Jennifer sat on the cold, uneven ground, her eyes locked on the entrance as Hawk's tall figure loomed into view. Her once-tattered clothes clung to her like a second skin. She struggled against the rope to break free.
"Jennifer, you will hurt yourself." Dr. Colin's deep voice resonated through the air, filled with concern. He crouched down beside me. "We need to find another way out of here, together."
"How?" Jennifer asked. "We don't have the time. Hawk has gone mad!"
Dr. Colin's eyes flickered with determination as he scanned their surroundings. He shifted and moved behind Jennifer so that their backs were touching. Hawk had tied their hands behind their backs. Dr. Colin whispered, "I have an idea. If we can manoeuvre and try to open each other's ropes, we can get free."
Jennifer's eyes widened with hope as they silently coordinated their movements, inching closer to their potential escape. The silver blasted her, but it was worth the shot.
"We just need to be careful not to alert Hawk," Dr. Colin cautioned, his voice barely audible. Jennifer nodded, her heart pounding with anticipation as they continued their plan.
Hawk returned to the place where he had kept Jennifer and Dr. Colin was imprisoned, and it appeared the very walls remembered his malevolent presence. His footsteps echoed through the eerie silence, each one an ominous drumbeat that heralded his arrival. Jennifer and Colin stopped as they faced Hawk again.
As Hawk's icy blue eyes met Jennifer's, she couldn't help but feel a shiver run down her spine. There was a predatory glint in his gaze—a sinister satisfaction that made her heart race with fear and frustration. She had tried to reason with him before, to make him see the humanity that still lingered within him, but her words had fallen on deaf ears.
"Connard," Jennifer began, her voice trembling, "you don't have to do this. We can find another way. There's goodness in you, buried deep beneath all this darkness."
Hawk scoffed, his lips curling into a cruel smile. "Goodness, Jennifer? You still hold on to that naïve hope, don't you? The world has no use for goodness. Power matters, and I intend to wield it."
Jennifer's eyes welled with tears as she tried to reach the man she once knew—the man she had loved. "You were a protector once, a leader with honour. Remember the lives you've saved and the people who looked up to you."
Hawk's expression grew colder, his eyes narrowing. "I am tired of this argument. I've embraced the darkness that's always been a part of me. It's strengthened me, and I won't let sentimentality cloud my judgment."
As he spoke, Hawk raised his hand, signalling to someone in the shadows. Jennifer turned her head to see several burly men emerge, their faces masked with indifference. They encircled her and Dr. Colin, their presence a constant reminder of their captivity.
Jennifer's voice wavered as she questioned Hawk, "Who are they?"
Hawk's smirk widened as he leant in close, his voice dripping with malice. "Oh, Jennifer, you think I'd risk keeping you two unwatched? I've hired mercenaries to make sure you stay right where I want you."
Jennifer was shocked and couldn't hide it. Finding out that Hawk had enough money to hire mercenaries was scary. She didn't realise how evil he was or how willing he was to do anything to get his evil plan done.
Dr. Colin's voice broke through Jennifer's despair. "Hawk, you don't have to do this. There's always a choice."
Hawk's bitter laughter filled the cave, a haunting sound that seemed to echo off the walls. "A choice, Colin? You think your council is going to give me a choice? They will hunt me like a dog. They will never let me live in peace. This is the only way for me to ensure my survival and achieve my goals."
Jennifer's heart sank as she realised the extent of Hawk's desperation and determination. She knew stopping him would require more than just convincing words from Dr. Colin. With a sense of finality, Hawk produced two syringes filled with a clear liquid. Jennifer and Dr. Colin exchanged a worried glance, realizing the danger.
Jennifer's voice trembled as she pleaded, "Please, Hawk, don't do this. There's still time to turn back."
Hawk's hand tightened around the syringes; his eyes were devoid of mercy. "I've made my choice, Jennifer. And now it's time for you to make yours."
