Alpha's Caged Love

Embers of triumph

Ch. 134 / 159 May 05, 2026

Selena's fingers were white knuckled as she clutched the edges of her dress, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and determination. Rose, her gaze unyielding, watched the unfolding turmoil with an air of detachment.

As the sounds of snarls and clashes echoed, Selena turned to Rose. Her voice, laced with worry, cut through the silence. "I can't help but wonder about Cayden. Is he alright out there? Should I go out and check?"

Rose's lips curled into something that looked like a smirk, and her voice was full of both mockery and pleasure. "Oh, I'm sure Cayden is doing great in all the chaos. I wonder if David abandoned me."

"I am sure he will be back. He is your mate!" Selena reassured Rose; her tone filled with confidence. "David wouldn't abandon you."

Before Rose could reply, a sudden tremor shook the chamber, the walls groaning as if protesting the world outside. Dust motes danced in the air as the very foundation of the council hall seemed to shudder with an extra force.

Selena's heart raced as she stumbled, her gaze darting around the chamber as if searching for answers. "What was that? Another blast?"

Rose's eyes remained fixed on the entrance to their hiding place, her lips curling into a sinister smile that made Selena's blood run cold. "No, my dear Selena. That was no mere blast. It seems the council hall itself is crumbling."

Selena's breath quickened, her heart pounding in her chest as she glanced at Rose, her eyes wide with urgency.

"What do we do now, Rose? We can't stay here if the council hall collapses."

The smoke stuck to Selena's skin and lungs. As the ashes fell all around her, her eyes burned. She couldn't get enough air into her lungs, and her breath came out in gasps as she tried. Pain shot through her whole body. Her ears were ringing, and everything around her seemed to spin.

"Rose," she tried to gasp, since Rose was the one who had been closest to her before the first explosion.

Selena let out a loud, painful cough, and she fell backwards to the ground as she tried to get herself back under control. After what seemed like hours of pain, she could finally stop coughing and sit back up to look around.

The big, fancy building was gone. In its place was a burned-out wreck. The room was exposed to the chaos outside.

Selena stumbled and then got up. As she moved, ash rose from the ground in clouds. She could just about feel warm blood running down her face. Selena walked through the wreckage with a mix of fear and purpose in her heart. She lingered, and each step echoed in the silence that hung over the broken hallways.

The smell of smoke and destruction was still in the air. She touched a burned beam with her fingers as she looked at the path of damage that had ripped through the heart of the werewolf community.

"Cayden?" Her voice was scarcely audible beyond the shattered walls, a cry swallowed up by the stifling atmosphere. She had to find him to know he was safe amid the wreckage.

Her footsteps echoed down a corridor, the council hall's ruins bearing witness to the conflict that had taken place. The air was thick with the weight of uncertainty, and the tension was apparent. She turned a corner; her breath caught in her throat as a figure emerged from the darkness.

"Selena," a malice-laced voice growled. The figure who entered the gloomy light. She couldn't recall his name, but he was an alpha who had been a member of Hawk's inner circle. He was torturing her during the auction.

Selena's heart rate increased, her instincts urging her to run. But his allegations slashed through the air like a razor before she could respond. "This happened because of you. Because, and that bastard Cayden."

Selena's eyes narrowed as she took a protective stance, as fear and rage raced within her. "I had nothing to do with this carnage. Your and my father's lust and desire for power drove us to this point."

His lips curled into a nasty grin, his eyes flaming with contempt and rage. "You are naïve if you believe you are blameless. Your existence alone is a curse. But mark my words, Selena, I will make sure you pay for this." The venom in his voice sent shivers down her spine, but she refused to back down.

He pushed forwards before Selena could answer, his muscular figure driving at her with lethal intent. Selena barely avoided his attack, her heart beating as she fought to find her balance. She couldn't shift because she was pregnant, making her vulnerable. Selena's heart was beating fast, and her breath came in quick gasps as she tried to fight off the attack.

"Get the fuck away from her," Cayden growled. He was so angry that he threw a random piece of metal at the alpha's face with all his strength. It hit him right in the face, and blood poured out of his face.

He screamed like a child and covered his bloody face with his hands.

"You sonofabitch!" Cayden cried out.

"You! You should have been killed along with your family," he snarled, blood rolling down his nose.

