Alpha's Caged Love

The aftermath

Ch. 137 / 159 May 05, 2026

The hospital room seemed to hold its breath, as if it knew something important was happening inside. Selena stood just outside the door, her heart beating like a drum in her chest. She had been waiting for this moment for fifteen long years. When the door opened and she saw her mother lying there, awake and looking at her with dazed eyes, it felt both unreal and very real.

Selena said, "Mum," in a trembling voice.

Jennifer's eyes widened as she fixed her gaze on Selena's face. Her gaze sparked with recognition, followed by a rush of emotions—surprise, disbelief, and eventually, a beautiful joy that filled up her exhausted cheeks. "Selena?" Her voice was merely a breath of wonder.

Selena's eyes welled up with tears as she moved into the room. She reached the edge of the bed and saw her mother, the lady who had given her life and had been removed from her for far too long.

Selena softly grasped Jennifer's hand in hers, her fingers intertwining with her mother's. "Yes, Mother. It's me."

As she brought their hands together and pressed Selena's knuckles against her lips, Jennifer's lips trembled, and a tear ran down her cheek. "Oh, my sweet girl. It's really you."

Selena felt a tidal wave of emotions that had been suppressed for far too long. She knelt by the bed, tears streaming down her cheeks as she buried her face in her mother's palm. "I really missed you, Mum. I didn't know you were alive all these years. I would have come to you sooner."

Jennifer's other hand brushed against Selena's hair in a delicate caress. "I'm so sorry, Selena. I never wanted to abandon you."

Selena raised her head, her eyes filled with pain and understanding. "I know, Mum. It wasn't your fault."

When they looked at each other, it was as if the years they had been apart no longer mattered. The love they had for each other was a bridge that reached across time and space and brought their hearts back together that words could never describe. The silence between them was more powerful than anything they could have said. They both knew how strong their tie was.

Jennifer's voice was barely above a whisper, but it was full of a lifetime's worth of desire. "Selena, tell me about your life. Tell me about all the things I missed."

As she dried her eyes, Selena's lips twisted into a bittersweet smile. "There's so much to tell, Mum. There are so many stories I want to share with you."

Selena then talked. She talked about her past, her experiences, her accomplishments, and the difficulties she had overcome. She spoke with a voice that blended with tears and a clear sense of vulnerability. Jennifer absorbed each word as though attempting to make up for lost time. Her eyes never left Selena's face as she listened intently.

Cayden was standing in the hallway right outside the room. He had respected their personal space and permitted Selena to enjoy her long-awaited reunion uninterrupted. As he listened to the muffled conversation coming from the room—the mother and daughter who were now getting the chance to reconcile after all these years—his heart filled with a variety of feelings. Cayden leant against the wall, his thoughts a jumble of feelings. He smiled through the mistiness in his eyes. He would never experience the joy of meeting his parents again, but he was happy that Selena felt that joy. Then he strolled away.

****************

Max, Thalia, and Ruben were amid the cleanup effort, each wearing an expression of determination mingled with exhaustion. Max bent down to pick up a piece of broken wood, shaking his head with a rueful smile. "Well, this happened when we decided to redecorate the council hall."

Thalia chuckled as she lifted a tattered banner from the ground. "I don't think anyone will sit in those chairs soon."

Ruben joined in with a grin, his hands full of debris. "Hey Max, where's Cayden? I haven't seen him since the battle ended." He asked.

Max straightened up, wiping sweat from his brow. "Oh, Cayden went home with Selena. She wasn't feeling too well."

Thalia's concern was understandable on her furrowed brow. "Is she okay?"

Max nodded reassuringly. "Yeah, she's fine now. Cayden called me earlier and said she was resting. He's probably playing the attentive mate."

"Well, let's hope Selena gets better soon. We've got a mess to clean up here." Thalia gestured towards the scattered debris. "I'll start organising the cleanup crew. We need to get this place back in order as soon as possible."

All the corrupt Alphas and Council members were captured. They were going to face trial and get punished, but before that, they had to be put in a maximum-security prison. Thalia knew that ensuring the corrupt Alphas and Council members were securely locked away was crucial to preventing any further harm or attempts at retaliation. She contacted Dean and other allies to arrange for their transfer to a highly fortified facility, where they would be held until their trial. With this step taken, Thalia could focus on restoring order and rebuilding the community that had been affected by their actions.

Thalia sighed, her gaze shifting to the chaos that surrounded them. "It's going to take a lot of effort to rebuild and restore order in our realm after everything they've done." Ruben nodded in agreement, his expression turning serious. "But we'll do whatever it takes to ensure justice is served and our people can heal."

Cayden has already formed an alliance with several of the younger Alpha sons. After their fathers were killed or captured, they were ready to take over the pack. Luna Sierra, sadly, was dead. She died because of the hawk's attack. Although Thalia didn't completely trust David, there was no other choice but to let him lead the pack for the time being. She'd monitor him to make sure he didn't follow in his father's footsteps.

As they continued their cleanup, Max's phone buzzed with an incoming call. He fished it out of his pocket and answered, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise. "Speak of the devil."

Thalia looked at him inquiringly. "What is it?"

Max smiled. "It's Cayden again."

Ruben chimed in with a laugh. "He must really miss you, Max."

"Everything okay?" Max asked, his brow furrowed.

Max paused for a moment, listening intently to Cayden at the other end of the line. His expression turned serious as he spoke.

"Guys, you won't believe this. Jennifer, Selena's mother, is awake from her coma."

Max and Ruben's stunned expressions followed Thalia's gasp. "No way! Thalia exclaimed.

Ruben's eyes widened. "After all these years?"

Max nodded; his voice tinged with amazement. "Yes, she woke up."

Thalia's eyes filled with tears as she whispered, "That's incredible. Selena must be overjoyed."

Max's face softened with a smile. "I can't even imagine how she must feel right now."

"Yeah, but does that mean that Hawk and her connection have changed?" Ruben pondered.

Thalia shrugged, uncertainty clouding her features. "I'm not sure. It's possible that their connection has evolved, or maybe it's completely severed now." Thalia furrowed her brow, deep in thought. "I must see her; I have seen nothing like this before."

Once they made sure that the cleanup and the prisoners were in safe hands, they left for Spirit Walker territory.