Hawk gave the drug to Jennifer and Dr. Colin in one quick move. As the drug took effect, the world around them got fuzzy, their muscles got heavy, and their vision got worse. Jennifer's last conscious thought was a desperate wish that some part of Connard's humanity was still there, ready to be brought back to life.

There was no time. Cayden quickly summoned his men and was ready to leave. There was one last thing he had to do. As he walked into the packhouse's common room, he saw something that made him stop.
Selena was lying on the worn-out couch, where the soft moonlight was coming in through the windows. She was sound asleep, and her chest moved up and down at a steady beat. Her long, black hair fell over her shoulders and onto the pillows, and a stray piece tickled her face. As Cayden walked up to her, he couldn't help but smile. He had seen Selena struggle and fight with unshakable strength, but at that moment, she looked weak and ethereal. His love for her grew stronger and stronger.
Cayden got down next to her and was very careful. He gently tucked that loose hair behind her ear. Selena moved, but she didn't wake up. She smiled calmly, as if she could feel him with her even in her dreams. He knew she was the piece of his soul that was missing and that she made him whole in every way. I couldn't imagine living without her.
But Cayden didn't want to wake her from her peaceful sleep. He got down on one knee and gave her a soft kiss on the forehead. His lips stayed there for a moment. He whispered, "Sleep well, my love," and then slowly stood up. He turned and walked away, giving Selena one last longing glance before leaving the common area.
Selena woke up in the middle of the night to find herself alone in a vast, ethereal field. The grass went on forever in every direction and swayed gently in a cool breeze. As the sun went down below the horizon, the purple and gold colours of dusk filled the sky above. This dreamscape gave her a feeling of peace that she had never felt before. As she went deeper into the field, a dark shape on the horizon caught her eye. It was Cayden's wolf. It was powerful and sleek, and it moved elegantly through the tall grass. Its eyes seemed to call to her. Selena's heart beat faster as she followed the wolf. She was drawn to it by a force she couldn't explain. The wolf's graceful stride carried it further and further away from her as it led her deeper into the field. Selena ran faster to catch up. She was about to lose sight of the wolf when it suddenly stopped and turned to face her. In the time it took her heart to beat, the wolf changed right in front of her eyes. The fur fell off, and in the blink of an eye, Cayden was standing in front of her with his green eyes locked on hers. He was handsome as always, with tousled dark hair.
She whispered, "Cayden?" He put out his hand, and she grabbed it right away. It was warm and firm, and his fingers were wrapped around hers. She could feel his heart beating quickly under her hand. Before she could say anything, a far-off howl broke the peace of her dream. Selena turned her head toward the sound and saw her mother's wolf, and her eyes were full of concern.
"Selena!" her mother's wolf cried out again, but this time it was louder. "My child, wake up. Wake up and help Cayden. It's a trap. Don't let him go to Hawk. Save him!"
Selena looked back at Cayden, who was now fading away like fog in the morning sun. She felt a rush of fear. "NO! Don't go," she cried out in a desperate tone. It was too late, though. The dream broke like glass, and Selena woke up panting for air and dripping with sweat. Still hearing her mother's urgent call. It took her a while to recollect her thoughts. Last night, she was with the girls when she fell asleep. She could still feel the panic coursing through her veins as she took deep breaths to calm herself down. The scent of Cayden's cologne lingered in the air, which meant he had visited her while she slept.
Her mother's warning rang in her head, and she ran out of the common room. It was still dark outside. Selena reached Cayden's office and saw a few guards loitering around in the corridor.
"Where is Cayden?" She asked one guard.
"Alpha Cayden has left for the Silver River pack." Selena's heart sank at the guard's response.
"When did he leave?" She asked in panic.
"About an hour ago," The guard responded.
"What? He left without me. But he promised he would take me along." Selena muttered.
"Do you have a phone?" Selena asked the guard, her voice trembling with worry. The guard nodded and handed her his phone. Selena quickly dialled Cayden's number, hoping he would answer.
It went unanswered.
