Bella couldn’t shake the image of Esmera, the woman who had been the architect of her suffering. Every time she closed her eyes, her mind was flooded with fragments of the memories—the cold, the darkness, the way Esmera’s presence had suffocated her, leaving her broken and transformed.
It was too much to handle all at once. The weight of it felt unbearable, like a shadow she couldn’t escape.
Later that day, as the sun began to set, Bella found Kael waiting for her in the clearing. His expression was dark, his eyes filled with a mixture of concern and barely-contained fury. The moment he saw her, his gaze softened, but the anger behind it was unmistakable.
“Kael…” Bella’s voice was soft, barely above a whisper, as she approached him.
“You remember her, don’t you?” Kael’s voice was rough, but there was an edge to it—a hardness that made Bella’s heart race. “Esmera. I’ve heard the name before. But now you’re sure. She did this to you, didn’t she?”
Bella nodded slowly, the weight of the truth sinking in. She could see the shift in Kael’s demeanor—the way his jaw clenched, his hands balled into fists. He looked like a man ready to tear the world apart to make Esmera pay for what she had done.
Kael stepped toward her, his eyes intense as he cupped her face in his hands. “I’ll find her, Bella. I swear it. I’ll make her pay for everything. For what she did to you. No one hurts my mate and gets away with it.”
Bella’s breath hitched at the word “mate.” The bond between them was still foreign to her, but the way he said it, the way he looked at her—it felt real, even if she couldn’t fully remember it.
“I want to stop her, too,” Bella whispered, her voice trembling. “But I don’t even know how to begin. And I don’t know what I am anymore, Kael.”
Kael’s hands gently held her shoulders, his eyes softening. “You’re still the woman I love. That hasn’t changed.”
Bella looked up at him, a flicker of something—familiar, comforting—passed between them. But just as quickly as it appeared, it faded into the confusion that had consumed her since she lost her memory.
Her hand instinctively reached for the silver necklace Kael had given her, but the feeling of unease surged once again. She didn’t remember it. Not fully. Not the way Kael did. She didn’t know how to trust these feelings—how to trust him—when everything inside her was so fractured.
She looked at him, eyes searching, trying to find the truth in his face. “Kael… I want to remember, but I’m scared. What if I’m too different?”
Before Kael could respond, a voice cut through the tension, low and deliberate. “You’re already different,” Zeryth said, emerging from the shadows of the trees. Bella hadn’t even sensed him approach. “And what you are now is more powerful than you realize.”
Kael turned on him immediately, his expression hardening. “What do you mean by that?” he demanded.
Zeryth’s eyes were filled with an ancient, unreadable knowledge. “I mean exactly what I say. Bella’s hybrid nature is both a blessing and a curse. Her power is growing every day, but so is the danger it brings.” He paused, his gaze turning toward Bella. “You don’t fully understand what you’ve become, Bella. But you will. The question is… can you control it?”
Bella’s heart pounded in her chest as she listened to Zeryth’s words. “What do you mean, ‘control it’?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Zeryth stepped closer, his tone grave. “Your hybrid power—it’s unlike anything the world has ever seen. It can make you stronger than anyone, more dangerous than anyone. But it can also consume you. And if you lose control…” He let the implication hang in the air, heavy and suffocating.
Kael’s eyes narrowed, frustration building. “Enough with the cryptic nonsense, Zeryth! What are you trying to say? Are you suggesting that Bella’s power will destroy her?”
Zeryth didn’t flinch at Kael’s tone. “I’m saying that her power is both her gift and her curse. Her wolf side makes her strong, but the vampire side makes her unpredictable. She’s a ticking time bomb, Kael. If she doesn’t learn to control it, it will destroy her—and everything around her.”
Bella’s breath caught as Zeryth’s words sank in. She had been so focused on trying to piece together the broken fragments of her past that she hadn’t truly stopped to consider the magnitude of what she had become. She had felt the power rising inside her, but had ignored it, pushed it aside in favor of regaining her memories.
But now it was clear. The power inside her wasn’t just a part of her—it was her. And if she couldn’t control it…
“What do I need to do?” Bella asked, her voice trembling.
Zeryth met her gaze, his expression somber. “You need to accept who you are, Bella. All of you. Only then can you begin to learn how to wield your power. If you’re going to survive, you need to embrace both the wolf and the vampire inside you.”
Kael stepped forward, his voice low and urgent. “We’ll figure this out together, Bella. We’ll find a way to make you whole again. I won’t let you face this alone.”
Bella’s heart twisted at his words. He was offering her everything—his loyalty, his protection. But how could she trust in something she didn’t even fully understand?
She looked at Zeryth, her eyes filled with confusion and determination. “What do you mean by that, Zeryth? What does embracing both sides of me mean?”
Zeryth met her gaze, his expression unreadable. “It means facing what you are, Bella. It means accepting your power, and learning to control it. But most importantly, it means facing the truth about yourself—and the consequences of what that power could mean.”
