In the middle of all the chaos, Alpha Hawk stood with his eyes lit up by a dangerous mix of anger and hopelessness. His leadership was falling apart right in front of him. The turn of events had set off a fire of anger in him that threatened to burn out his sense of right and wrong.
Sierra and David, came up to him. Even though the younger wolf was usually sure of himself, he seemed uneasy. As they got closer, Hawk's words cut through the noise like a knife with a thunderous growl.
"David," Hawk's voice was almost too angry to be heard. "You were supposed to know what Cayden was going to do! How could you let me down at such an important time?"
David's eyes flashed with a mixture of defiance and frustration. "How was I supposed to know that Cayden would be so cunning? He's always been one step ahead. I captured him. Wasn't that enough?"
Hawk's growl got louder, and he turned to look at Sierra, his mate, as his anger grew. "How could you let Selena get away? Because of your carelessness, we've lost one of our edges."
When Sierra looked at Hawk, her eyes hurt. "I tried as hard as I could. Aren't you glad I'm safe?"
Hawk scowled. "No, I'm not glad you're safe. Your safety means nothing if I can't win," Hawk snapped, his frustration clear in his voice.
Sierra felt a pang of hurt at Hawk's words. It seemed like nothing she did was ever enough for him. She didn't regret her decision anymore.
"So, what are we going to do now?" She asked.
Hawk's lip curled in bitter disdain. Leave, of course. There's no time to spare for lost causes. The council hall is falling, and our enemies are closing in."
"But dad, how are we going to leave? We can't leave without Rose," David said, his voice carrying a hint of desperation. "She's still out there, and she's my mate."
Hawk turned his gaze on his son, his frustration boiling over once more. "I don't care about your personal attachments. You can always get a new mate! Now let's go."
Sierra and David followed Hawk through the chaos with one last look of sadness in their eyes. Their steps were heavy with the weight of failure and betrayal. As they fought their way through the chaos, they could hear snarls and roars from the war. The once-powerful council hall was now a battlefield, full of blood and signs of how desperate the people fighting there were.
When the three finally got out of the chaos, Hawk's eyes were still burning with a mix of anger and fear. All of his hard work over the years to gain power and influence was gone.
I should never have put my faith in Magnus. He thought. As his warriors and betas died one by one, he felt the link break. He had to go back home and hide for a while. Once the dust had settled down, Cayden would have given up looking for him. He'd come out of the darkness and get his revenge. He smiled to himself. He may have lost a fight, but he was going to win the war in the end. He had hidden money in a Swiss bank account and put it into stocks and real estate all over the world. He would run away to a different country and wait.
With plans for the future swirling in his mind, they drove away from the council hall, the sounds of battle fading into the distance. David's grip on the steering wheel was tight, and his jaw clenched as he listened to Hawk's continuous mutterings of disappointment and anger.
David suddenly hit the brakes hard, and the car skidded to a stop in the middle of a thick forest. Hawk's anger grew as he turned to his son and got ready to yell at him again. But as he looked ahead with wide-open eyes, his words died on his lips. Cayden, Thalia, and Ruben stood in front of them. Their shapes looked like they came from the darkness. Hawk's heart was pounding in his chest, and his feelings told him to be careful as he got out of the car and looked at the three people in front of him.
"What's going on?" Hawk's voice held a mixture of anger and trepidation. "David, explain!"
David's smirk was infuriating; a flash of his father's stubborn spirit was mirrored in his eyes. "Sorry, Dad, but it's time you owned up to your mistakes."
Hawk's growl erupted, his rage threatening to consume him, but he was frozen in place as Cayden's voice cut through the tension, cold and unyielding. "Hawk, you're under arrest for your crimes against the werewolf kind and for endangering the balance."
The group surrounded the car. David and Sierra got out of the car. And Ruben pulled out Hawk by grabbing his arm.
Hawk's cries echoed through the tense silence. Each word was a desperate attempt to get back the power he was losing. "This is crazy! This is not possible."
His eyes, once ablaze with authority, were now clouded with a mixture of fury and disbelief, fixed on his mate, Sierra, and his son, David. He shrugged off Ruben's grip.
"You dare to betray me?" Hawk's voice was a snarl that echoed through the night, like a wolf's growl made louder by the weight of betrayal. "After all that I've done for this pack, for you!"
David's stance was defiant, a mirror of the fury in his father's eyes. "You never cared for us, dad. We were nothing more than pawns in your quest for power."
