After I caught Luna Alaia and Lisa conspiring against Zira, I knew I had to find a way to help. No more Miss Omega Mary anymore. Now I’m Miss Spy Omega Mary. Or maybe Miss Spy Mary? Or-Nevermind. It doesn't matter. I’m going to help Zira and that's a fact. Zira has always been nice to me. Talks to me about my books and asks about my day. She even taught me a few offensive moves during one of her training breaks. ‘Every pack member should know how to defend themselves,’ she would say to me.
I thought about going to Alpha Isaiah but seeing him with Alaia, I knew she had him wrapped around her witchy little finger. So I tried other ways to help, even tried convincing him to let me help Zira but Alaia intervened. Now she has me working all day, picking up Lisa’s duties now. What a…you know…that bad word. It’s fine though. I’ll show them.
You see I might just be a lowly Omega in their eyes but I discovered a special skill. I can tell when a witch uses magic. I noticed it the first time at the mating ceremony. For a moment, I thought it was just my intuition but soon realized it was the scent her spells give off. Alaia is our first witch so it makes sense I just now notice this.
Now that I think about it, that smell became more apparent over the past couple months. It wasn't until about a week ago, I caught a whiff of it and it was strong. That’s when I overheard Luna Alaia and Lisa talking about Zira. I couldn’t quite hear what they were saying but the smell of her power was thick in the air.
So I knew Alaia was up to no good when I was busy cleaning while Zira’s trial was going on and that scent hit me. It was alluring and I couldn't help but follow it all the way to Alaia’s office. I saw Victoria standing by the door and I could see a dark pink mist oozing around the edges of the door. I wondered if she could see it too but the way she was standing made it clear she couldn’t. When I saw her jump back from the door I hid around the corner. I could feel her fear and uneasiness to the point I was starting to get sick. I ran back to my duties to calm myself.
I wanted to be a hero and tell someone, so they could do something about it. However with me there was a thin line between ignorance and heroism, and I wasn't sure which one applied to me. The only thing I could do was look after Zira the best way I can, telling her not to trust Lisa with her food. So far it seems to be working. I haven’t encountered that scent for the past week until today.
I waited and watched Alaia leave her office in a hurry. The scent of whatever spell she casted wafted in the air. The moment she went downstairs, I walked over to the door with my supplies. If anyone comes I’m just an Omega doing my cleaning duties. It was locked but that wasn't an obstacle for me. I was a spy after all and one of their many talents was unlocking locked objects. Besides I’ve read enough books and had much practice from Lisa locking me in places for “fun”. So thank you Lisa. I sniffed around to see if I could find anything to show she was using magic. My nose led me to a drawer and when I opened it I saw a huge black book inside.
This must be it I thought as I examined the book. Next to it I saw a jade necklace that I knew belonged to Zira. This must be the way Alaia controls her. I heard laughter coming from outside so I hurried and pocketed the necklace. The book on the other hand would not fit in my pocket. I hesitated before touching it. I felt a sort of presence coming from it.
Before I could touch it I heard voices coming from the halls. I hurried and closed the drawer. I peeked out the door to see Alaia standing with Lisa. Oh snap! I’m caught. What to do? What to do? I slowly closed the door and looked around for a plan. What would Spy Mary do?
I looked around and noticed a vase on the windowsill. Great. I took out my cleaning supplies and spread them around the office. I threw some bleach on the floor in the bathroom and wet one of the towels in my hand. Right before the door opened I pushed the vase on the floor and fell to my knees, pretending to pick up the dirt.
Alaia was the first to open the door. “What the hell?”
I quickly looked up, playing the part of a frightened Omega. Well not really playing. She was terrifying especially with her little soldier on her heels.
“S…s…so sorry, Luna. I was cleaning and-”
She yanked me to my feet. “What are you doing in here,” she growled, making me shake even more.
“Cle…clean…cleaning. It's my job,” I croaked out.
“You don’t clean rooms that are locked, Omega. So why are you here and what is that smell?”
“It’s the bleach in the bathroom, Luna Alaia. I can hurry and clean it if you want.”
“How did you get in here when the door was locked,” she asked, gripping my arms hard enough to break my skin.
I whimpered a bit. “If it was locked I would’ve gone to the next room, Luna Alaia.”
I was hoping she would believe that because I was terrible at lying. True, as wolves we can tell if a person is lying but sometimes fear can mask that emotion and I had enough to last for a while. Luna Alaia held me in place for a minute. I’m guessing it's a scare tactic. She finally let me go and went to her desk. I started to go back to cleaning when she stopped me.
“You can leave, Omega Mary. Omega Lisa can finish this room.”
I nodded and packed up all my supplies. Before I could leave Luna Alaia stopped me again.
“You didn't happen to see a jade necklace in here?”
I looked at her with confusion on my face. “A jade necklace?”
I could tell she was getting irritated and finding me in her office threw her off guard.
“Yes the one Zira was wearing and…” She stopped, probably realizing what she just said.
“Why would Zira’s necklace be in here,” I asked, knowing she probably didn't want to answer it.
Before she answered there was a knock on the door. “Excuse me, Luna. I need to borrow Mary for a minute. Can I steal her?”
Luna Alaia looked at Victoria who had a soft smile on her face.
“Sure. After I’m done with her. Omega Mary, come here and empty your pockets.”
I handed my supplies to Victoria. I didn't know if I could trust her but she was all I had. She did come from the same pack as Alaia, so maybe there’s loyalty from that. She’s also mated to Isabella who loves Zira and they are friends. I caught her eyes and motioned towards my supplies with mine. Hopefully she gets it. I walked over to Luna Alaia and she had Lisa check all my pockets.
“There’s nothing here,” Lisa said.
“Then check her supplies,” Luna Alaia said in an irritating tone.
Victoria brought over my supplies and Lisa rummaged through them. I knew this time around I couldn’t escape this lie. She was going to find the necklace and probably have me executed for stealing.
“You’re nervous,” Luna Alaia said. “I wonder why when there's nothing to hide.”
Lisa should’ve found it by now and the fact that she didn’t gave me hope.
“You’re accusing me of stealing Luna Alaia. That would make anyone like me nervous.”
Luna Alaia just glared at me as Lisa looked at her shaking her head. “Fine you can go but next time, don’t come in here unless I ask you.”
I took my supplies from Lisa and headed out the door with Victoria. Instead of heading down the stairs, Victoria pulled me into Isabella’s room.
“Ok, tell me what you know and why I just pocketed a stolen necklace,” she asked the moment she closed the door.
“I…,” I started, wondering if I could trust her. I mean she did just help me out. “I’m just trying to protect Zira.”
“From Alaia,” Victoria said. I didn't respond. I didn’t know what to say. Victoria sighed. “Good. She needs all the help she can get. So I’m guessing this is hers.”
Victoria handed me Zira’s necklace. I was so excited to finally have someone on my side that I blurted out, “Alaia’s a witch.”
Victoria looked at me with a widened expression. I was a bit worried that I said too much until she spoke.
“I know, Mary. Relax. Wait, how did you find out?”
“Well aside from seeing her coming through a portal and I can sense when she does magic. Like I can smell the magic. I know that sounds crazy but-”
Victoria jumped at me and picked me into a hug. “You are exactly what we need.” She put me down. “Mary, whenever you sense her doing magic you have to let me know as soon as possible, ok?”
I was so frazzled by the hug all I could do was nod. I was excited. I know spies don’t typically team up but I can make an exception in this case.
“Ok, Mary. Tell me everything you know.”
I began telling her everything I heard and saw when I was around Alaia, not aware that a third party was listening in.
