Letting go

Chapter 23

Ch. 23 / 105 Feb 19, 2026

Christian

I open the door to find Molly thrashing about on her bed. She's wrapped in the bed sheets but sweating like fuck. "Molly," I call out to her but she doesn't respond. I walk further into her room and towards her bed while she goes between mumbling and calling out. She's clearly having a nightmare as she's calling out to Archie begging him not to leave her and begging him to wake up. She sounds heartbroken and it gives me a feeling that I dont like.

I may not like Molly but she's clearly having one awful dream and I can't just leave her like this. I wasn't raised to act like that, and I don't need to behave that way. No matter what I think or feel about her she's clearly in distress and I have to help her if I can.

"Molly." I call out to her louder but still nothing, I keep moving towards the bed until I'm standing right in front of her then I lean down until I'm pretty close to her body, "Molly, wake up." Still, nothing so I gently place my hand on her arm and slowly shake her, "Molly, you need to wake up."

I speak a little louder and she groans out in her sleep causing my cock to twitch, fuck! Now really isn't the time for this! I gently shake her again while I keep calling out to her when suddenly she bolts up straight in the bed and looks at me with wide eyes, her chest moves at a fast pace as she takes deep breaths while sweat runs down her face, neck, and chest.

"Molly, your ok just breath," I speak quietly and calmly to try and help her calm down, she's awake now so I shouldn't be here doing this but despite my mixed feelings about her, I can't leave her alone right now not in the mess that she is in.

"Christian?" She lifts her head until our eyes meet and it's clear that she's confused as to why I am here. Well, that makes the two of us!

"Yes it's Christian," She continues to take deep breaths as her eyes fill with tears and I fucking hate it. I'm supposed to hate this girl yet my next move says something completely fucking different, I sit down on the bed next to her and start to rub gentle soothing circles on her back as I whisper reassuring words to her.

Finally, her breathing starts to calm down but her tears only increase and are soon running down her face like a waterfall. As I continue to try and calm her down she leans her head on my shoulder completely worn out.

"Did I wake you up? Shit, I didn't wake the kids up did I?" She sounds panicky, and again I find myself soothing her. What the fucks is wrong with me?

"The kids are fine, you didn't wake anyone. I was on my way to bed and I heard you." She lifts her head up from my shoulder and gives me a shy embarrassed look.

"Good I'm glad I didn't wake anyone. I'm sorry that you had to come in here, Christian, you can head to bed now I'm fine," She's not, it's bullshit and we both know it.

"Stop worrying about others and just concentrate on your breathing." She gives me a nod then pulls her knees up to her chest and rests her head in her lap and still, I'm rubbing her back. "Do you get those nightmares often?"

She looks up at me with a confused look on her face and I'm pretty sure that she's wondering if I'm generally being nice or if I'm just doing this because I feel like I have to. I'd love to say that it's the latter but the truth is that I haven't got a fucking clue which one it is right now nor do I want to think about the reasons behind my behavior at this moment.

"Often enough..." It's clear to see that she is struggling to get her words out, so I decide to leave the questions for now and let her get herself together. I will find out what these dreams are about but it won't be tonight.

Molly

I'm being pulled from my sleep by a seriously loud sound, the more awake I become the louder the noise becomes. It's a blaring sound and slowly becoming annoying. What the hell is that?

As my senses start to wake a smell invades my nose and mouth, it's strong and makes me cough. I open my eyes but everything seems foggy and blurry so I rub my eyes to try and clear them some more but it doesn't make any difference I still can't see clearly.

I start coughing again and Suddenly everything falls into place, the fog isn't actually fog, It's smoke and that noise... It's the smoke alarm. Holy fuck my house is on fire!

I turn over to wake Archie but he's not in the bed. "ARCHIE!" I scream out but there's no answer. I get out of bed coughing again as I feel my throat burning. "ARCHIE!" Again there's no answer and I'm scared! I grab my jumper from the chair in the corner and hold it over my mouth while I make my way to the bathroom to see if he's in there but he's not. "ARCHIE WHERE ARE YOU?" I turn on the tap and soak my jumpers before rinsing it out and placing it back over my mouth and nose.

I open my bedroom door grateful that I can't see any fire yet, I get down on the floor onto my knees and use the sleeves of the jumper to tie the jumper around my head keeping it in place as I crawl to the bedroom next to mine where my best friend Tom is sleeping.

"TOM!" I scream out as I crawl towards his bed, I stand up and start shaking him and almost cry with relief when he stirs and jumps up in fright. "Tom the house is on fire!" It takes him a few moments to come around and realize what's happening before he jumps out of bed and I send him to his bathroom to get something to cover his mouth with. It won't stop him from coughing but it will help.

"Where's Archie?" He calls out and I feel my heart tug in a bad way.

"I don't know he's not in the bedroom, I'm hoping he's got out. Let's get downstairs and see if we can find him yeah?" Tom nods as we both get down low and start heading out of his room. I need to find Archie and I pray he's got out but I don't think he has, underneath I know that he wouldn't leave me or Tom in here and just run but right now I have to hope he did or the outcome will destroy me.

We make it to the top of the stairs but the smoke is getting thicker and the smell is becoming so strong that we can barely breathe and any breath we do have is being taken up by our coughing. My eyes are watering and I'm so scared it's causing my body to uncontrollably shake.

"I'll go first, follow me, Molly, I won't leave you I promise!" Tom shouts out and all I can do is nod my head agreeing with him as I follow him down the stairs and into the lounge.

"ARCHIE!" I scream out.

"ARCHIE!" Tom screams out next but still, I can't hear anything. Where is he? "Archie? Molly over here quick!" Tom calls out and I run over to him as quickly as I can but stop dead in my tracks when I see flames flickering from the couch almost reaching the ceiling and spreading across the floor and up the curtains.

I look down at the couch, and in that split second, I swear my heart stops beating momentarily. Laying across the cough is Archie he has a blanket across his legs and it's on fire! "No no no!" I scream out as I cough and splutter.

I go to grab the blanket but Tom pulls me back just before he stands in front of me and tries to pull the blanket off of Archie, he yells out as the flames lick his left hand and jumps back but the blanket doesn't move. I pull him back and then I step forward before he can stop me but he's quicker than me and wraps his arm around my waist and pulls me back. I go to shout at him but I can't speak, despite having my jumper over my mouth the smoke is becoming too strong for me and I'm slowing losing focus.

After a few seconds, I somehow manage to find my voice and call out Archie's name but he doesn't answer. I look around me and everyone's gone, there are no firefighters, no Tom but Archies is still on the couch. I try to run toward him but my feet won't move. "Archie please dont leave me!"

My feet are completely stuck to the ground; I can't move them no matter what I do. "Archie!" I call out but still, he doesn't move. I scream out for help but no one comes. "Archie wake up, please wake up!"

I keep calling out my voice getting higher and higher but it doesn't make any difference, no one coming to help us. "ARCHIE!"

I shoot up dripping in sweat and breathe so hard my heart is pounding against my ribs. I've had this very same dream more than once since the fire but it doesn't make sense. It's not what happened that night and I can't figure out why I keep dreaming it this way. I keep focusing on my breathing but momentarily freeze when I realize that someone's here with me. I look at him and I swear my mind must be playing tricks on me. it can't be him surely.

"Christian?"
