“I’m telling you, Isaiah. She is not herself lately. We need to have her check,” Isabella ranted.
She’s been pacing back and forth, ranting about Zira’s behavior the past week. She’s been moodier than before and snapping at everyone apparently. I’ve been keeping my distance from since the day she burst into my office. It seems every time we meet now it turns into an argument or worse, so I’m trying to keep the peace until the baby is here. I’ve mostly focused my attention on Alaia.
She hasn’t been getting much sleep lately and whispering in her dreams. It’s nothing I could make sense of but one night when she was asleep I saw the drawings on her arms. They were faint but they looked like strange symbols. She was doing something and I wanted to find out what. Those symbols were not there on the night of our ceremony and yesterday they were completely gone. I needed to talk with Zack to see if he had a clue on what it is. I was really hoping it wasn’t magic.
“Isaiah, are you even listening,” Isabella yelled.
“I am. I am. Look, we're going to a check up later today…”
“Together or separate this time,” Isabella interrupted, crossing her arms.
True, I haven't been to visit with Zira since we came back but I’ve been busy. If it’s not Alaia and her jealousy along with our baby checkups, then it’s the Elders' constant checkups on the white wolf, or figuring out what to do with the rogues at Wormhole. Most of the time I just have Dr. Callie send me the updates but haven't had time to check on those either.
“Together,” I sneered at her. “I’ll ask Dr. Callie if there’s anything wrong, ok?”
Isabella threw her hands in the air. “You’re not listening. What if it’s not something physical but physiological? What if it's something we can't see? We need to confer with someone with powers, who can, I don't know, check her aura or something?”
“Look, Isa. I have way too much…”
“Don’t you even care about Zira at all?”
“Of course I do,” I yelled back at her, banging my fist into the desk.
For some reason I was really angry. Why would she even say that? Why does everyone think I don't care for Zira? I looked at Isabella, who stepped back and barred her neck in submission. I didn't mean to use my Alpha’s command but sometimes I can't control it.
“My apologies, Alpha.” I laughed a bit. Isabella only calls me that when she’s angry.
“I’m sorry, Isa. I didn't mean to…I just have a lot on my plate right now.”
Isabella sighed. “No, I'm sorry. I spoke out of turn. I don't know what you deal with on a day to day basis. So let me help, Isaiah?”
I sat back in my chair regarding my sister. I’m not sure what I could give to her to help out but I did appreciate the offer. Then an idea came to mind.
“Fine. Maybe we could do something for Zira. I heard the Lakes were off on their traditional family holiday and we agreed she stays put. So maybe…”
Isabella jumped out of the chair excitedly as if she was reading my mind. Of course she was reading my mind, we were twins like that. I could already see the wheels turning in her head.
“Okay, okay, okay, you don't need to say more,” Isabella stopped me, getting excited. “I’m sure I can do something with Victoria. Just keep her out of the house for a few hours, ok.”
Zira barely wants to be in the same room as me. I don't know how I’ll be able to keep her occupied any longer than an hour.
“Wait, Isa, a few hours? With Zi? I don’t know if I can…”
Isabella raised her hand. “Hey, hey, hey. You somehow got two girls pregnant within months of each other, so you must have a few tricks up your sleeves.”
She laughed, making me laugh with her.
“What do you have in mind,” I asked and she just smiled.
