Bound By Blood

Chapter 67

Ch. 67 / 100 Jun 22, 2025

The night before the duel was heavy with an air of inevitability, the kind that made every breath feel like a weight. Blackthorn Manor seemed to hold its breath, the flickering torches casting restless shadows against the ancient walls. The bond between Ella and the brothers pulsed erratically, a discordant hum that echoed their shared anxiety and dread.

Ella sat by the window in her room, gazing out at the moonlit grounds. The stars seemed too distant, their light cold and indifferent. She clutched the music box containing Eloise’s letter in her lap, its words a constant echo in her mind. The heir is not gone. The bloodline persists.

A soft knock at her door broke the silence, and Ella turned to see Adrian standing there. His icy-blue eyes were shadowed, his usual commanding presence muted by something raw and vulnerable.

“May I?” he asked, his voice quieter than usual.

Ella nodded, motioning for him to enter. Adrian closed the door behind him and crossed the room, standing stiffly for a moment before sinking into the chair opposite her.

“I couldn’t sleep,” he admitted, running a hand through his dark hair. “Too much on my mind.”

Ella studied him, noting the tension in his jaw and the faint tremor in his hands. “What is it, Adrian?” she asked gently.

He hesitated, his gaze dropping to the floor. “I’ve spent centuries carrying this family,” he began, his voice low. “Every decision I’ve made, every sacrifice—it’s all been for them. For us. And now… now I feel it slipping through my fingers.”

“You’re scared,” Ella said softly, the bond pulsing faintly with his fear.

Adrian’s eyes snapped to hers, his vulnerability stark against his usual stoicism. “Yes,” he admitted. “I’m terrified. Not of losing to Elias, but of losing you. Of losing all of you.” His voice cracked, and he looked away, his fists clenching. “I can’t fail again, Ella. Not this time.”

Ella reached out, placing a hand over his. “You’re not alone in this, Adrian. We’ll face it together.”

The bond surged gently, a fleeting warmth that soothed the jagged edges of his emotions. Adrian leaned forward, pressing his forehead to hers. “Promise me,” he murmured. “Promise you’ll stay.”

“I promise,” Ella whispered, her chest tightening at the weight of his plea.

Later, as the manor settled into an uneasy stillness, there was another knock at Ella’s door. This time, it was Vincent. He stepped inside without waiting for an invitation, his dark eyes scanning her face with quiet intensity.

“You shouldn’t be alone tonight,” he said, his voice low but firm.

Ella gave him a faint smile. “I’m not alone. Not really.”

Vincent stepped closer, his presence steady and grounding. “I mean it, Ella. Elias is unpredictable, and his hold on this manor is growing. I won’t let him harm you.”

The bond pulsed with Vincent’s protectiveness, wrapping around Ella like a shield. She reached out, brushing her fingers against his. “You’ve always been there for me,” she said softly. “I don’t think I’ve ever thanked you for that.”

“You don’t need to thank me,” Vincent replied, his voice tinged with emotion. “Protecting you—it’s not just my duty. It’s what I want to do. Always.”

Ella felt her heart ache at his words, the bond thrumming with a deep, unspoken connection. Vincent leaned down, his forehead resting against hers. “I will keep you safe,” he vowed, his voice barely above a whisper.

As midnight crept closer, Sebastian was the next to find her. He slipped into her room like a shadow, his usual charm muted by the tension in the air.

“Couldn’t sleep either?” Ella asked, giving him a tired smile.

Sebastian chuckled softly, but it lacked his usual mirth. “Sleep? In this house? Not a chance.” He leaned against the wall, his golden eyes glinting in the dim light. “But I did find something. Something important.”

Ella sat up straighter. “What is it?”

Sebastian hesitated, his usual confidence wavering. “Elias… he’s not just after the manor or the family name. He’s after the bond. He’s been using blood magic to manipulate it, to draw power from it.”

Ella’s stomach twisted, the bond flaring faintly with Sebastian’s unease. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

“I wasn’t sure,” Sebastian admitted, running a hand through his tousled hair. “But tonight, I overheard him speaking to one of his men. He’s planning to use the bond as a weapon—to break us apart and take control.”

Ella’s blood ran cold. “We need to stop him.”

Sebastian stepped closer, his hand brushing against hers. “We will. But promise me, Ella—don’t let him get inside your head. You’re stronger than him.”

The bond pulsed again, carrying Sebastian’s sincerity and a flicker of something deeper. Ella nodded, her resolve hardening.

As the night deepened, the manor seemed to grow darker, the shadows lengthening and the air growing colder. Ella wandered to the library, seeking solace among the ancient books. But she wasn’t alone.

Elias was waiting for her, his silhouette framed by the faint glow of the moonlight filtering through the windows. He turned as she entered, his expression a mask of calm confidence.

“Ella,” he said smoothly, his voice like silk. “What a pleasant surprise.”

Ella stopped in her tracks, her heart racing. “What are you doing here?”

Elias smiled, his gaze piercing. “I came to see you, of course. The night before a duel always brings clarity, don’t you think?”

He stepped closer, his movements slow and deliberate. “I want you to know, Ella, that no matter what happens tomorrow, you have a choice. You don’t have to be bound to them—to their rules, their fears. With me, you could be free.”

Ella clenched her fists, the bond trembling with a mix of fear and defiance. “You don’t understand,” she said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her. “I choose them.”

Elias’s smile faltered, his eyes narrowing. “Then you choose weakness,” he said coldly. “And weakness always breaks.”

Before Ella could respond, Elias turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving her standing alone in the library.
