The Lies That Binds

The Weight of Choices

Ch. 88 / 200 Jun 22, 2025

Piper sat by the window in the hospital room, her gaze drifting over the darkened parking lot outside. The room was bathed in the faint glow of the city lights, casting long shadows on the sterile walls. Gabriel lay in the bed behind her, his breathing steady but shallow as he slept off the effects of the surgery. The beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound that filled the silence between them, a constant reminder of how close he had come to death.

Her thoughts were a tangled web of fear, guilt, and uncertainty. The battle against Marcus had left them scarred — not just physically but emotionally. Her business was on the verge of collapse, the warehouse explosion had crippled her financially, and with the criminal organization still lurking in the shadows, the threat to her life and Lily's safety loomed larger than ever. But that wasn't the only battle she was fighting.

Her heart was divided, torn between the men who had each played pivotal roles in her life. Gabriel, lying in the bed before her, had risked everything to protect her and Lily. His sacrifice, his unwavering commitment, had solidified their connection in ways she hadn’t fully realized until now. But then there was Jasper, who had been by her side from the very beginning, long before Gabriel had entered the picture. Despite the tension between them, Jasper had never wavered in his support for her, even when their relationship had fractured.

And Noah... Noah had caused so much pain, yet there was a time when she had loved him too deeply. He was Lily's father, and no matter what he had done, no matter the lies and deception, she couldn't completely erase the memories of their time together.

The weight of those relationships pressed down on her, and Piper knew that whatever decision she made would alter the course of her life. But right now, she wasn’t sure what her heart truly wanted. All she knew was that the pressure of choosing was crushing her.

A soft groan from the bed broke through her thoughts, pulling her back to the present. She turned to see Gabriel stirring, his face pale but conscious. His eyes fluttered open, and he looked around, disoriented for a moment before his gaze landed on her.

“Piper...” His voice was weak, but the relief in his eyes was unmistakable.

She rushed to his side, her heart pounding as she took his hand. “I’m here,” she whispered, her throat tight with emotion. “You’re okay.”

Gabriel winced as he shifted slightly, his hand gripping hers tightly. “I’m... alive, thanks to you.”

Piper shook her head, her eyes filling with unshed tears. “Don’t say that. You’re the one who risked everything to save us.”

“I’d do it again,” he said softly, his voice hoarse. “For you and Lily. Always.”

The sincerity in his words wrapped around her heart like a vice, and for a moment, Piper forgot about the uncertainty that had been clouding her mind. Gabriel had always been there when it mattered most, and despite the darkness of his past, he had proven time and again that he was willing to fight for her, to protect her, no matter the cost.

“Get some rest,” Piper whispered, gently brushing the hair from his forehead. “You need to recover.”

Gabriel’s eyes flickered with exhaustion, but before he drifted back to sleep, he whispered, “I won’t let them hurt you again.”

As his breathing evened out, Piper remained by his side, her mind once again consumed by the enormity of the decision before her. Gabriel had shown her a kind of devotion that she hadn’t expected, but what did that mean for her feelings for Jasper? And what about Noah, who was still out there, tangled in the mess he had created?

The next morning, Piper was back at her office, though it no longer felt like the safe haven it once was. The windows had been repaired, and the smoke damage from the explosion had been scrubbed away, but the lingering smell of burnt wood and fear clung to the air. It was a reminder of just how fragile her world had become.

Financial reports lay scattered across her desk, and the numbers were grim. Her business had been devastated by the attack, and while she’d managed to keep things afloat for now, the road to recovery seemed impossibly long. Investors were pulling out, clients were hesitant, and every step forward felt like two steps back.

Piper buried her face in her hands, exhaustion creeping in. How had everything gotten so out of control?

A knock on the door startled her, and she looked up to see Jasper standing in the doorway. He looked as tired as she felt, his face drawn with worry and tension. He stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

“How’s Gabriel?” he asked, his voice quiet.

“He’s recovering,” Piper replied, her voice equally soft. “The surgery went well, but he’s still weak.”

Jasper nodded, his hands shoved into his pockets. “Good. He’s tough. He’ll pull through.”

They stood in silence for a moment, the unspoken tension between them heavy in the air. Piper knew that Jasper had always been wary of Gabriel, but now, after everything that had happened, the rivalry between them felt more palpable than ever.

“Piper...” Jasper started, then stopped, as if he were weighing his words carefully. “I know this has been hard on you. I know everything is a mess right now, but I need to ask you something.”

Her heart skipped a beat, and she braced herself for what he was about to say.

“Where do we stand?” Jasper’s voice was gentle, but there was an undercurrent of urgency in his question. “I’ve been by your side through all of this, and I care about you, Piper. More than I can even put into words. But with Gabriel... I need to know what you want.”

Piper felt her chest tighten. This was the conversation she had been dreading—the one that would force her to confront her feelings head-on. She had been trying to keep everything compartmentalized, to focus on the external threats, but now, standing in front of Jasper, she couldn’t avoid it any longer.

“I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t know what I want, Jasper. Everything is so confusing right now.”

Jasper’s jaw clenched, but he didn’t push her. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes searching hers. “I’m not asking you to decide right now. I know things are complicated. But I’m here, Piper. I’ve always been here. And I’ll keep being here, no matter what.”

The sincerity in his words tugged at her heart, and for a moment, Piper wondered if maybe things between them could go back to the way they were before—before the lies, before Gabriel, before everything fell apart. But the doubt lingered, clouding her thoughts.

“Thank you,” Piper whispered, unsure of what else to say.

Jasper nodded, though the tension between them remained. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”

Later that day, Piper found herself sitting in the park near her office, watching Lily play on the swings. The sound of her laughter was a small comfort, a brief escape from the chaos that had consumed their lives. But even as she watched her daughter, Piper couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that hung over her.

Noah was still out there, and while he had tried to make amends, the danger he posed hadn’t disappeared. His involvement with Marcus’s criminal network had put them all at risk, and Piper couldn’t trust that he wouldn’t make another desperate move.

Her phone buzzed, and she glanced down to see a text from Noah.

Noah: We need to talk. It’s important.

Piper’s heart raced. She hadn’t spoken to Noah since the attack, and part of her didn’t want to. But she knew she couldn’t avoid him forever. He was Lily’s father, and no matter how much she wanted to distance herself from him, he would always be part of their lives.

Me: Fine. Meet me tomorrow at the café.

As she sent the message, a sense of dread settled over her. She didn’t know what Noah wanted, but she had a feeling it wasn’t going to be good.

That evening, Piper returned to the hospital to check on Gabriel. He was awake, sitting up in bed with a slight grimace of pain as he adjusted his position. When he saw her, a faint smile touched his lips.

“Hey,” he said softly.

“Hey yourself,” Piper replied, taking a seat beside him. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I got hit by a truck,” Gabriel joked, though his eyes were heavy with exhaustion.

Piper smiled, though her heart ached at the sight of him so weak. “You scared me,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “I thought I was going to lose you.”

Gabriel reached out, taking her hand in his. “You won’t lose me, Piper. Not now, not ever.”

His words were filled with such certainty that for a moment, Piper allowed herself to believe them. But even as she sat there, holding his hand, the weight of her decision pressed down on her. She was torn between Gabriel and Jasper, both of whom had given so much to protect her. But there was no easy answer, no clear path forward.

As she looked at Gabriel, the man who had sacrificed everything for her, Piper knew that whatever choice she made would change everything.
