Cinderella of Our Time

Chapter 25

Ch. 25 / 59 Aug 22, 2024

(Day 48/122 of the experiment)

Dentist. My "favorite" doctor. Today is the day. My hands are shaking as if I am the one going to be digging in someone’s mouth and filling cavities. Horrible, who even decides to study dentistry? There’s this girl Kat sitting in the third grade saying, “I want to dig around in people's teeth! Awesome! It's the dream of my life! I will be a dentist.” Is that how it happens?

I know you should visit the dentist for check-ups twice a year. This way, you can prevent the spread of cavities and serious diseases. Besides, it's also cheaper. Because you plan to fill one or two cavities, instead of being a rare guest at the clinic and ending up with seven fillings in three visits.

So, my experience with dentists hasn’t been too successful. When I was a child, I wore a retainer to straighten my teeth, and that was a real ordeal. Sometimes my temperature would rise, my entire mouth hurt, and I mainly ate yogurts. The dentist was a 70-year-old grandpa who could hardly hear and, as it seemed to me, he could hardly see as well. Because every time I went to him, he would ask, “Is this your first time here, girl?”

Today, I am going for a scheduled check-up with a well-known doctor in the big city. I’m lucky that I’m scheduled for today—this is only thanks to Lilia and her connection with the clinic owner—because ordinary patients wait for months for an appointment. I hope the doctor turns out to be a pleasant man. I only know his name—Sasha.

I arrived five minutes before my appointment. I walked into the clinic. It’s quite a large building with what seems like six offices. They deal with prosthetics, braces, treatments, implants, and pediatric dentistry—basically everything related to teeth.

“Cinderella, meet your doctor, Oleksandra.”

In front of me stands a small, skinny girl in a white coat. She looks about 30 years old. Is this my doctor? Where is the charismatic man with a dazzling smile? Again, I don’t have luck with dentists. I must have that kind of karma.

After 40 minutes, I came out of the office feeling a strange mix of emotions—I was very happy that it was over and didn’t involve drills or injections, and the other prevailing emotion was delight. Delight at how white my teeth were and how this little girl Sasha turned my coffee drinker’s teeth into a true Hollywood smile in just 40 minutes.

During the ultrasonic teeth cleaning, I listened to a mini-lecture from the doctor about brushing teeth. It turns out that the familiar “up and down” movements with the brush are incorrect—this only injures the gums and doesn’t clean anything. You should make circular movements from the gums upward. This way, all the microbes and bacteria will be neutralized.

I wrote a huge post on Instagram about my new acquaintance with doctor Sasha and the absurdity of the situation when you expect a nice (preferably unmarried) male dentist, and a tiny, very young female doctor walks out to you.

(Day 49/122 of the experiment)

Despite the terrible muscle soreness, I sprinted to the gym first thing in the morning, and from there went to stretching. I would like to say that my iron will was the reason for this, but the truth is different – today I'm going for lip correction and for the next few days I can forget about any sports, except for walks.

When I arrived at the cosmetologist, I could barely muster the strength to speak – I was so exhausted from the workouts. Natalia Vyacheslavovna surprised me by saying that my lips had healed quickly and my body had responded well to the hyaluronic acid. And the remaining product could be added where I felt I wanted a bit more volume. I was very pleased with the doctor's words because I really wanted to make the "dimple" on my upper lip more pronounced. Naturally, my lips resemble a pancake flattened under my nose, so volume can be added and added.

After the not-so-pleasant procedure was finished, I saw the perfect result! Natural, organic, not too protruding and not looking like duck lips, my lips became what they should have been by nature, had it not shortchanged me.

In the evening, an urgent council was called on the topic “What to buy while shopping in New York?” Sveta decided to treat herself to a mini-vacation and headed to the capital for three days, where she went shopping. But without her friends' help, she couldn't choose winter boots. So thanks to the internet, her loyal stylist-amateurs Liliya and Cinderella provided thorough comments. The council continued with coffee and tea – I brewed chamomile for myself, Liliya enjoyed her favorite Americano with milk at a café next to her office, and Susan took a break in the food court while sipping matcha latte in one of the shopping malls.

By the way, it was at this council that Liliya and I agreed on a meeting tomorrow regarding my new wardrobe.
