The acrid stench of smoke and burnt wood mingled with the metallic tang of spilt blood in the air. The once-grand chamber was now shrouded in darkness, with flickering flames dancing like malevolent spirits.
Cayden's heart beat faster as he broke free from the chains, the thick smoke billowing around him like a sinister shroud. The heat of the flames licked at his skin, but he pressed on, determined to find Selena. His bond with her, the unbreakable link that connected their souls, pulsed with urgency. He realised he had to find her before it was too late. When he finally saw her standing inside the sacred circle, it made his heart jump for joy. She hadn't moved or given in to panic or hopelessness. In the chaos, her silhouette stood out, and Cayden walked faster as he got closer to her.
"Selena!" he shouted, and his voice was loud enough to be heard over the noise. She turned towards him, and through the fog, her eyes locked on his. The intensity of their connection seemed to bridge the gap between them, like a lifeline in the middle of the abyss.
"Cayden," she said in a whisper that was hard to hear over the roaring fire. As they reached for each other, the world around them seemed to fade away. As they did, their fingers touched the invisible edge of the circle. With that brief touch, Cayden felt a rush of comfort. He wasn't fighting this battle alone.
Cayden reached out to Max and the other Alphas, who had joined forces with them to help. The connection was tense, and their thoughts flowed together.
"Close the council hall!" Cayden commanded through the link, his mental voice carrying the weight of authority. "No Alpha leaves this place. Seal it off!"
The message went around in the minds of his fellow Alphas, and their answers were like a chorus of yeses. The council hall, which was already a place where werewolves fought, was now turned into a prison. The walls seemed to close in on themselves, as if Cayden had told nature to do so.
With the tactical advantage secured, Cayden turned his focus back to Selena. The chaos of the hall raged on, with werewolves locked in savage combat and fangs and claws tearing through the smoke-filled air. But Cayden was single-minded, his gaze fixed on his mate.
"Selena," he said, his voice low and urgent. "We need to move to find safety." He extended a hand to her, the gesture a silent promise that he would protect her, no matter the cost.
Selena nodded. She put her hand in his, and as he pulled her towards him, their fingers got tangled. Together, they made their way through the dangerous terrain, avoiding sparks and broken things as they went.
Cayden's instincts led them to a dark corner in the back of the council room, away from the chaos near the entrance. He stopped there, and his eyes went straight to Selena's.
"Stay here," he said in a firm voice, with a hint of tenderness that only she could bring out. "With the other women. I'll be back." The room held most of the scantily clad 'pets' which the other alphas had brought along.
Selena looked at him with a mix of desire and worry in her eyes. "Be careful, Cayden," she told him, and his heart echoed her silent plea.
Cayden gave a firm nod, his jaw set. He leant in and gave her forehead a soft kiss before pulling away. "Selena, I'll come back to you. No matter what happens, we'll deal with it."
***************
As Cayden's figure disappeared into the smoke-filled council hall, Selena took a steadying breath, her heart a mixture of worry and hope. But her thoughts were quickly diverted as she realised she wasn't alone in the shadows. There, besides her, stood Rose and her stepmother, Sierra. Selena's eyes widened in surprise, her features a canvas of astonishment.
"Rose? Sierra?" Selena stammered, her voice a mixture of confusion and disbelief. The combination of the two women, so different yet connected to her in distinct ways, was enough to make her head spin.
"Oh, don't look so surprised," Rose purred, her voice dripping with self-assured amusement. "I have my own reasons for being here, and they just so align with Cayden's grand plan."
Selena's brows furrowed as she tried to process Rose's words. She exchanged a quick glance with Sierra, her stepmother's expression a curious mix of apprehension and determination.
"Wait, you're saying... you're on our side?" Selena's voice held a note of incredulity.
Rose let out a low chuckle, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "Let's just say I don't particularly like your dad either," she admitted, her tone dripping with sardonic humour. "And if joining forces with Cayden helps David become the next Alpha, well, who am I to resist such an opportunity?"
Selena blinked, her surprise slowly giving way to understanding. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place. She cast a glance at Sierra, who met her gaze with a nod of confirmation.
Sierra's lips curled into a wry smile. "Your man has a knack for bringing unlikely allies together," she remarked, her voice tinged with a touch of anger. "I am done with my cheating mate. I am not stupid like your mum Selena. I know when it's time to end things."
Selena let out a relieved laugh as she realised what was really going on. She was always amazed by how resourceful Cayden was. He had not only put together a risky plan to get rid of her father's cruel rule, but he had also brought Rose and Sierra together.
"Guess I underestimated him," Selena mused, her lips curling into a playful smile. "Who would've thought he had such a talent for diplomacy?"
Rose rolled her eyes. "Oh, don't let it go to his head," she quipped, a hint of begrudging admiration underlying her words. "He's still infuriatingly smug, even when he's orchestrating a rebellion."
" But I suppose we must give credit where credit is due," Sierra chimed in, a small smirk playing on her lips. "This does not mean that I have forgiven you. I still hate you." Sierra said to Selena.
"I never thought you would do anything else, Luna Sierra." Selena gave a cold answer. "But if you betray Cayden, I will make sure you die before this battle is over."
Sierra scoffed. "Oh! I have no interest in taking anyone's life as long as they stay away from mine. Speaking of life, did you tell Cayden that you are carrying his baby?"
Sierra's words hung in the air, causing Selena's expression to falter for a moment. "That's none of your business," she retorted, her voice tinged with defensiveness. "But rest assured, I won't let anyone, or anything, harm this child."
The humming of her mental connection abruptly distracted Sierra. Hawk was reaching out to her and all the pack members.
"Kill everyone." He commanded. "Sierra, where are you? Shouldn't you be here fighting with me?"
"Oh, Sweetie! I tried to find you but didn't succeed. I barely made it out alive," Sierra spoke through the link in her mind.
"You bitch! The life of your Alpha is more important than anything else. Now, go to the left gate and, if you find Selena, bring her with you." Hawk snapped at her.
"I understand, Alpha." Sierra responded. She closed the mental link and took a deep breath.
Her eyes warmed as she regarded Selena. "Your mate cares deeply for you," she said, her tone softening. "You're lucky to have someone who'd move mountains for you."
Selena looked puzzled at Sierra. 'What was that?' She thought.
"I have to go; please don't leave." Sierra said something as she left the safe room.
