The Lies That Binds

Everything at Stake

Ch. 82 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper sat at her desk, staring at the papers scattered in front of her, but none of the words registered. Her business — the company she had built with her own hands — felt like it was slipping through her fingers. It was no longer about profit margins or contracts. Her business had become a battleground, a target for a criminal organization determined to use her as leverage. And now, after weeks of threats and mounting danger, Piper knew the next attack wasn’t just coming — it was already in motion.

Her phone buzzed on the edge of the desk, the sudden vibration snapping her out of her thoughts. She picked it up, her heart sinking when she saw the message from her assistant, Maddie.

Maddie: Piper, we’ve got a problem. There’s been an attack at the distribution center.

Piper’s stomach twisted, a sick feeling rising in her chest. She shot up from her chair, grabbing her bag and rushing out of the office, her mind racing with worst-case scenarios. This was exactly what she had feared — Marcus Green and his organization were no longer making idle threats. They were striking at the heart of her business, determined to destroy everything she had built.

The drive to the distribution center felt like an eternity. The streets blurred around her as she navigated through traffic, her hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles turned white. She could feel the panic rising inside her, but she forced it down. She had to stay calm. She couldn’t let the fear take over. Not now.

When she arrived, the scene was worse than she had imagined. Smoke billowed from the warehouse, the air thick with the acrid smell of burning materials. Employees stood huddled outside, their faces pale with shock, and the flashing lights of emergency vehicles lit up the parking lot like a war zone.

Piper jumped out of the car and rushed toward Maddie, who stood at the edge of the crowd, her eyes wide with fear.

“Maddie, what happened?” Piper asked, her voice tight with worry.

Maddie shook her head, her hands trembling. “It was all so fast. I–I don’t know. There was a break-in, and then a fire. They torched everything, Piper. Everything.”

Piper’s heart sank. This wasn’t just an accident. It was deliberate. Marcus’s men had come, and they had made their move.

“Was anyone hurt?” Piper asked, her eyes scanning the crowd.

“No, thank God,” Maddie replied, her voice shaky. “But the damage... It is bad, Piper. Really bad.”

Piper clenched her jaw, trying to steady herself. She had been bracing for something like this, but seeing the destruction firsthand made it all too real. The criminal organization wasn’t just sending a message — they were trying to ruin her, piece by piece.

“Go home, Maddie,” Piper said gently, placing a hand on her assistant’s shoulder. “I’ll handle things from here.”

Maddie nodded, her relief palpable as she quickly made her way to her car. Piper turned back to the warehouse, her eyes narrowing as the flames flickered in the distance. She could feel the anger bubbling inside her, the helplessness turning into a sharp, focused rage.

She couldn’t wait any longer. She had to act.

Her phone buzzed again, pulling her attention back to the screen. It was a message from Gabriel.

Gabriel: I’m going to end this, Piper. Don’t try to stop me.

Piper’s breath caught in her throat. Gabriel had been distant lately, pulling away after everything that had come to light about his involvement with the criminal organization. But this message — this felt like something more. Something final.

Her fingers flew over the screen as she typed a quick reply.

Me: What are you talking about? Gabriel, don’t do anything reckless.

But no response came.

Piper felt a surge of panic. She knew Gabriel well enough to understand what he meant. He was going to take matters into his own hands, even if it meant risking his life. He had always been protective of her, even when he had kept things from her, and now, it seemed like he was willing to make a dangerous move to put an end to the threat once and for all.

She couldn’t let him do this alone.

Without thinking, Piper turned back to her car and sped off, her thoughts racing. She needed to find Gabriel, to stop him before he made a mistake he couldn’t come back from. She had lost control of so much in her life, but she couldn’t lose Gabriel too. Not like this.

Piper’s search for Gabriel led her to a dingy bar on the outskirts of the city, a place she had only heard about in whispers. The kind of place where dangerous deals were made in the shadows, and where men like Marcus Green operated without fear of consequence. She pulled into the parking lot, her hands shaking as she gripped the steering wheel.

She was scared. More scared than she had ever been. But she had to keep moving. Gabriel’s life could be at risk, and she wasn’t going to let him throw it away.

