Avalon approached Bella with a calm but resolute demeanor, her golden eyes steady as they locked onto Bella’s conflicted expression. The tension between them had grown ever since the confrontation, and Bella’s avoidance hadn’t gone unnoticed. Avalon knew they needed to clear the air if there was to be any hope of progress.
“Bella,” Avalon began, her voice firm but not unkind, “we need to talk.”
Bella paused, clearly reluctant but too curious to walk away. She crossed her arms defensively, her hybrid strength making the simple movement seem like a statement of dominance. “What is it now, Avalon? Here to lecture me again?”
Avalon shook her head, her long silver hair swaying slightly with the movement. “No, I’m here to offer a truce.”
Bella blinked, caught off guard. Of all the things she expected Avalon to say, this wasn’t one of them. “A truce?” she repeated skeptically. “Why would I need a truce with you?”
“Because,” Avalon said, stepping closer, “this tension between us is doing more harm than good. You’re trying to figure out who you are, and I’m here to help. That’s the only reason I stayed. I’m not your enemy.”
Bella studied her, searching for any trace of insincerity in Avalon’s words. The hybrid woman radiated confidence, but beneath it, there was a vulnerability Bella hadn’t noticed before. “You’re not my enemy,” Bella said slowly, “but you’re also not my friend.”
Avalon didn’t flinch. “Fair enough,” she said, her tone even. “But whether you like me or not, we’re stuck with each other. You need someone who understands what you’re going through, Bella. I’ve been where you are—lost, confused, and unsure of who I could trust.”
Bella’s posture softened slightly, though the wariness in her eyes remained. “If you’ve been through it, then you should know how hard this is for me. Every time I think I’m making progress, something happens that throws me back into chaos.”
“I do know,” Avalon said, her voice quieter now. “That’s why I’m offering this truce. I’m not trying to take anything from you—not Kael, not your identity, not your place in this pack. I’m just here to help you find yourself again.”
Bella hesitated, her conflicting emotions bubbling to the surface. Avalon’s words rang true, but there was still a part of her that didn’t trust the woman fully. Perhaps it was jealousy, or maybe it was the lingering uncertainty of her own mind. She finally nodded, though her stance remained cautious. “Fine. A truce. But I’m not making any promises.”
“That’s all I ask,” Avalon said, a faint smile playing on her lips. “We don’t have to be friends. We just have to get you back to being the woman you were meant to be.”
Bella exhaled, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. She didn’t fully trust Avalon, but she could admit that the woman’s guidance had been invaluable so far. As much as she wanted to figure everything out on her own, the truth was that she needed help—and Avalon was the best person to provide it.
As Bella turned to leave, Avalon’s gaze lingered on her retreating form. The resolve in Bella’s steps, the way her hybrid energy seemed to radiate around her—it was clear she was powerful, perhaps more than she even realized. But it wasn’t Bella’s strength that made Avalon’s chest tighten. It was the fact that Kael’s unwavering devotion had always been for Bella, and Bella alone.
Once Bella was out of earshot, Avalon muttered under her breath, her voice laced with quiet longing, “If only he saw me the way he sees you.”
The words hung in the air, unheard by anyone but Avalon herself. She clenched her fists, willing the thought away. This wasn’t about her. It never had been. But no matter how much she tried to suppress her feelings, they lingered like a shadow—a painful reminder of what she couldn’t have.
Back at the packhouse, Kael waited anxiously for Bella’s return. His connection to her, though strained, still pulled at him like an invisible thread. When Bella walked in, her expression was unreadable, but there was a subtle shift in her demeanor. Kael noticed it immediately.
“How did it go?” he asked, his voice hesitant.
Bella shrugged, avoiding his gaze. “She wants a truce. Says she’s only here to help me.”
Kael nodded slowly, relief mingling with his own doubts. “That’s good, right? You need someone like her.”
Bella’s lips tightened. “I don’t know if I can trust her completely, but… I’ll keep working with her. For now.”
Kael reached for her hand, but she pulled away, the motion instinctive rather than deliberate. His chest tightened, but he didn’t push. “I just want what’s best for you, Bella. Whatever it takes.”