Sierra's voice joined her son's. "I've had enough of your lies and your cheating, Hawk. I won't stand by your side any longer."
"You ungrateful traitors!" Hawk's roar was a symphony of rage, his eyes blazing as he took a step forward, the aura of his power rippling through the clearing. "I am the alpha! You will not defy me!"
But Sierra's gaze held steady, her voice unwavering. "Your reign ends here, Hawk. I have suffered long enough."
Hawk lunged at Sierra, making a deep gash in her throat. Sierra stumbled back, clutching her bleeding throat, but her determination remained unyielding.
"Mum!" David screamed and grabbed Sierra. "Stay with me, Mum!" David pleaded, tears streaming down his face as he desperately tried to stop the bleeding. Sierra's eyes locked with her son's.
Cayden's voice cut through the air. It was a low rumble that seemed to come from the ground itself. "All right, Hawk. Your time to pay up is here."
Hawk's teeth were bared, his snarl of defiance echoing through the clearing. "You think you can just take everything from me? You're delusional!"
David's gaze was steady as he turned to Cayden and Thalia. "He's yours. Take him."
Cayden reached out and grabbed Hawk's wrist as he lunged. His grip was strong. Hawk's strong body struggled against Cayden's hold, making his muscles tense, but the usurper's strength did not give way. Cayden's eyes locked on Hawk's, and a challenge passed between them without being said.
"You're weak, Cayden." Hawk's voice was strained, his breath coming in ragged bursts as he fought against Cayden's grip. "You're as weak as your father."
Cayden's grip tightened even more. He refused to let Hawk's taunts break his resolve. With a steely gaze, Cayden retorted, "Weakness is not defined by bloodline, Hawk. It is defined by one's actions."
Hawk charged forwards with a primal roar that broke the silence. His muscles rippled as he closed the space between them in an instant. As he went for Cayden's throat, the moonlight made his sharp teeth stand out against his dark fur. But Cayden's reflexes were just as quick. He twisted his body in a smooth move to avoid the attack.
Hawk's beak snapped shut on nothing but air, and he landed with a heavy thud on the forest floor with a snarl of anger. Cayden jumped at the chance and went straight for Hawk's unprotected side. When their bodies hit each other, the sound was like thunder. When the claws hit the hair, it made a horrible sound, and a whirlwind of fur and muscle came out as the two alphas fought fiercely.
In a rush of motion, Hawk could land a solid blow on Cayden's side, which made him stumble. But Cayden got back on his feet quickly, and his eyes flashed with a mix of purpose and anger. Cayden attacked with a snarl that sounded like it came from the depths of his soul. His claws cut through the air like sharp knives. There were furrows in the ground below them, showing how much force they used. Blood, which stood out against their hair, stained the forest floor, which showed how much their fight had cost.
Then, with a force that broke the tension like glass, they lost their hold on each other. Cayden's strike hit Hawk right on the side, where his claws made a mark. He let out a triumphant snarl as Hawk stumbled, and his power finally gave out. The alphas looked at each other again, and this time they didn't say anything.
With one last, raspy breath, Hawk's body gave up, giving in to what was coming. As soon as the fighting was over, the forest seemed to let out a breath, and the sounds of their fight faded into the night. Cayden stood with his chest heaving and his eyes locked on the alpha, who had just died in front of him. The moonlight gave the area a spooky glow that showed where they had fought so hard.
But just as Cayden was about to break Hawk's neck, he had a sudden flash of understanding that stopped him from doing what he was about to do. Cayden's hold on Hawk loosened.
"Wait." Cayden's eyes were far away for a moment as he thought about what he had just heard. "We can't kill him."
His expression was conflicted as he turned to Thalia. "Selena's mother's life is tied to him. If he dies, she dies."
Thalia's brow furrowed, and her gaze locked onto Hawk as she considered Cayden's words.
"Selena's mother?"
Cayden nodded. "Yes, Selena's mother. She was held captive by Hawk, and her life is connected to his. If he dies, she won't survive either," Cayden explained, his voice filled with concern. Thalia's eyes widened in realisation, and a sense of urgency washed over her.
Thalia's gaze shifted from Cayden to Hawk, her expression inscrutable as she considered their options. After a tense moment, she nodded, her stance unwavering.
"Very well." Thalia's voice was a measured declaration. "He will not die at our hands. But he will be locked away for the safety of everyone. Let's return to the council hall."
