Kael’s footsteps were heavy as he paced through the dense forest, his thoughts clouded by a mixture of fury and fear. Zeryth had taken Bella without his consent, and Kael could feel the weight of his jealousy gnawing at him. He had tried to be patient, tried to respect Bella’s need for space, but seeing her with Zeryth—he couldn’t stand it. His instincts as an alpha, as her mate, urged him to reclaim her, to make sure no one else got too close. But deep down, he knew the real reason for his anger wasn’t just Zeryth—it was the fear that Bella might never remember the connection they once had.
The thought of losing her completely haunted him.
“Where are you, Bella?” Kael muttered under his breath, his voice strained as he pushed through the underbrush. His eyes scanned the trees, desperate to find any sign of her. He had searched for hours, but the forest was vast, and Bella was no longer the woman he knew. She was lost in a sea of forgotten memories, and no matter how many times he tried to remind her of their bond, it was like trying to capture smoke with his bare hands.
He stopped for a moment, panting heavily, his hands on his hips. The landscape around him felt both familiar and foreign, the same woods where he had once held Bella close, their laughter echoing through the trees. He had promised to protect her, to help her regain everything that had been taken from her, but now… it felt like a promise slipping through his fingers.
Meanwhile, deep in the forest, Bella sat alone beneath an ancient oak tree, her back against the rough bark, her eyes distant. The air was cool, but she didn’t feel the chill. Her mind was consumed by the fragments of her past that had begun to resurface.
Images of Kael—his touch, his voice, his warmth—swirled in her mind. She remembered moments where she had felt safe, cherished. She could almost feel his presence beside her, the way his body had shielded hers, the way his gaze had once made her feel like the center of his world.
But now, it all felt so far away, like a dream that was slowly slipping from her grasp. Her chest ached with confusion, the tender memories mixing with doubt and fear. Was their bond real? Or was it something Kael had forced upon her, something she was supposed to feel but couldn’t quite grasp?
Did I love him? The question echoed in her mind, relentless and unyielding. She wanted to remember, to feel the love that was supposed to be there, but the uncertainty gnawed at her. The more she remembered, the more she questioned what was genuine and what had been manipulated.
Zeryth’s voice broke through her thoughts, a soft murmur of reassurance. “The truth will come when you’re ready for it. But only you can decide what’s real, Bella.”
Bella didn’t respond. She wasn’t sure she could anymore. Her mind felt like a battlefield, each memory fighting to hold its ground, each feeling an unfamiliar enemy. Every step she took to reclaim her past only seemed to distance her from the person she was meant to be.
Who was she now?
Tears welled in Bella’s eyes as the weight of it all pressed down on her. She had been so sure of herself once, so certain of her place in the world. But now, nothing made sense. The pain of her confusion was overwhelming, the constant battle between the fragments of her memories and her fractured identity tearing at her.
“I don’t know who I am anymore,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, as if speaking the words aloud would make them more real.
Zeryth watched her with a quiet sadness in his eyes, knowing that the road to recovery would be long and painful for Bella. But he also knew that there was strength in her, a power that would guide her back to herself, even if she couldn’t see it yet.
Back at the edge of the forest, Kael’s frustration reached its peak. He had searched for so long, and yet there was no sign of Bella. His heart thundered in his chest, and he couldn’t shake the image of her, alone and lost in her own mind.
A part of him wanted to charge forward, to demand answers from Zeryth, but he knew better. Bella wasn’t ready for that. She wasn’t ready for him.
With a growl of frustration, Kael turned and stormed in the direction he had last sensed her presence, his heart torn between the need to find her and the fear that when he did, she would be someone he didn’t recognize.
The sound of a crackling branch beneath his foot echoed through the forest, and Kael froze. There, standing at the edge of a clearing, was Bella. She was hunched over, her face hidden in her hands, her body trembling.
For a moment, Kael didn’t move. His chest tightened as he took in the sight of her—fragile, broken, and so far from the woman he had known. His heart ached as he stepped forward, slowly, cautiously, unsure of what to do or say.
But Bella’s head shot up at the sound of his footsteps, and her eyes widened in recognition—or perhaps in fear.
She opened her mouth to speak, but before she could, Kael’s voice broke through, raw and desperate. “Bella… Please. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
