She decided to sleep to her heart's content but someone had clearly disrupted that.
Opening the door, Mia came face to face with two strange faces. A male and a female, both neatly dressed in a suit. The male was holding a well-packaged food tray while the female was with a big bouquet of red Roses and to their left stood a medium-size travel suitcase. What the hell could be in there?