The bar was dimly lit, the stale smell of smoke and alcohol filling the air as she stepped inside. Her eyes scanned the room, searching for any sign of Gabriel. She saw a few men hunched over their drinks, their eyes flicking toward her with mild curiosity, but no one stood out. No one looked like him.

She was about to turn around when a voice called her name.

“Piper.”

She spun around and saw Gabriel standing in the back of the bar, his face shadowed in the low light. He looked tired, worn down by the weight of everything that had happened. But there was something else in his eyes — something determined, resolute.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Gabriel said, stepping closer. “It’s too dangerous.”

Piper shook her head, her voice firm. “I’m not leaving until you tell me what you’re doing.”

Gabriel sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I’m ending this, Piper. I’m going after Marcus. I’ve spent years working against him, trying to take him down from the inside, but I’ve been too careful. I’ve played it safe, and now you’re in danger because of it.”

“And you think going rogue is the answer?” Piper snapped, her frustration boiling over. “What happens if you get yourself killed? What then? You think that’ll solve anything?”

Gabriel’s expression softened, but the determination didn’t fade. “I can’t sit back and watch while Marcus tears your life apart. I have to do something.”

Piper stepped closer, her voice pleading. “There has to be another way. We can go to the authorities, we can figure this out together. But don’t do this alone, Gabriel. Please.”

For a moment, Gabriel hesitated. She could see the conflict in his eyes, the part of him that wanted to stay, to protect her, fighting against the part of him that felt responsible for everything that had happened. But then, his jaw tightened, and she knew he had made up his mind.

“I have to finish this,” Gabriel said quietly. “It’s the only way to keep you safe.”

Piper’s chest tightened, her heart pounding. She didn’t know what to say, how to convince him. She had already lost so much, and the thought of losing Gabriel, too, was unbearable.

But before she could respond, the door to the bar swung open with a loud bang, and Piper turned to see Noah standing in the doorway, his eyes wild with urgency.

“We need to leave,” Noah said, his voice sharp. “Now.”

Piper’s heart sank. “What? Why? What’s going on?”

Noah strode over to them, glancing nervously around the bar. “Marcus’s men know you’re here. They’re coming for you, Piper. They’re not going to stop until they get what they want.”

Piper felt the blood drain from her face. “How do you know?”

Noah hesitated for a moment, his eyes flicking to Gabriel before turning back to her. “Because I was the one who tipped them off.”

The words hit Piper like a punch to the gut. She stumbled back, her mind spinning as the realization sank in.

Noah had betrayed her. Again.

“You...” Piper’s voice cracked as she struggled to process what he had just said. “You led them to me? You —”

“I didn’t have a choice,” Noah interrupted, his voice desperate. “They were going to kill me, Piper. I thought I could buy us more time, but now —”

“You thought you could buy yourself more time,” Gabriel growled, stepping toward him, his fists clenched. “You sold Piper out to save your own skin.”

Noah flinched, but he didn’t deny it. “I didn’t know they’d act this fast.”

Piper’s heart shattered, the betrayal cutting deeper than she could have imagined. She had given Noah chance after chance, even when she knew she shouldn’t have, and now this — this final act of treachery — felt like the ultimate betrayal.

“I trusted you,” Piper whispered, her voice filled with disbelief. “After everything, I still gave you the benefit of the doubt, and this is how you repay me?”

Noah took a step toward her, his hands raised in a gesture of surrender. “I’m trying to fix it, Piper. I’m going to help you, I swear —”

“Enough,” Gabriel said, his voice cold and sharp. He moved between Piper and Noah, his eyes blazing with fury. “You’re done, Noah. You don’t get to play the hero anymore.”

Before anyone could say another word, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed outside the bar. Piper’s heart raced, the panic rising inside her. They were out of time.

“We need to go,” Gabriel said, grabbing Piper’s hand and pulling her toward the back exit. “Now.”

Piper followed him, her mind still reeling from the shock of Noah’s betrayal. As they fled into the night, the weight of everything crashed down on her. She had trusted the wrong people. She had believed the lies.

And now, it was all falling apart.
