The Lies That Binds

Choices and Consequences

Ch. 146 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper sat on the edge of her bed that evening, staring out the window as the sun dipped below the horizon. The orange glow of twilight bathed the room in a warm light, but despite its calming beauty, Piper couldn’t quiet the storm brewing inside her. The confrontation at the café with Jasper and Noah had left her emotionally drained. The look in their eyes, the weight of their words — both men wanting her, both vying for her heart. It was too much.

She had been here before, stuck in the crosshairs of their competing affections, and she was tired of it. She wanted to be free of the emotional entanglements, the constant push and pull that kept her in a state of uncertainty. But how could she truly free herself when her feelings for both men ran so deep?

Piper sighed and stood up, pacing the room as her mind raced. She knew she had to make a decision soon. She couldn’t keep stringing them along, even if she didn’t mean to. They deserved answers, and she deserved clarity. But clarity was elusive, slipping through her fingers every time she thought she had a grasp on it.

She couldn’t deny the feelings she had for Gabriel either. He had been the one constant in this storm, always there to protect her and Lily, despite the darkness of his past. There was something about him that made her feel safe, even when the world around them was crumbling. But Gabriel came with his own set of complications, and the danger he brought into her life was still very real.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand, breaking her thoughts. Piper glanced at the screen — it was Gabriel.

Gabriel: Can we talk? I’m outside.

Piper’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t expected him to reach out tonight, not after the conversation they had earlier in the day. But there he was, waiting for her again, as he always seemed to be. Part of her wanted to ignore the message, to give herself more time to think, but she knew she couldn’t avoid him forever.

With a deep breath, Piper grabbed her jacket and headed downstairs. She opened the door to find Gabriel leaning against his car, his expression unreadable in the dim evening light. His presence, as always, was commanding, his tall frame casting long shadows across the driveway.

“Hey,” Piper said quietly, stepping outside.

“Hey.” Gabriel straightened up, his gaze locking onto hers. “I wasn’t sure if you’d want to see me.”

Piper folded her arms across her chest, unsure of how to respond. There was so much unspoken between them, so much that had been left unresolved. “I didn’t expect you to come by,” she admitted.

Gabriel took a step closer, his voice low and serious. “I couldn’t leave things the way they were earlier. I know I’ve brought a lot of chaos into your life, and I know you’re trying to find some peace. But I need you to know that I’m not going anywhere. Whatever happens, I’m here.”

Piper felt her chest tighten. His words were everything she wanted to hear, but they also filled her with dread. She didn’t know if she could handle another declaration of loyalty, another promise that things would be okay when nothing about her life felt stable.

“I appreciate that, Gabriel,” Piper said softly. “But I can’t keep doing this. I can’t keep living in this in-between, unsure of what’s coming next.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t look away. “You don’t have to be unsure about me.”

Piper’s heart raced as she took in his words. She knew Gabriel meant what he said, but could she really trust him? His past was a minefield of secrets and danger, and though he had proven himself time and time again, there was always the question of what might resurface next. Could she ever truly have a future with him when his world was so intertwined with the shadows?

“I need time, Gabriel,” Piper said, her voice wavering slightly. “I need to figure out what’s best for Lily and me. I can’t make any decisions until I know what my life is going to look like — without all the chaos.”

Gabriel stepped closer, his expression softening. “I get it, Piper. I do. And I’m not asking you to make any decisions tonight. But I need you to know that I’m not just another complication. I’m here to help, to protect you. I’m not going to let anyone hurt you.”

Piper looked up at him, her emotions a tangled mess of fear, gratitude, and longing. Gabriel had been her protector, her confidant, but could she let herself lean on him again when her heart was still so unsure?

Before she could respond, the sound of footsteps behind her made her turn around. Jasper stood at the edge of the driveway, his face a mix of surprise and frustration as he took in the scene before him.

“Jasper,” Piper breathed, her heart sinking.

“I didn’t mean to interrupt,” Jasper said, his voice tense. “But we need to talk, Piper. We didn’t finish our conversation earlier.”

Piper felt the weight of both men’s gazes on her, the tension between them thickening with each passing second. This was exactly what she had been trying to avoid — being caught between them, forced to choose before she was ready.

“Jasper, I —” Piper started, but he held up a hand, cutting her off.

“I know things are complicated,” Jasper said, his eyes flicking between her and Gabriel. “But I can’t just stand by and pretend like everything’s fine. I need to know where we stand.”

Piper’s pulse quickened as the air between them grew heavy with unresolved emotions. She hadn’t been ready for this confrontation, not tonight, not when everything felt so fragile. But here they were, and she couldn’t keep running from the truth.

“I don’t know where we stand, Jasper,” Piper admitted, her voice breaking. “I don’t know what I want right now. I just need time.”

Jasper’s face fell, the hurt in his eyes cutting through her like a knife. “Time,” he repeated, his voice laced with bitterness. “I’ve given you time, Piper. I’ve been waiting.”

Piper shook her head, tears threatening to spill over. “I didn’t ask you to wait.”

Jasper’s expression hardened. “Maybe not, but I did. And now... now I don’t know what to think. Seeing you with him...” He gestured to Gabriel, his frustration palpable. “It makes me wonder if I’ve been wasting my time.”

Gabriel stepped forward, his tone calm but firm. “This isn’t about me, Jasper. This is about Piper figuring out what she wants.”

Jasper shot him a look, the tension between them crackling like electricity. “You think I don’t know that? You think I don’t see what’s happening here?”

Piper felt her heart pounding in her chest, the pressure of their expectations crushing her from all sides. This was exactly what she had feared—that the unresolved feelings between them would spiral into something she couldn’t control.

“I can’t do this right now,” Piper said, her voice shaking. “I can’t make these decisions when everything feels so... chaotic.”

Gabriel’s gaze softened as he took a step back. “Then don’t. Take the time you need.”

Jasper’s frustration flared, but he didn’t push her. Instead, he nodded stiffly, the pain in his eyes breaking her heart. “Fine. But just know that I’m not going to wait forever, Piper.”

With that, Jasper turned and walked away, leaving Piper standing in the driveway, her emotions raw and exposed.

Gabriel stepped closer, his voice soft. “Piper, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for things to get like this.”

Piper shook her head, feeling the weight of the world pressing down on her. “It’s not your fault, Gabriel. It’s mine. I let things get too complicated.”

Gabriel reached for her hand, his touch gentle and grounding. “You don’t have to figure everything out tonight. Just... take your time. I’m not going anywhere.”

Piper looked up at him, her heart torn in a thousand directions. She didn’t know what her future held, but she knew one thing: she needed to find clarity for herself, before she could make any decisions about the men in her life.

“I need some space,” Piper whispered, her voice barely audible.

Gabriel’s face tightened, but he nodded, understanding in his eyes. “I get it. Take all the space you need.”

As Gabriel turned to leave, Piper stood alone in the driveway, the night air cool against her skin. She had asked for time, for space, but now that she had it, the uncertainty gnawed at her like a wound that wouldn’t heal.