"Yeah, I get that a lot." Cayden shrugged. "But guess what? It's over!"

Cayden didn't waste time fiddling with that cretin. He just shot him with his gun, which had silver bullets. The man fell, dead.

"Selena!" Cayden's voice was a desperate cry, a mix of anxiety and relief laced into her name's vowels. He reached out, gently encircling her arms and pulling her away from the dangerous wreckage.

Cayden met Selena's eyes, which were filled with a mix of emotions. Her fingers tightened on his arms, as if to reassure herself that he was real and that this was not another hallucination created by the surrounding commotion. "Cayden," she said, her voice trembling with the weight of her anxieties.

"You're safe now," he says. Cayden's words were reassuring, and his gaze was fixed on Selena's with an intensity that echoed his relief. "We'll get out of here."

Selena's glance slid beyond Cayden's shoulder as they moved away from the devastation, a flicker of fear tinting her eyes. "What about Rose, Cayden? I can't seem to find her!"

Cayden's expression softened, his fingertips gently brushing against Selena's cheek. "Rose is safe. She is being looked after."

Selena's shoulders sagged with relief, the weight of concern gradually lifting from her frame. Her voice, now filled with thanks, was hardly audible amid the chaos. "Thank you, Cayden."

Cayden's fingers ran through her hair lovingly, his touch a soothing salve against the mental storm raging within her. "Magnus is dead. It's all over," he mumbled with a serious tone in his voice.

Selena's eyes welled up with tears, their sheen reflecting the glimmers of light that broke through the surrounding darkness. Her emotions erupted—a complex mix of sadness, relief, and a sense of finality. "And what about Dad?"

Cayden fixed his gaze on hers, his eyes expressing a depth of understanding that went beyond words. "Thalia and Ruben have arrested Hawk, along with those who survived."

"You didn't…kill him?" Selena's words were full of curiosity.

"How could I kill him when I know your mother's life is tied to him?" Cayden replied.

"You know about her?” Selena asked, her voice filled with concern and confusion.

"She is safe. I raided Hawk's club and took her away. She is in the pack's hospital."

Selena's lips quivered, her tears finally spilling over as the weight of all that had transpired crashed over her. Her fingers tightened on Cayden's shirt, as if anchoring herself to his presence amidst the overwhelming tide of emotions.

Cayden's arms held her close, a steadying force against the waves of feelings that threatened to pull her under. He whispered soothing words into her ear, his voice a lifeline during the tempest. "We've won, Selena. The battle is over."

Selena's sobs were a mixture of sorrow and relief, the culmination of all the pain and uncertainty that had been building within her for so long. The walls she had erected to shield herself finally crumbled, allowing her vulnerability to come to the surface.

Cayden's grip on her tightened, his own emotions weaving into the embrace they shared. He held her, allowing her to release the pent-up anguish that had taken root within her. The surrounding ruins seemed to bear witness to their struggle, a testament to the darkness they had faced and overcome.

As Selena's tears gradually subsided, she pulled back slightly; her gaze locked onto Cayden's with a mixture of gratitude and affection. His thumb brushed away the remnants of her tears; his touch was gentle and comforting. "I'll always protect you, Selena. You mean everything to me."

A small smile curved Selena's lips, the intensity of their shared emotions lingering in the air. "Cayden, I have to tell you something."

But just as Selena was feeling a brief sense of peace, she was hit by a sudden change. As her face contorted in pain, Cayden's hug seemed to lose its warmth. She gasped in shock as a sharp pain cut through her belly.

"Cayden," she said, her voice straining, and the word came out of her mouth with a gasp.

Cayden's eyes grew wide with worry, and he automatically tightened his grip on Selena. "What is wrong, Selena?"

The pain got worse, to where it seemed to tear her apart. Selena's fingers gripped Cayden's arms, and her nails dug into his skin as she tried to deal with the sudden pain that had taken over her body.

"Cayden," she could say, locked teeth, as the pain was getting so bad that it was blurring her vision. "It hurts. I don't want to lose our baby."

"WHAT!" Cayden's worry turned into a sense of urgency in an instant. He quickly but gently took Selena into his arms. His moves were fluid and on purpose. "Wait a sec, Selena. I'll get you out of this place."

He moved slowly and carefully towards the waiting car.
