Eliza’s POV
The disdainful looks and snide comments from Caia only seemed to intensify. The beautiful redhead did not attempt to veil her dislike for me, glaring venomously whenever I entered the same space. She reminded me of Daniella and Tricia, and they would certainly get along well.
At first, I tried to ignore her childish antagonism, focusing instead on bonding with Maya, Nisha, Zara and the other pack members who had welcomed me warmly. But Caia's burning resentment was like a stubborn spark that steadily ignited a raging fire of bitterness between us.
“I am so grateful to Alpha Theron for letting me be here, but Caia seems to hate me,” I said, glancing over at her as she threw me a dagger look.
“Oh, her. Don't take it personally," Maya had said with a dismissive roll of her eyes. "Caia has always possessed an inflated sense of entitlement. She sees you as a threat to her delusions of being the most exalted female in our ranks."
"The audacity of this...White Wolf thinking she can insert herself among seasoned warriors," Caia sneered as he made her way towards us. "Her fighting techniques are probably sloppy, unrefined. She doesn't belong here. What was our alpha thinking.”
A chorus of dismayed murmurs rose from the gathered crowd at her blatant disrespect, but I could see the gleam of vindication in Caia's frosty green eyes as she levelled a contemptuous glare at me.
"Is that so?" A rich, melodic voice cut through the sudden tension - Nisha's lithe form slinking through the crowd to stand at my side. "If memory serves, you haven't been besting our most skilled warriors in combat for weeks now. How do you know how Eliza plays out on training?”
A flush crept up Caia's neck as Nisha regarded her coolly, emerald eyes glittering with veiled menace.
"Need I remind you who oversees the training assessments, little wolf?" Nisha all but purred, her tone mild but carrying a clear undercurrent of threat. "Or has your irrational jealousy clouded your memory and judgment? Perhaps you would like to repeat this information in front of our alpha himself?”
Caia opened her mouth - undoubtedly to snap off an indignant retort - but seemed to think better of it at the last moment, pressing her lips into a petulant moue of displeasure.
"That's what I thought," Nisha murmured so only we could hear. A slight, satisfied smirk played about her complete lips. "Carry on making hollow judgments at your peril, Caia. The only one diminishing her honour and integrity is you."
With that subtle dress-down, Nisha and Maya both turned and sauntered off. I was left standing alone with someone who hated to share the same oxygen with me.
Caia, however, looked utterly humiliated as the gathered crowd gradually dispersed, whispering and casting her furtive, almost pitying looks. Her pretty face was contorted into an ugly mask of rage and wounded pride.
At that moment, I very nearly felt a pang of remorse for her...until Caia suddenly whirled on me, emerald eyes blazing with venom.
"This isn't over, you insufferable pretender," she bit out in a heated undertone as she advanced on me. A vein in her slender neck strained with the force of her ire. "I don't care how pale your worthless fur is - you'll never be more than a pathetic outsider fumbling to be part of something that should be mine by birthright."
Refusing to be intimidated by her venomous outburst, I lifted my chin and met Caia's smouldering glare steadily. "I don't pretend to do anything, Caia," I replied, keeping my voice maddeningly calm and even. “You don't know me.”
"We'll see how capable you truly are when I put your half-baked fighting skills to the test," she spat, eyes glittering with malice. "I challenge you to a formal grudge match, wolf against a wolf.”
A shocked murmur rippled through the crowd at Caia's daring provocation. Formal grudge matches between packmates were rare and only permitted with the Alpha's blessing. To instigate such a primal battle was a serious matter that brought our animalistic natures to the fore.
I could feel the electric tension crackling as Caia stared me down, her lips peeled back in a feral snarl. Part of me wanted to disagree, to take the pacifistic path and defuse the confrontation. But Jasmine's presence thrummed with an odd sort of eager approval at Caia's challenge.
'Do not back down from this, Eliza,' her spiritual voice rumbled within me. 'The vicious she-wolf has instigated a test of dominance that cannot be ignored lest you lose face before the entirety of your new packmates.'
Squaring my shoulders, I met Caia's smouldering glare head-on - tapping into that well of feral confidence and bold intensity that deeply unnerved my cruel tormentors from the Creek pack.
"Very well, Caia," I said, allowing just a hint of a growl to bleed into my tone. "If it's a true assessment of capability you desire, you'll have it. No mercy given, no quarter asked."
