It was at moment like this that I regretted my decision to live a life without having any friends.
I was bored.
I had been indoors for weeks and I could not make friends with the maids.
Dad had taught me that you should never be close friends to the people who worked for you but that didn’t mean you had to treat them badly. I know many people would disagree but it had made life efficient for me and Dad.
It had been almost a week since I had the dining argument with my husband and we haven’t seen each other since then. I didn’t even know if he was still living in the house.
It was as though he was avoiding me or that’s what I kept telling myself but I knew deep down, it was the other way around.
I was still pissed at him so I didn’t want to see him in case I was unable to control myself and tell him things that I would regret later on.
When I woke up this morning, I planned to do some outdoor activities but I came up with zero places I would love to visit.
“You live one hell of a boring life, Hazel” I sighed in frustration.
I was tired of doing the same thing every day, eating and then sleeping. It had become my new habit. I was considering getting a Job but I quickly discarded that thought because I knew it wouldn’t be allowed.
Since I had nothing to do, I resolved to listen to music on my phone and scroll through my Instagram feed. I guess I could say I was popular with over 24 million followers but it was just a fun page, I didn’t have a social media manager since all I did was post personal stuff there but I was very sure my dad had someone monitor the account to make sure I didn’t post the wrong thing.
I opened the camera app to check my reflection but the view from the camera was too stunning. I had to take a photo. I was lying on the bed and my hair was sprawled around my head messily but it made me look like I had just woken up and I really looked beautiful, not to be a narcissist or anything.
“Oh shit” I exclaimed as soon as I saw the comments flood in seconds after I posted the photo. No one knew I was married yet and people had managed to see that the space around me was different so a lot of comments were asking where I was. I turned off the comments sections instead of answering.
I logged out of the app immediately. The music that was currently playing was one of my favorites and soon I found myself getting up from the bed and moving to the beat of the song. I was a sucker for songs that made me feel sexy, it was honestly enthralling.
I didn’t know how long I had that song on repeat and how long I spent dancing but the sight of a car pulling up to the front had me stopping in my tracks.
That was Atticus' car, I knew because my room was situated in the part of the house where I could see who came and went from my window since it was facing the front of the house.
I stopped dancing and moved to the curtains to watch him. This time, unlike the other times I had seen him come back from work, he was with someone.
A lady.
I watched from a hidden place behind the curtains as he opened her door for her.
I didn’t like the way she clung to him like a parasite as soon as she got out of the car. She attached herself to his side and was laughing at whatever he was saying. The nerve of her to hold on to my husband like that.
I saw him look up but I made no effort to move because I knew there was no way he would be able to see me behind the dark curtains. He may have looked up because he felt my eyes on me and may probably guess that I was watching.
He may not look amused by whatever she was saying, but that didn’t stop him from wrapping his hands around her waist and leading her inside.
If you asked me why I was behaving like this after my promise to not care about anything he does, I wouldn’t be able to give you any response. Atticus' room was located opposite mine and I had a gut feeling that they would be heading that way.
I scrambled to my door and planted my ears against it to listen for any sound. I was going to give up and walk back to my bed when I heard the irritating laughter that was obviously coming from the parasite clinging to my husband.
I wonder if she knew that he was married. I always made sure not to get entangled with married guys because I always thought that if I did that, my own husband would cheat on me but it seems all those were just fantasy wishes
“Is your wife at home?” The annoying voice asked. So she was aware that he was married but still decided to follow him home.
“I believe she should be. She hardly goes anywhere from what I’m told” He replied.
It felt like they were standing in front of his door, purposely making that conversation with the intention of making sure it hurt.
“I’ve seen her photos, she is kind of pretty but not more than me though. I can see why you married her, she is a good arm candy” this woman who didn’t even know me snarkily replied.
I had to hold myself back from flinging the door wide open and marching towards her to pull her hair so hard, it would come off from the roots.
How dare she talk about me so openly and confidently in my own house and very much aware that I could probably hear every word she uttered out of her cursed mouth?
Was this how I was going to live the rest of my life? I didn’t sign up for a faithful husband but I sure as hell didn’t sign up to get insulted by the sluts he brought home and I would be talking to him about that.
“She is pretty, I guess,” He told her and I scoffed in disbelief. So he was going to watch and listen as a side piece talked trash of me in front of him?
He really was the devil.
The woman he was with laughed out loud which was totally unnecessary and then it was quiet.
I thought they had entered the room or found their way down the hall to another room but an over-exaggerated moan told me otherwise. I listened more carefully and I could hear the disgusting sound of kissing.
The woman or girl kept making annoying moans which I knew was definitely fake. She probably suspected that I was in there and wanted to show me that she was the one in my husband’s bed.
“Oh god, I’ve missed your mouth Atty. It’s been too long” She moaned out loud and I could not prevent the stabbing pain that went through my chest.
The way she talked made me realize that she may have been fucking him for some time now, even before we got married.
This meant that she had been in his life longer than I had been and was not just a random girl he picked on the road or in a club. This was worse because it meant she was going nowhere anytime soon.
I was relieved that Atticus didn’t say anything to her but instead, I heard the sound of a door being opened and shut. I couldn’t hear them as loudly as I did before so they must have entered his room.
I looked out the window and it was already pretty late so the lady might even stay the night.
Thankfully, I already had dinner before they came so I would stay in my room till tomorrow so I don’t have to encounter either of them.
I moved away from the door to lay on my bed. I cannot believe what I have been reduced to, hiding from my husband and his mistress in a house that is supposed to be mine. Was that how it was for other people who had arranged marriages too?
They were at it all night. I almost ripped my ears out from the moans and the grunts that were escaping the room. My husband sounded like a sex-starved man who was finally getting the kind of sex he wanted and it felt like a slap to the face at how they had no regard for me and were moaning like wild animals.
When I couldn’t bear to listen to them anymore, I plugged in my earphones and clicked on the first playlist that popped up on my Apple Music.
I didn’t even know any of the songs being played and that didn’t matter because I wasn’t really listening to the song, I just needed something to make sure I didn’t hear whatever it was they were doing.
I didn’t know how long I spent looking at the ceiling, allowing my mind to wander through different thoughts before sleep finally dragged me away.
