The morning sky was still dark, the first traces of dawn barely visible on the horizon as Piper sat at her kitchen table, her hands wrapped around a mug of lukewarm coffee. The house was quiet, the stillness only broken by the occasional sound of Lily stirring in her sleep upstairs. Piper’s mind, however, was far from quiet. Her thoughts were racing, consumed by the chaos that had invaded her life and the difficult decisions that now loomed ahead.
It had been a few days since the confrontation with Isabel, but the fallout of that betrayal still lingered. Piper’s trust in the people closest to her had been shattered, and even though she had put distance between herself and Jasper, the unresolved feelings still gnawed at her. And then there was Gabriel — always protective, always ready to sacrifice himself for her and Lily. But his past, the danger he was constantly facing, left her with a knot of fear that wouldn’t go away.
She took a sip of coffee, grimacing as the cold liquid hit her throat. There was no escaping the reality of her situation. The criminal organization that had torn through her life wasn’t finished, and now, Gabriel was squarely in their sights. As much as he tried to shield her from the details, she knew enough to understand that the threat was far from over. Marcus might be gone, but his organization was still out there — waiting, regrouping, planning.
A knock on the door pulled Piper from her thoughts. She frowned, glancing at the clock on the wall. It was barely 6 a.m. Who could possibly be here at this hour?
Her heart pounded as she stood up and moved toward the door. Instinctively, she glanced out the side window, her pulse racing when she saw Gabriel standing on the porch, his face etched with tension. He looked exhausted, his clothes rumpled and his eyes shadowed with worry. Without hesitation, she unlocked the door and opened it.
“Gabriel,” she breathed, surprised to see him.
He stepped inside quickly, glancing around as though checking for threats. “We need to talk,” he said, his voice low and urgent. “Now.”
Piper’s stomach twisted as she closed the door behind him. “What’s going on? Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Gabriel said, though his expression told her otherwise. “But things are getting worse. The criminal network — it’s not falling apart like we hoped. They’re regrouping, and they’re coming after anyone who stands in their way. That includes me.”
Piper’s heart sank as she watched the tension in his shoulders, the fear in his eyes. “Gabriel, what are you saying?”
He turned to face her, his eyes filled with a mixture of desperation and determination. “I’m saying that you need to get out of here, Piper. You and Lily. It’s not safe. I’ve already seen too many people get hurt, and I can’t... I can’t let that happen to you.”
Piper’s breath caught in her throat. “You want me to leave?”
Gabriel nodded, his jaw clenched. “Just for a little while. Until we can figure out how to dismantle the rest of the organization. It’s too dangerous here. They’re watching everyone connected to me. And you, Piper... you’re too close. They know who you are. They know about Lily.”
The gravity of his words hit her like a freight train. Her stomach twisted with fear at the thought of the danger closing in on them, but the idea of running away, of leaving everything behind, felt impossible.
“I can’t just leave,” Piper whispered, shaking her head. “My life is here. My business, our home... I won’t let them chase us out.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened, his eyes blazing with frustration. “This isn’t about pride, Piper. This is about your safety. I’m telling you, if you stay here, they will come after you. They will use you and Lily to get to me.”
Piper’s chest tightened, her mind spinning as she processed his words. The rational part of her knew he was right. The danger was real, and it was closing in faster than she had anticipated. But running? That wasn’t who she was. She had fought so hard to protect her life, her business, and her daughter. She couldn’t just walk away.
“I’m not running,” Piper said firmly, her voice stronger than she felt. “I’ve spent too much time hiding from the truth, from the threats around me. I’m not going to hide anymore. I won’t let them take my life from me.”
Gabriel stared at her, his jaw tightening in frustration. “Piper, this isn’t just about you. Lily —”
“I know,” Piper interrupted, her voice softening as she thought of her daughter. “I know I have to protect Lily. And I will. But running away isn’t the answer. I won’t live my life in fear. I can’t.”
Gabriel’s eyes softened as he looked at her, and for a moment, the tension between them eased. He reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “You’re braver than anyone I’ve ever known.”
Piper felt her heart tighten at his words, the depth of his admiration and care for her clear in his voice. But even as she held his gaze, she knew that their connection — however strong — couldn’t shield them from the reality of the danger they were facing.
“We need a plan,” she said quietly, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at her. “I’m not leaving, Gabriel. But if they’re coming for us, we need to be ready.”
Gabriel hesitated for a moment, then nodded, his expression resigned. “Okay,” he said, though there was a trace of reluctance in his voice. “But we have to be smart about this. They won’t hesitate to use force if they think it will get them what they want.”
Piper nodded, her mind already racing with possibilities. She knew she couldn’t face this threat alone, but she also knew that running wasn’t an option. They had to face the danger head-on.
“Jasper will help,” she said, her thoughts drifting to the man who had always been by her side, even through the worst of times. “We can trust him.”
Gabriel’s expression darkened slightly, but he didn’t argue. “Fine. But we need more than just Jasper. We need to know exactly what we’re up against.”
Piper’s heart pounded in her chest, but she nodded, determination settling over her. “Then let’s figure it out.”
The rest of the day passed in a blur of tense phone calls and frantic preparations. Piper called Jasper, explaining the situation in clipped, urgent tones. He didn’t hesitate — he was on his way before she even finished the call. But despite the growing team of allies around her, Piper couldn’t shake the gnawing sense of unease that settled in her chest.
She glanced at Lily, who was playing with her dolls in the living room, blissfully unaware of the storm gathering around them. Piper’s heart ached with the weight of the choices she had to make. How could she protect her daughter in a world that seemed determined to tear them apart?
By the time Jasper arrived, Gabriel had already begun laying out a plan for how they would secure the house, set up watch points, and coordinate communication if anything went wrong. The tension between him and Jasper was palpable, but Piper could see that both men were focused on one thing — keeping her and Lily safe.
Jasper sat across from Gabriel at the kitchen table, his expression grim. “How many people are we talking about? How big is this organization now that Marcus is gone?”
“Big enough,” Gabriel said, his voice flat. “There are cells spread out across the city. We managed to take down a major part of their operation, but it wasn’t enough to dismantle them completely. They’ll be sending more people soon. People who are more dangerous than the ones we’ve faced so far.”
Jasper swore under his breath, running a hand through his hair. “We need more firepower. We need to know who’s pulling the strings now that Marcus is out of the picture.”
Gabriel’s eyes darkened. “I’ve been trying to find out, but whoever’s in charge now is staying in the shadows. All we know is that they’re targeting anyone connected to me — and that includes Piper.”
Piper sat silently, her hands clenched in her lap. She had always been a fighter, but this was different. The stakes were higher now. The people she cared about most were in danger, and the decisions she made would determine whether they survived.
“We can’t just sit here and wait for them to come,” Piper said, her voice strong and clear. “We need to take the fight to them.”
Both men turned to look at her, surprise flashing in their eyes. But Piper stood firm, her heart pounding with the weight of her decision.
“I’m not going to hide,” she continued. “If they want to take everything from me, then I’m going to make sure they know exactly what they’re up against. We need to find out who’s behind this, and we need to stop them — once and for all.”
Gabriel’s gaze softened as he looked at her, a flicker of admiration crossing his face. Jasper, too, nodded in agreement, his expression resolute.
“All right,” Jasper said, standing up from the table. “We’re in this together.”
Piper felt a surge of determination as she stood with them, knowing that no matter what happened next, she wasn’t alone in this fight. Together, they would face the threat head-on.
And this time, they wouldn’t back down.