An almost satisfied glint entered Caia's eyes at my ready acceptance of her challenge. She had expected me to baulk or diffuse the situation. But I would not be cowed before this pompous subordinate wolf. Not anymore.
"So be it," she hissed, spit flying as her lips contorted in a vicious snarl. "I hope you've made peace with the inevitability of complete humiliation before your precious new 'family', outsider."
A tremor of anxiety tried to worm its way into my gut at the sight of her - all rippling muscle and predatory movements.
'Have no fear, Eliza,' Jasmine's calming timbre washed over me. 'Let the power of your spirit rise to the fore. She cannot harm you while I am here.'
Bolstered by her familial reassurances, I allowed the familiar, exhilarating burn of my transformation to overtake me, my mortal shape rapidly reshaping into that of a lean, powerful wolf. My fur glistened like luminescent ivory, and I could feel Jasmine's essence thrumming alongside my consciousness.
Caia immediately reacted to my presence, her lips peeling back from wickedly sharp fangs in a menacing snarl. I responded kindly, allowing the wolf's instincts to rise and meet her aggression head-on.
Our audience watched in a breathless hush as we slowly circled each other, looking for any exploitable opening or lapse. Caia feinted first, lunging forward with a blistering speed that I narrowly managed to counter.
Our bodies collided like two furry freight trains, all teeth and claws and explosive power as we grappled and clashed relentlessly. When one of us seemed to gain the upper hand, the tide would shift with a well-timed strike or takedown.
Back and forth, the violent duel raged without pause until we were both streaked with sweat, blood and dirt from our continuous impacts. The gnawing ache of countless nips and scratches fueled my feral determination further.
With a bone-jarring impact, I managed to catch Caia with a devastating body blow, causing her to stagger back several paces. A flicker of uncertainty entered her emerald gaze as she panted heavily, realising how evenly matched we were.
In that split-second of hesitation, I sensed my opening and reacted on pure predatory instinct. Gathering every ounce of momentum, I launched myself at Caia's exposed flank, my jaws going for her throat like a heat-seeking missile.
But at the last possible moment, she twisted away with that same insane agility that made her such a deadly opponent. My teeth sank into the meat of her powerful shoulder instead of their intended target.
Caia howled in rage and agony, renewing her assault with almost desperate intensity. Now, it was my turn to be driven back, inch by inch, as I struggled to maintain my defensive footing.
"What is the meaning of this unnecessary violence between packmates?" The Alpha's thunderous voice boomed through the clearing, his words laced with a clear undertone of menace.
Before either Caia or I could respond, a tawny form slunk out of the crowd to stand at the Alpha's side - Nisha, her emerald eyes gleaming with a mixture of curiosity and disapproval as she surveyed the brutal aftermath of our brawl.
"It seems our newest member and Caia engaged in a bit of..." Her lip curled in distaste as she carefully chose her following words, "unsanctioned dominance sparring under the moon, Alpha."
Disapproval rolled off Theron in waves as he turned his scorching amber glare on me. "Is this how you repay the sanctuary and trust I offered you, White Wolf? By descending into petty bloodlust against your own family?"
My heart clenched with shame and regret under the alpha's searing censure. In the haze of battle frenzy, I had allowed the feral parts of my nature to take over with reckless abandon.
"Well?" Theron demanded gruffly when neither Caia nor I offered any explanation. "I'm listening..."
Caia finally spoke up, her voice carrying the barest shiver of trepidation.
"Forgive me, Alpha," she murmured, shifting her weight in unease. "I allowed jealousy over Eliza's... talents to cloud my judgment. I challenged her to a grudge match to reassert my dominance."
The clearing seemed suspended in tense silence as Theron absorbed her admission. I could practically see the muscle twitching along his powerful jaw as he struggled to maintain an outward veneer of stoic control.
"Did you expect me to sanction such a display for your petty ego, Caia?" The words dripped with arctic disdain. "We are better than mere beasts ruled by territorial lust for power. Or have you forgotten the civilised ways I have instilled in this pack?"
Caia visibly flinched, though I suspected it was more from the verbal lashing than genuine remorse for her callous motivations. The Alpha's wrath was not something to be trifled with.
"As for you..." Theron swung his piercing gaze back toward me, and I tensed – waiting for the admonishment that was indeed to follow. "I had expected more prudence and restraint from one as spiritually in tune as yourself, Eliza. Giving in to such base impulses brings shame to your wolf spirit."
