“What are you thinking about?” Atticus’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts.
I looked at him long and hard and tried to figure out why he didn’t look like a cheater. As
handsome and respectable as the man was, it didn’t change the fact that he was a cheating bastard.
“Nothing. Focus on your work and don’t mind me” I told him and turned over in my seat. I was in his office again and not the one at home, the real one.
He had been surprised to see me in his office, especially carrying a lunch box and I was pleased to see he had his head buried in between files and not between another woman’s legs.
Oddly enough, he had been indulging me these few days and I didn’t know what to make of it. He allowed me to do whatever I pleased and actually answered my questions during dinner. He was also not frowning when I barged into his office unannounced.
“When will you be heading home? It’s getting late” I had my back to him on the couch so I had no way of telling if he was happy or not and I didn’t want to find out so I just pretended like I didn’t hear him.
“I know you heard me. You aren’t that far away” He pointed out.
“I know that but I don’t want to answer you again. I already told you we would go home together and there is nothing you can do to change my mind” It was already dark outside and he had been insisting I go home since he would be late but I refused.
“I’m sure that couch isn’t too comfortable” He tried to reason but there was no way I was going to let him persuade me into leaving him behind.
I knew deep down I was just scared that he would leave me and go somewhere else and that someone was Samantha. After what happened recently, I didn’t think my ego could suffer another blow.
“On the contrary, the couch is really comfy, I could literally sleep here all day. It’s almost better than my bed” And I wasn’t lying at all.
The couch was really soft, unlike those uncomfortable leather that made noise with every move you made. This was obviously expensive and worth it.
“I don’t believe you but have it your way. I hope you know we’ll be here for a while. Are you hungry? Should I ask Nathan to get you dinner?” See what I meant? He had been indulging me recently and I was eating it up even though I knew that this didn’t mean he was completely mine yet.
“Why are you in such a hurry for me to go home? Are you going somewhere else?” I knew he understood the hidden meaning behind my question.
“You didn’t answer my question. Do you need them to get you dinner?” He asked me again cleverly avoiding the question at hand. I rolled my eyes at his insistence and stood up so I could look at him.
“I wasn’t avoiding the question. I just had a much more important one. You are the one avoiding mine?”
“You are trying to turn this on me and it won’t work”
“Says who? You’re delusional”
He looked pretty irritated but pressed no further and continued what he was doing.
“On second thought, I’m hungry. Let’s eat pizza, I’m craving some “ Like I suspected, his brows
furrowed in annoyance and I couldn’t help but giggle at the reaction.
“You’re doing this to piss me off, aren’t you?”
“Why would I do such a thing?” I asked with my eyes round just like an innocent puppy.
“What toppings?”
“Any would do. I don’t have a choice”
He called Nathan and asked him to get it while I made myself comfortable on the couch once again
The pizza didn’t take long to arrive and I dragged Atticus from his table to join me. He grumbled all through the meal but I was happy nonetheless.
He didn’t eat much and went back to the table saying something about how he needed to finish his work so we could go home on time.
This time, I let him work without disturbing him so we could get home quickly because I also was not comfortable with being out so late.
I’m sure I slept off at one point because I suddenly felt myself being lifted up into someone’s arms.
I opened my eyes a little and came faced with Atticus’ suit so he was the one carrying me. Though I was sleepy, I hadn’t slept too deep that I would be unable to walk yet I made no move to show I was awake.
There was no way I was going to let this golden moment pass me by just like that so I snuggled deeper into his arms.
It was as though I was custom-made for him and he was for me. I fit perfectly into his arms and he walked as though he was not carrying me in his arms.
Those strong arms that held me as he walked towards the elevator made me feel safe and secure. I tried not to imagine other things these hands could do.
I had to focus on pretending I was asleep. When we got to the car, he gently placed me on the seat and I felt something placed over me. His suit Jacket.
“Hazel, he is just doing this to be courteous” I tried to tell my heart but I doubt it was listening to me. I allowed him to get in before pretending to drop my head onto his shoulders.
I made sure not to tense up so he wouldn’t discover I was awake but in my head, I held my breath to see what he would do.
I expected him to move my head but he didn’t. Instead, he sat a little bit closer so I would be more comfortable. How did he expect me not to get hopeful if he acted like this?
I must have fallen asleep again because the next thing I know, I’m being placed on my bed.
My breath hitched as he lingered a bit over my body. He was so close I could feel his breath over my face.
My heart stopped beating as I waited to see what he would do. You could hear every single night animal by how quiet it was.
“Fuck” he swore. I heard his retreating footsteps and then the door closed behind him.
My eyes flew open and my heart was beating crazily in my chest.
What was that?
