The moon hung high in the night sky, casting an eerie glow over the aftermath of the battlefield. The news of the fight had quickly spread throughout the werewolf community. Prompting the Council, the governing body of werewolves, to take immediate action. Beta Max was called by the Council to explain the attack. As Max faced the Council, his eyes held a mix of determination and apprehension, fully aware that the fate of Cayden and his pack hung in the balance.
Summoned to the grand chamber where the Council held its meetings, Max felt a mix of trepidation and determination. He understood the weight of his responsibility and the precarious position in which Cayden’s pack now found themselves. As he approached the imposing doors, guarded by stoic werewolf sentinels, his heart pounded in his chest.
Inside the council chamber, tension filled the air as Max confronted the hostile gazes of the council members. Their eyes burned with accusation, demanding answers. Max cleared his throat, his voice steady but tinged with urgency.
Taking a moment to observe the council members, Max noted their identities. The council comprised seven individuals: Jackson, Fenrir, Magnus, Astrid, Thalia, Ragnar, and Ruben. They were all revered Elders within the werewolf community. But Max knew their reputations didn’t necessarily reflect their true nature. Ruben and Jackson were sympathetic to Max’s cause, and he hoped to win over Thalia, the only female alpha in the council.
“Beta Max,” Alpha Fenrir, the leader of the Council, boomed with authority yet tinged with scepticism. “You have been summoned to shed light on the events that unfolded between Alpha Cayden and Alpha Fred’s pack. Explain the reasons for Cayden’s attack and Alpha Fred’s death.”
But before Max could respond, Magnus, interrupting curtly, interjected, “I summoned your, Alpha. Where is he?”
Maintaining his composure, Max took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts before addressing the Council. His voice resonated with conviction as he recounted the events that led to the clash.
“Unfortunately, my Alpha’s injury prevented him from attending,” Max replied calmly, hoping to avoid any unnecessary confrontation. “But I assure you, he sends his regards and wishes for a speedy resolution to the current issue at hand.”
Ruben and Jackson nodded in agreement, showing their support for Max’s words. Thalia observed the exchange with a keen eye, noting Max’s diplomacy and tact in handling the situation.
“Respected Members of the Council,” Max continued, his tone steady and earnest. “As I stand before you today, I am weighed down by the gravity of these unfortunate circumstances. The attack Alpha Cayden launched on Alpha Fred’s pack was not an unprovoked act of aggression. There were compelling reasons that drove him to take such drastic action, and they are as follows.”
The council members leaned forward. Their faces displayed a mixture of curiosity and suspicion as they listened intently to Max’s explanation. They were eager to hear his account.
“Alpha Fred was complicit in heinous activities, including the illegal enslavement of beings. Which directly contradicts the laws that govern our society,” Max declared with conviction. “These defenseless individuals were taken captive. Forced to live lives of servitude, oppressed under Fred’s dictatorial regime. Cayden was horrified to uncover this dark secret, and he felt compelled to take action because he possesses a strong sense of justice.”
A stunned silence enveloped the council chamber. The elimination of slavery was a fundamental principle of werewolf society. Which regarded the practice as a heinous crime that must be abolished. The gravity of Max’s revelation hung in the air.
The shocking revelation of Alpha Fred’s involvement sent shockwaves through the hearts of the council members. Councillor Thalia, with a tone of scepticism in her voice, questioned Beta Max.
“How do we know these allegations are true, Beta Max?” she asked.
Max was calm and collected despite being acutely aware of the seriousness of the circumstance. “I want to reassure you, honoured members of the Council, that the evidence cannot be refuted. Cayden put his life on the line to collect evidence, and it is impossible to deny that the truth lies behind Alpha Fred’s actions. There are a great number of people involved, not just Alpha Fred.”
Max cast a pointed glance toward the council members, causing a gasp to ripple through the chamber. The news reverberated through their organisation. Causing members to question the integrity of their revered leaders.
Alpha Thalia’s authoritative voice broke the tension as she demanded, “Name them Beta Max.”
Taking a moment to gather his composure, Max continued, fully aware of the significance of his next words. “The mastermind behind this nefarious operation is the leader of the Silver River Pack, Alpha Hawk. He handles the slave trade, profiting from the torment of innocent beings. Furthermore, his greed has led to the annihilation of several smaller packs.”
Chaos erupted in the assembly room. Council members confronted each other, questioning loyalties and demanding answers. The council was divided, torn between their trust in Alpha Hawk and the possibility of his involvement in such heinous acts.
Suddenly, the large doors of the council chamber swung open, and a tall figure stepped forward. It was Alpha Hawk himself, his expression conveying both indignation and self-assurance. A deep and authoritative voice resounded throughout the room as the council grappled with the newly revealed information. “I heard my name being discussed. Beta Max, please explain the basis of this accusation.”
The presence of Alpha Hawk immediately commanded attention, plunging the room into an uneasy silence.
Meeting Hawk’s gaze unwaveringly, Max responded, “Alpha Hawk, I was not expecting you to be here,” his voice laced with coldness. “You know fully that I speak the truth, right?”
Hawk’s eyes narrowed, and his angry expression deepened. “This is utter madness! The members of my pack would never take part in such acts. Max, you are stretching the truth here, aren’t you?” Max stood resolute in his conviction.
“I can say with confidence, Alpha Hawk, that the evidence is compelling. We have witnesses who have evaded capture by your pack, and they can testify to the illegal activities carried out under your command.”
The council chamber was thick with tension. The council members leaned forward, their eyes darting between Max and Hawk, waiting for the situation to unfold. Hawk’s disdainful tone cut through the silence.
“If you accuse me, then I accuse Cayden! Selena, my daughter, was taken hostage by him. He was responsible for the death of her mate, Gerald, and he has held her captive.”
Shock washed over Max, his mind racing to make sense of this unexpected turn of events. The members of the council exchanged glances while maintaining expressions of uncertainty on their faces. The accusation hung thick in the air, making it difficult for Max to defend his position as the alpha. The volume of Max’s voice increased as his resolve remained unwavering.
“Selena is not held against her will; rather, she is Cayden’s mate and has voluntarily chosen to be bound to him. You are intentionally misleading people in order to divert attention away from your own wrongdoing, Hawk.” Max blurted out.
A sly smile curled on Hawk’s lips, his eyes glinting with calculation. “Mates? really? Do you truly believe that, Beta Max? Then let us summon Selena to this council and hear her testimony. Only then will the truth be revealed.”
The room where the council convened fell into a sudden and hushed silence. Max’s thoughts raced; his heartbeat quickened as he grappled with the decision before him. The outcome of this precarious proposition held immense weight, not only for Cayden and his pack, but for the very essence of truth itself.
“Why do you object, Beta Max? The council has the right to hear Selena’s testimony,” Magnus remarked with a smirk on his face.
However, Max’s attention was elsewhere, as his wolf suddenly became alert. He keenly sensed his alpha in his own mind. The tightening of their bond could only signify one thing—Cayden had recovered. A rush of relief and joy overwhelmed Max’s heart.
“Alright! my dear council members. I will ask my Alpha to bring Selena here. She will give her testimony.”
“Ha! you are again trying to delay the justice. Your Alpha is on his deathbed.” Hawk chuckled.
Max smiled. “You see, Alpha Hawk. By Luna’s grace, my alpha has recovered.” He thoroughly enjoyed the look of shock and disbelief on Hawk’s face.
